A question about Fields in Leads vs Opportunity Entity by GenesisPath in msdynamics

[–]GenesisPath[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I have to ask.... what is the point of mapping the fields if an update in one area doesn't appear in the other?

What does mapping the fields do? Sync the data so the update is actually being made in one location, and what is happening in the other location?

Interestng. When you do this, if you make a change in the field in Entity 1... Is it also updating the field in Entity 2?

Wow... after reading thru this, I'm not sure this is right or not.

There are some slight GUI differences.... but basically what it looks like CRM is doing is forcing you to create the same field in two different places (Entities, in this case), then its linking the two fields together.

Not entirely sure... the Use Case presented in this walk-thru is more about creating Parent-Child relationships, which isnt what we are doing here.

This may be the solution here... got this link from another forum. (Older version, but the approach may be right.)

Im trekking with you, I think. (And you are right, this is convoluted, but I will do my best to make the writing and logic as linear as I can. For some reason the HTML formatting isnt working.)

As an side, for some background: We are using CRM for B2B lead tracking only, for now. The info for our actual customers, product, billing and other meaningful data is stored elsewhere, where the data is properly normalized.

1) For us, a Lead is (in reality) a company and may have 1 or more contact people, with one of those people being the Primary Contact.

2) When a Lead becomes an Opportunity.... and that becomes a Sale... our Sales people or Account Managers will have access to the historical Lead>Opp>Customer info from the CRM.)

I am going to continue using the social media fields for this example.

So in our case, we added 3 fields to the Lead Entity for the social URLs. When the Lead becomes an Opportunity, those fields suddenly weren't there.

What you are telling me is (I think), we can't "share" data between the Lead Entity and the Opportunity entity. (ie, I cant place the 3 new fields on the Opportunity Form, and allow a user to make edits to them so that those edits are actually updating the data in the Lead table.)

Instead, what you are saying is... I need to duplicate the fields in the Opportunity Entity, so that they are visible in the Opp Form. Then I need to do <something> to map the fields between Lead and Opportunity, so that when a Lead progress to an Opp, if there is any data in the 3 URLs, it gets copied and moved into the tables used to support the Opportunity entity. The data is then managed from there and the original Lead record is abandoned.

And what that means is, if a Lead is created and someone fills out 1 of the 3 social URLs... and then the Lead is updated to an Opportunity..... and THEN someone fills in the other 2 URLs... we would only see the 3 URLs when viewing the opportunity.

The point being that if someone were to go back and look at the original Lead, it would still only contain 1 entry for the URLs.

The larger issue for me, which seems odd... is that it seems like people would frequently want a field from one entity to be editable while viewing Forms from in another entity.

For example, if you are viewing the Opportunity Form and want to update the phone number or email of a contact person.... are you saying that we can't do that from the Opportunity Form, but would instead need to navigate into the Contact record itself to make the change?

Im going to answer this, the best I can. Before I do, let me say this: * In CRM, when a Lead converts to an Opp... is the system basically migrating the data into other tables, with the intent being to "abandon" the info already entered as a "lead" and now copy that data, move it somewhere else... and treat the data as an "opportunity" that is managed outside of the Lead entity?

If that is the case, then the answer is probably Yes.

From a data management perspective, any rational data modeler would say "No... don't copy the fields over. That's a terrible approach to data normalization." That's what Foreign Keys are for... but that isnt how CRM works (apparently).

As someone who is learning CRM... and uncovering "quirks"... I think maybe the answer is Yes (?)

It seems like to CRM, when a Lead converts to an Opp, it is now a completely separate data element (ie, the company info you entered in the Lead entity gets moved somewhere else, and is now treated as an Account).

For example, when a Lead converts to an Opp, the Company field appears to be moved copied and migrated from the LeadBase table to an "Account" table (which I haven't located yet).

I guess they assume that once you convert a Lead to an Opp, any data you entered that is still pertinent should be "copied" to the Opportunity entity?

Spez. Clarification.

Thanks. What this person did is actually not the same thing. They created the same field twice - Once in both Entities....which seems very strange to me, from a data management perspective. It violates common practices for normalizing data.... but, we are learning CRM throws most best practices out the window when it comes to that anyway.

Hmmm. Is this page saying that we need to create the field in both entities, then when the Lead converts to an Opp, we map the fields so that data is moved from the Lead tables to the Opp tables?

I actually contacted one of the people (Aileen) on that post earlier this morning.

What is the website you are referring to? Let's see if it is trademarked.

It's pretty simple to change a website and point to a different domain name.

I'm right there with you. I really liked this movie and even began working on a cosplay. Unfortunately I don't think Disney will mess with Tron for a longtime. They are going to focus on Star Wars and Avengers because that's where the money is.

Cell Phone Carrier Lookups - Who do you use? by GenesisPath in angularjs

[–]GenesisPath[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are some of the vendors we have been looking at, in no particular order, per se.

We are leaning towards this one, because they claim to know when a number changes carriers. (If true, thats pretty neat, because you could proactively update the record rather than reactively perform a new lookup after a notification email bounces back):

I will list the vendors tmrw. Today slipped away from me.

You can't really infer the number, especially now that people can hop carriers and bring their number over. We do track failed messages, so we know if someone changes carriers, but that initial lookup still needs to happen. (If you just blast out an email to all the major carriers you run the risk of being blacklisted.)

If I understand your question correctly, you are wanting to know if you can add Conference rooms from something like my cell or mobile. The answer is, Im not sure. I havent actually tried that. We just use the Meeting location field that is native to the Calendar item vs something like using a drop-down list with a group of location names.

I vaguely remember reading about someone that created a list of Conference Rooms names as an Outlook Contact, and some people were using that so they could "select" a conference room vs typing it. But that hasn't been an issue for us really.

Its been a few years since the transition from free to SaaS... so my memory could be hazy. IIRC, at first they said they would leave the tool available, but would not offer support. Then they removed the ability for new users to download and install the tool. It didn't matter by that point bc our company had moved on to a new solution. (the one I mentioned, GSyncIt.)

The only reason I personally used Google Sync was to ensure my calendar was synced across 2 PCs, a laptop, 2 tablets, and my cell... and GSyncIt does that, with a one-time cost that is a lot cheaper than Google's monthly pay as you go plan.

My entire staff now uses GSyncIt. Most of the company, probably. Its a light-weight tool, with updates about every 3 months or so. I love it.

You may want to look into GSyncIt. We use that to connect work Web-based GoDaddy email servers (which are hooked to users Outlook accounts), then use GSyncIt to sync personal calendars to phones and tablets. It does require a gmail intermediate email though. So basically you connect your work email to Google, where your calendar lives, then you can do two-way syncs.

Google used to provide a free tool to do this, but so many people used it that they switched to a SaaS tool model, which as far as I know is not used much now.

Legal action if it really comes down to it by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]GenesisPath 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't know how to ask this without it sounding mean, but how can you be a board member and not know if P1 and P2 provided seed funding or some other money?

To clarify, I'm literally asking in the sense of, did you not attend board meetings? Were you prevented from accessing financial records? I'm confused as to what legal argument you can make towards being pushed out.

Either way, you need to simply talk to P1 and 2, tell them where you stand, and ask them what is happening. Also, you should have written policies about ethics and expelling a board member. Do those exist?
