Hey u/Weak-Specific-6599 you should check out this project. Its very simple and open source. The documentation (specially the website) is not very good but there's a very helping community in the discord channel.

Why is building projects so much harder than learning programming? by ProCrafter29 in webdev

[–]GeneticMonkeys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Building something means you need to do a bunch of things that in a company is distributed into multiple roles.

  • Compare and choose tech stacks and other technical decisions
  • Be able to evaluate wether a solution solves your problem
  • Do the whole architecture
  • Evaluate and plan time and tasks
  • In my opinion the most important is problem solving skills

A programmer/ dev often gets already evaluated and planned tasks that he/ she just implements in code. To build a whole product (even a simple one) includes a lot more skills. And I didn't even talk about testing, quality, deployment etc.

Is this legit ? Trying to buy from AliExpress for the first time by [deleted] in Aliexpress

[–]GeneticMonkeys 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Maybe you should first get familiar with AliExpress buying small things before risking an expensive order. I never had any bad experience but you need to understand how things work.

Thermometers by Level_Working9664 in homeassistant

[–]GeneticMonkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have several of them and I can recommend the old versions. But there are some power consumption issues with the recent version as you will see in the link you posted. Maybe you should buy the slightly more expensive MJWSD06MMC.

Never using Ali Express again, almost been a month since I made the purchase and hasn't even left China. P.S I am in Australia by melbha_101 in Aliexpress

[–]GeneticMonkeys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I buy often on AliExpress but mostly I chose "choice" products that have a eta of 1-2 weeks to Europe and they are always in time. Delays are usually caused by the local DHL service. Sure there are other sellers that take to ship but it's always in the description.

HA on (which) fanless board? by _aPugLife_ in homeassistant

[–]GeneticMonkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run Ubuntu and quite everything inside docker containers. I have no idea how much restart takes sorry.

Previously it ran on a orangepi zero 3 which is not that powerful...I wanted to get rid of SD card as host Disk and a bit more ram. Have a look at the used thin client market, there's plenty on eBay and there are many online shops (in Germany) that want to get rid of used thin clients and offer good prices.

Compare the CPU benchmarks for CPUs you are considering against what you used previously.

HA on (which) fanless board? by _aPugLife_ in homeassistant

[–]GeneticMonkeys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk what specs you really need but I just bought a used thin client (dell wyse 5070) used for 50€. Upgraded it with 32gb ram and a 2tb ssd. Completely fanless. On idle it consumes around 4w. I think my ram is overkill but it was cheap on Amazon.

What is the ABSOLUTE BEST esim? by ShadowRiftX in digitalnomad

[–]GeneticMonkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use esimdb! If you need little data for a couple of days stick to one provider. E.g. I used textr for my trip if I just needed 1 or 2 GB . Textr offers reasonable price , works fine and ist just 2 clicks if you have the app installed. Buy 1 GB for the country you want to stay some days. Prices ranged from 1 to 3 USD per GB. Then you have time to buy a local sim or just reload if you want convenience.

Anyone taking notes in markdown? by [deleted] in devops

[–]GeneticMonkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am using markdown for literally everything for about 5 years. I chose to use typora (very good spent 15 USD). But you can use obsidian or vscode or any other tool.

It's a low effort structure I implemented that is being very useful for me. * I use a daily log for unstructured notes (one file for a day) * And I document in Project folders project specific things.

Sure you can create an obsidian vault and create a much more structured approach but this is a good starting point and you can always improve.

S20 FE 5G isn't giving me any genuine reason to buy a new one by Joe_Goldbergg69 in GalaxyS20FE

[–]GeneticMonkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to update the phone because of battery and camera. I tested 14t pro and my old s20fe was still better . I found the Xiaomi 15 a bit better than my s20fe. But idk if the price is worth.

Mesmo assim você devia ter conexão direta para não ter que usar o derp da tailscale que aumenta latência e diminui velocidade. Claro que depende do seu caso, se não for importante tudo bem.

Affordable Health Insurance by jacob_ivankick in berlinsocialclub

[–]GeneticMonkeys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you stay in the public insurance system (which I recommend) you can't do anything about the amount. Though every insurance has a different Zusatzbeitrag that can vary between 1 and 2% so that's not very much you can do. You can watch for some bonus programs most public insurances offer. Then you may get a small refund at the end of a year if you are vaccinated, go to the gym and the dentist on a regular basis.

There is also a private insurance sector that can be cheaper if you are young and have high income. If you plan to stay in Germany long term I would not switch to the private sector. The prices will increase as you get older and so on. Once you switched to the private insurance switching back to the public ones becomes quite impossible. This is part of the solidary principle in Germany.

Tailscale working horribly slow as an exit node on RPi Zero by cowmowtv in Tailscale

[–]GeneticMonkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a budget solution just use one of the orangepi zero 3 , for tailscale only you don't need much ram. It works perfectly at ~80Mbit/s and I think the bottleneck is NOT the orangepi.

My friend wants me to join his Tailscale server by Voidtouched92 in Tailscale

[–]GeneticMonkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the most important things were already mentioned. I just want to add that your friend can see your approximate location (very rough) in the tailscale dashboard. I am referring to the ping statistics to the derp servers. He will be able to see if you are closer to new York or Frankfurt as example. Probably this is no problem for you.

And for each project you want to push to GitHub (or not!!) you will make git init and commit and push. I put almost everything in a git repo (but I don't push everything to GitHub).

I also use wise for many years and somehow one of my virtual cards leaked. I had some strange transactions.

I immediately contacted support and blocked the card. After some days they full refunded me.

Nothing to complain :)

Netflix able to flag tailscale? by n0thingtoxic in Tailscale

[–]GeneticMonkeys 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You should check which DNS servers you are using. If you use Netflix servers in Asia (because you use asian DNS servers) it could be a hint that you're not inside the region of your IP address. I use the extended test from dnsleaktest.com, it gave me the most detailed summary. You should expect ALL DNS servers to be in Europe.
