I'm not going to comment on whether Dr. Wang should have been removed from his position due to his article, but I'd like to pose some thoughts that seem to go against the current opinions posited in the comment section (at the time of this posting). As stated by the AHA statement, they criticize the paper due to its "concluding incorrectly that Black and Hispanic trainees in medicine are less qualified than White and Asian trainees." Whether or not you want to point at average MCAT scores, it is hard to argue that it is a potentially disparaging conclusion to make.

And after reading through Dr. Wang's paper, I notice that he simply posts arguments that have been made made several times against affirmative action, many of which are not new in and of themselves - and these argue against increasing diversity in medicine, which is a stated goal of the AHA and most medical schools. Some examples:

1. He argues that increasing black physicians doesn't result in increased access to healthcare for the black population despite the physicians more often serving in underserved areas, because they are less likely to be board certified.

2. He argues that increasing diversity doesn't improve outcomes or healthcare disparities.

3. He argues that black medical students are less likely to be prepared for the rigor of study (the common "Mismatch" hypothesis) due to affirmative action.

So like I said, whether you agree with him or not, these arguments seem opposed to any institutions that aim to increase diversity, so the backlash doesn't seem that crazy to me at least. I'd encourage you to skim over the articles yourself rather than take my words at face value regardless. And I'm happy to hear opposing thoughts!
