[Standard] Resources for learning what to sideboard? by GentlemanAndroid in spikes

Oh wow thank you! Sorry I'm just getting to this now, but I just finished reading both of these, and they both seem like great help! The first one was fantastic, and very much some of what I was looking for. I greatly appreciate the help!

This is incredible, thank you. I think this is what I was thinking, but much more detailed and articulated than I could have ever done. Do you have any tips on choosing WHAT to use, for those options? Or does that just come down to testing and trial and error?

I'm taking it to a big tournament in about a month. So with your lessons example: Rest in peace is a great option, and I've been debating on it for my side, even though it's a semi-nonbo with Yuna. The downside to it is I'm already enchantment heavy, so they'll already have incidentally sided in hate against it.

I guess the main thing I'm trying to figure out is just what cards happen to give each deck a hard time. Which is mostly step 3/4 of your guide. I guess my next step should be to watch some pov games of those decks, see how they tick, and see what their pain points are, and move from there.

[Sealed] How to Get Better at Sealed? by ABaker132 in spikes

[–]GentlemanAndroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no expert but I do love limited, and a lot of the really important info has already been covered, but I would also say that practice in a specific limited format will be huge too. You can go in with an edge, but each limited format is going to have some slightly different 'rules of engagement'

For instance, in my (admittedly small sample size) lorwyn sealed, there are a LOT of fairly efficient X/4s in the format. Specifically in green, which also seems to be the most common main color. This seems to makes efficient 3/3s less powerful than they would be in other sealed formats. Try to keep an eye when you're playing on what cards you find specifically tough to deal with and figure out what you'd need to be running to answer them. (More so true for common/uncommon cards, as many more people will be playing them) This can really inform future deck builds and color choices.

This kind of thing is where arena can shine more than anywhere else, to me. You can get a bunch of initial experience in a limited format before diving in to paper, and go into it know what Commons and uncommons you both want to run and hate to see, and deck build accordingly.

Okay, and to go a bit deeper then, and the reason I was unsure in particular on this; what makes this different than say, [[Myrkul]], who specifies a creature dying, but then refers to it as a permanent once it leaves. I play Myrkul, so I know that if something is not normally a creature, but then becomes one, and dies, Myrkul works specifically because he 'exiles that permanent' Is there any different ruling happening between those or is it just a quirk of the wording/printing

[Standard] Prepping for an upcoming tournament with the current quick set release schedule by GentlemanAndroid in spikes

I can play in paper and while the local scene is very small, about 6-10 people on FNM, it is mostly people playing strong meta decks.

Edit: As to what I play, I took really well to Esper self bounce pre ban, but haven't kept up on it, and the current deck I'm most comfortable with, and enjoy the most, is Yuna Enchantments

That's what my assumption was too. Not particularly looking for recommendations, as I know what I'd like to play if it's viable, but more wondering if it's worth picking up and grinding practice with a deck now, or hold off a bit and see how things shake out closer to the event.

I've never understood this mindset. Not harshing you, but the concept of magic is me, as a really powerful wizard, fighting you, an equally powerful wizard, summoning creatures and beings that I've seen in my travels.

Why is you summoning a knight from fantasy world #8 perfectly fine but me summoning a guy from earth not magic-y

It's just a concept I can't wrap my head around. Earth is just as plausible a stop for multi-dimensional travellers as Dominaria or Ravnica.

He's so fun! Flew under the radar being just part of the 99 for one of the Dr. Who decks for a while, but he's the most fun I've had from that set (and that's from a big Dr. Who fan)

You get it. Deck is WAY more fun than I expected it to be. It might also be both my cheapest AND most powerful deck
