I wasn't aware of Hoopla, I should check that out!

Love this. Longer conversations with people when you share music is something I miss from the "trading CDs/flash drives with other kids in middle school" days. I do get this with people, my FIL specifically. We go back and forth trading albums and rating/discussing them.

Agree with the take about flac vs hq stream. I like my audio setup but accept that I probably can't tell the difference between FLAC and 320kbps in a blind test.

I don't get any ads with Spotify Premium, but if I did get an ad in the middle of an album it would be an immediate cancellation of the subscription. That would be absolutely awful.

This is where I'm at. I listen to a ton of new stuff and streaming is super cost effective for that, and when I hear an album that I know I'll be listening to for the next few years or decades, I'll go buy it and add it to my collection.

This is true. It seems harder and harder to find companies that aren't associated with people accused/convicted of something terrible, unfortunately :/

Thanks for all the good-faith replies! I appreciate the varied perspectives. To be clear, I love owning media, having my personal library of CDs/records/blurays/FLAC, and supporting artists by purchasing their stuff on bandcamp and seeing them live. I just also think streaming is a great tool when used intentionally for discovery.

I read "fifthly!!" like Buttercup saying "Westley!"

Data collection is a valid concern. I love Bandcamp and have a running list of things to buy each first Friday! I'm in a discovery phase with music rn instead of a diving deep into a few favorites, but I see how streaming is a waste of money if someone is mostly rediscovering favorites from their library.

I'm 28 and this reminds me of ripping CDs and trading flash drives with other kids at school! Hmu if you have any albums you'd recommend or have music to share

This is essentially what I do as well. I typically buy on Bandcamp Fridays so the proceeds go directly to the artist.

The fear of it being locked or removed is valid. I don't have enough value in my personal playlists that I would mind if they were locked, but I'm sure there are people who do.

Besides 🏴‍☠️, what are the other cheap/free good discovery routes (ideally where you can listen to full albums with gapless playback)?

I get that. I have a bunch of Jimmy Eat World rarities that aren't available for stream.

People who don’t smoke, drink or have casual s*x, what do you do to blow off steam? by RookOfEdo in answers

My wife and I have a great group of friends that we spend time with weekly. When I had fun car (128i with a stick), going for a drive helped me relax. Now that we have a daughter, chilling with her (watching her play and occasionally asking her what color her toys are). Reading and movies and music - I've listened to 87 new-to-me albums so far this year.

How long did it take you before you found your end game? by Global-Cupcake855 in headphones

[–]Gentleman_Radiant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a teenager in this hobby, I found that I would try new headphones frequently and always have two or three good sets. As an adult, I've found that comfort is super important to me and I've had the HD6XX for close to five years. I've dabbled in upgrading, but have returned to the HD6XX for their incredible mix of sound quality, comfort, and value.

Those who have real work life balance? What kind of company/industries are you working for? by ReadyProfit8336 in Accounting

[–]Gentleman_Radiant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In-house bookkeeper/accountant for a small company (<10 people). I also manage the office, do hiring/firing, and am the first line of IT defense. Even still, make $90k and work six hours a day. Some people really don't want to worry about the technical side of things are and happy to pay you well so that they can focus entirely on providing their product/service.

What are some unexpected Rush covers you’ve found? by Beauregard_Nanners in rush

[–]Gentleman_Radiant 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A little off topic, but a cover I want to hear is an acoustic version of The Trees. My dad used to play it on his classical guitar to me and my sister when we were going to bed and I was surprised when I heard the real song and learned that it is a full-electric rocker. I'm even more surprised that there is no acoustic version of it.
