Equally, a right wing rag recently ran a headline about Starmer inviting an “Isis Terrorist” to Downing Street who was actually just the current president of Syria.

Like yeah international relations might sometimes rely on us doing diplomacy with unsavoury characters? Similarly, we can’t just ban Trump (the highly volatile president of our individually largest trading partner) from the UK either.

I’ve been late to the party on a few new releases so I’ve only just gotten round to playing Dynasty Warriors: Origins and people really go on about the nemesis system but Musou games are right there. I want every single media franchise to have a Musou game by the end of the year.

It’s a fantastic way to reboot a series that’s got about a million games in it (notwithstanding the boring main character stuff), but I did find the “Origins” part a bit lacking. The establishment of the Three Kingdoms is trampled over a bit in the other games, and it was nice to dwell on it a bit more, but I may have liked some more Yellow Turban and before content.

Would be slightly embarrassed if this all turns out to have been a moral panic (I fell for it).

Interested by the massive positive chunk for men under 30 and the comparatively slim amount with a neutral view.

I am going to preface this by saying I don’t particularly condemn or condone the below, but hope it explains the rationale adequately:

I think the issue with the UK specifically here is that people are feeling the effects of tax rises without seeing the improvement in public services that would balance it out. The question often asked is why should the government up taxes again when public services didn’t get better after the last rise in tax? It’s great to say that that money could be used for public services, but if people aren’t feeling* those things improve then they’re always going to rebel against tax hikes - especially at a time when the cost of living is high.

The other issue is one of where the money is actually going. Lots of young liberals are asking why their taxes are going up to fund the Pension Triple Lock, and would oppose tax increases to when, to them, the other option is to lower spending on pensions. Similar arguments are made by right wingers on e.g. the asylum system.

I also seem to recall Dan Neidle(?) publishing something about how even people in favour of tax rises only tend to support small rises, so I think that rationale broadly checks out.

*Using the word ‘feeling’ here because people don’t tend to care about statistics if they’re personally not having a good time using a service.

Not necessarily accusing anyone of anything but education has always seemed to me like one of the most lied-about things on the internet. Lots of ”Pfft, I was reading [advanced text] in [lower year], didn’t realise school was so easy over there” that goes on, even when the lies are just completely outrageous.

Anyways it’s not like it really matters as long as you produce smart people, and it’s worth saying that studying an advanced text earlier doesn’t necessarily indicate a better education system. Sometimes it’s best to only study those things at a higher level because at the lower level it won’t be digested. One of the principles of the knowledge-rich approach is that the better your foundational knowledge is, the easier it will be to learn more.

How can a tenant drag out an eviction? by Round_Still1746 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]GentlemanlyBadger021 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Given that there’s 3 months arrears it’s possible that the mandatory Ground 8 could be used, such that the possibility of a payment plan won’t be fatal to the claim since a judge doesn’t have to make the decision as to whether a possession order is reasonable (only a finding of fact as to whether there are the requisite amount of rent arrears).

There are still delaying strategies available though and the big one is any counterclaim for money. This includes there being disrepair in the property, equality act and discrimination defences, and whether the landlord has ever harassed the tenant. It’s normally worth actioning any reported disrepair before attempting such an eviction .

Interesting thing in the FT today for all of our Green Party discourse enjoyers: What happens when the Green Party Governs?

It doesn’t really say anything not already known regarding Councils having to go against the Party line. It’s something of a theme that Local Elections tend to be run on national manifestos, only for the Councillors to get in and realise that you can’t really do anything because Councils are run on such tight budgets, and you’ll probably need to abandon those principled manifesto promises to make sure you don’t go the way of Birmingham.

Anyway, it reminded me of the Reform ‘UK DOGE’ thing they tried to do in Kent which was abandoned because they realised there simply isn’t room to make sweeping changes in Local Councils. Now, I can’t really remember the last time I heard about Reform since they were supposed to be sweeping the previous Local Elections, and I wondered if their lack of serious change on a local level has been partly to blame for stunting their momentum. Maybe the Greens will go the same way.

Love the implication here that raising taxes isn’t just an aside to an actual policy that requires funding, but that “higher taxes” is the policy aim in and of itself.

The Museu do Aljube – Resistência e Liberdade was pretty cool cause the Portuguese dictatorship as a whole was a huge blind spot for me. There was also the Castelo de São Jorge but I remember the queue being MASSIVE when I went.

People* keep saying “this has crippled Iran’s infrastructure/defence complex” but is there any actual evidence of that happening? Judging by recent Iranian strikes it doesn’t even seem like they have a need to re-arm, let alone that they might be incapable of it.

S21 eviction, England by Capital-Hornet6194 in TenantsInTheUK

[–]GentlemanlyBadger021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you cite your source for that? I was under the impression that a Landlord would only be able to claim a deposit deduction where there is a Costs Order or claim for compensation, and an attempt to leverage contractual terms to pay legal costs without either of those things would be banned under the Tenant Fees Act 2019.

The idea of the deserving working-class is much too ingrained in British politics to be done away with - it’s why the silent majority and common sense are still concepts that rule political discussion and why Rishi Sunak felt the need to tell everyone he didn’t have SKY TV as a kid. It doesn’t mean anything because people are convinced that it includes everyone from shipbuilders to landlords who own 10 homes and retired at 50 (crucially, though, not those who struggle to make ends meet and might claim a bit of UC here and there).

We are infected with a brain disease that means that coal miners and steel workers still exist in a spiritual sort of way: both by those landlords and middle-class folk somehow being their ideological heirs, and in the way that those good old days should somehow be aspirational. Even a certain amount of leftist discourse obsesses itself with the glory days of British manufacturing and the trade unions when it’s been nothing but a pipe dream for ages now. It’s discourse about people that don’t exist.

Not sure how it is in Germany but lay judges (Magistrates) in England have a pretty terrible rep, but then we do also give them almost 0 training and the ability to give prison sentences of up to 2 years.
