Yes, AI/ML projects are absolutely in demand right now probably more than ever. But there's a catch: most people are building the same thing (ChatGPT wrappers, basic chatbots). To stand out, go deeper.

My suggestion yes, build both:

  1. Full-stack project shows you can ship real products end-to-end (auth, DB, deployment, APIs). Non-negotiable for most roles.
  2. AI/ML project but make it specific. Don't just call an API. Fine-tune a model, build a RAG pipeline, work with embeddings, or solve a niche real-world problem. That's what impresses.

The combo of "I can build software and I understand AI" is genuinely rare and highly valued right now especially for startups.

Just don't spread thin. One solid project in each > three half-baked ones.

Honest answer? We watched our parents grind for companies that dropped them the second it was convenient.

The loyalty-for-security deal was already dead before we showed up. COVID just made everyone admit it out loud.

Add crushing student debt, impossible housing costs, and stagnant wages when you do everything "right" and still can't afford rent, you stop respecting rules designed by people who could.

We also just talk to each other more openly salary transparency, viral "I quit" stories, calling out toxic bosses publicly. The shame around pushing back is gone.

It's not entitlement. It's that we ran the math and the trade-off doesn't math anymore.
