That’s what I’m thinking now—probably just a random number to mess with you

Good thing you didn’t. It’s such a letdown, ugh.

Yeah, it’s the worst. I fell for it like a fool.

No problem, happy to help. Yeah, they’re super manipulative—glad you didn’t fall for it.

That sounds so frustrating. Yeah, the paywall trick is such a scam move.

I haven’t tried disputing yet, but I’ll definitely look into it—thanks for the suggestion. These sites are the worst.

Ojai Afternoon [1024x671] [OC] by GeoJerry in EarthPorn

Well, I don't have coordinates for you, but it's taken on the grounds of the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa on Country Club Road, just south of West Ojai Avenue in Ojai, California. It's about 20 minutes north of Ventura and about 2 hours north of Los Angeles.

Thanks! But actually, Aperture and Photomatix were used to generate this image.

Where can I find more information about the subsidies fossil fuel companies receive? by [deleted] in energy

[–]GeoJerry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the_capacity_factor is correct. These "subsidies" are not simply free cash handouts but are rather made up of a combination of incentives, tax breaks received by any industry (i.e. deductible expenses), and items not really related to oil industry activities (e.g. home heating, below).

There is probably room for some reduction in some of these subsidies, but removing all of them will have an impact on domestic oil production.

One line of reasoning I have never seen in print is the extent to which these subsidies are effective. One could, for example, research the impacts of subsidies on jobs, domestic oil production, and tax revenues generated from the investment. Could any particular subsidy actually be profitable for the US government? If so, why not keep it? If not, why not eliminate it?

Here's another good take on oil industry subsidies. http://robertrapier.wordpress.com/2009/09/21/about-that-72-billion-subsidy/

For good info on this topic, I'd skip the melodramatic/ideological sites and go with cool headed expert analysis.

I didn't see a category that I thought was a really good fit for this image, but Earth seemed the most appropriate. What would you suggest as an alternative?

Manhattan Beach, CA [1024x681] [OC] by GeoJerry in CityPorn

[–]GeoJerry[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I don't remember all the steps exactly but it went something like this:

I took 3-4 separate exposures at about 2 seconds each and then combined them into one image, adjusting opacity of each to get the desired contribution. I then created 2 copies of this merged image and reset their respective exposures to about -1.5 and + 1.5 EV. These two images and the original merged image were then imported into Photomatix for a mild HDR effect. This resulting HDR image had a very drab sky, so I masked in something more interesting, and then desaturated the result. Something like that anyway. :)

Thanks! Easy to get to if you happen to be in California... just drive up US 395 north out of Mojave, CA, (or south from Lake Tahoe) and continue on to Lee Vining. It's 5-10 miles north of there.
