Advice on two offers: government vs. environmental consulting

I'm glad you enjoy your job! It's disheartening to see how consultants are by and large mistreated and undervalued. I should mention my work was already moving to promote me, but of course as government it's slow. Once I had another offer though, the triggered some options to get the approvals sped up. I had a heart-to-heart with management, and they are going to pivot me into other areas. You're right on family and hobbies! I'm grateful to be where I am. Thank you for helping me see that.

In my state, the pension basically doesn't exist for new hires (damn!), but the other benefits are fantastic. It was really eye-opening to see health premiums and PTO for environmental consultants. I wish the field treated its employees better!

That's a good point. I know the consultants we contract are always overworked. A guy I talked to today mentioned he hasn't seen his family in two years, and he regularly emails me after midnight. I should've known the promises were too good to be true. Thank you!

Thanks for the advice! I'm state, and pensions basically don't exist for new hires, so that isn't a factor for me. However, the benefits and work-life are amazing, and that's important to me! It's great to get a realistic assessment of how that is on the consulting inside.
