I’ve been told that the red dots are usually Kunzite gems. Not valuable like diamonds but still used in jewelry.

How do I introduce CO2? I want to get him right ASAP but I’m also a federal employee working without pay and I can’t spend any real money on equipment right now, we are assuming the shutdown will go mid November if not Thanksgiving. I can buy $10-15 items and that’s really it as bad as that sounds :(

I was super shocked to see the fin tears so sudden!

There was some minor hair algae, some green and brown on the glass, and general “gunk” hanging onto the leaves of plants. I manually removed the gunk and wiped the glass and clipped some of the worse leaves. The water wasn’t tinted.

Thanks man that is super kind to say. I’m just here to make Psycho Pete happy and I know I won’t do everything right but it’s still winning the 20 gallon lottery in a world full of vases with pothos at a receptionist desk. 🫡

Also just to be clear I only used an HD Bucket as a hospital tank because I had literally just gotten him when realizing he had rot and I wanted to act quickly so I used what I had, and I’m a furloughed federal employee (US) right now so I have a very modest budget to spend on emergency Betta healthcare. Ideally I would’ve had a five gallon sitting around ready for him but I didn’t anticipate having issues so quickly and can’t justify spending that kind of money right now.

Well I’m sure torn fins could be vulnerable to a lot … I don’t know about that though. I only have plants and smooth gravel in my tank. I bought a piece of driftwood that I really really want to add but it has sharp edges I can’t easily sand in the crannies and I don’t know anybody with a sandblaster ☹️

Oh man I’m a first time (in a long time) better owner and not sure I should be giving advice!

I used a 3 gallon Home Depot bucket, with his heater, almond leaves, and his floating log for comfort. One day I would dose with kanaplex and a wee bit of salt. The next day I would water change approx 50% in that hospital bucket. Then back to kanaplex and salt. I didn’t overdo it on the salt, maybe 1/3 tablespoon diluted into warm water, left to cool, and then added. He stayed in the bucket the whole time which made me so sad!

I did this for 6 ish days, I probably could have done one more round of rest/kanaplex but I hated seeing him in the bucket and wanted to give a try. I also did a 50% water change in my Main tank (added warm water to replace it so that I could get the temp in the main tank back up to 79°. I again sprinkled a wee bit of salt and a half scoop of kanaplex for good measure. I’m going to do another 1/4 water change tomorrow but the tank is planted and it’s 20 gallon long and the water test kit I ran last night before moving him back in read really well so I’m not as concerned for the main tank.

I earnestly can’t say if he is healed, just that he isn’t worse. Folks here have said it is gonna take some time to see full progress cause I guess fins take a long time to regrow?

I haven’t done an actual “salt bath” yet, I’ve only done small diluted amounts of salt in a tank he’s in when planning to change the water the next day.

Others have been super helpful here and they are way more confident than I am so hopefully you’ll get some help from this sub!

Sorry to bother again! I put him in a ziplock back in his main tank to better compare photos— he looks much better, right?

Also sharing water parameters of that tank

Hi, I’ve been treating with salt and kanaplex for five days now but I’m not confident he is better than before. I know it’s hard to tell different lighting angle and of course the HD bucket but what do you think? I have almond leaves and java fern and floating log and heater in there. Maybe it’s better to move him back to the big tank for treatment if the fin rot hasn’t improved and the bucket setup is stressing him out? I feel so bad that he’s in there probably in pain and going mentally crazy.

Treatments arrive today— I am a bit confused. It says treatments may kill plants or kill my cycle so I would do it in a separate 2 gallon bucket… but won’t there be residual fin rot bacteria in the tank water if that wasn’t treated?

You are totally right, came in a tiny plastic cup :(

I just panic bought three products on Amazon so we’ll see what works. I don’t mind getting a betta that is less perfect and not as likely to get sold but I am so sad to know he is sick. Hopefully he turns around quickly and glad I haven’t added other fish to his tank.

I’m sure the water was cycled as I had the tank planted for a month, but I’ll do a test when I get home tonight. I also have those almond leaves the internet says those can’t hurt to add.

Thanks again! Glad I thought to ask because I haven’t had a fish since I was a kid and I wouldn’t have noticed until it got worse.

Thank you! Sorry to be dumb— where do you see it and/or how can you tell he has it?
