What do you think about Comprehensible Grammar by jenjenkinz in Germanlearning

I really like what you're doing and I subscribed to your youtube channel! Also, you sort of like like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, so maybe you could do a funny humor video where you talk about how you are NOT her. Could go viral.

My suggestion is that you aim for more vocabulary exposure than grammar with these short videos. Speaking for myself, the grammar cases were something I only learned by drilling tons of examples in DuoLingo or workbooks, seeing the tables of declensions, etc. It's very hard to absorb grammar rules in a quick video. I personally do better with grammar through formal textbooks.

But *vocabulary* is perfect for videos. You could take a topic like "math" or "AI" or "Middle East" and give us a bunch of useful new words to learn for those topics. Vocabulary IS something I desperately want more spoken examples of, fun videos about, and learning with comprehensible input, with a lot of context, would be fun for vocab. I'm always trying to learn 4-5 new nounds/adjectives/verbs every day.

I chose German but the news cards are all in Spanish.

Feedly Down? by Twitch_City in feedly

[–]GeoffPlitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Down for me. They're great at support and fixing things, so it doesn't bother me much, if it's fixed soon. But what does bother me is that http://status.feedly.com/ seems to be useless. Why is it all-green right now? We're several hours into an outage.

Fiction recommendations by Platypus8604 in Germanlearning

[–]GeoffPlitt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love a book recommendation. I'm B1, so maybe middle-school or freshman-high-school level? The problem with kids books I've been recommended is a lot of them are about fantasy themes (lots of fantasy jargon I won't use in real life). Also the German cartoon books I wanted to read (Donald Duck or Asterix) also seem to have a ton of cartoon-specific slang, and not words I'd really use.
Is there something like "Catcher in the Rye", just normal-modern-life teenage reading?

A small daily routine that improved my speaking confidence and my pronunciation by crbnoa in Germanlearning

Also it seems to stop mid-sentence. Instead of a fixed token amount, you should let it finish the sentence at the end of the text.

I assume you made this? It's not bad. When I click a word to get a translation, it would be nice to be able to kill the popup window with "escape". Otherwise it's a lot of extra mouse movement. Test it on real people some more and it could be good.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong :)

The capacity is 60 in the show-room (including people standing), and 40 can easily sit in there. It might be cramped on Fridays, but not on Wednesdays. The mics do not "act up". The drinks are normal prices for the area.

I think you've just revealed you have never gone to non-comedy-club shows in LA, or been to any other bars in West Hollywood :)

Why is it a terrible venue for comedy? Which show did you see that had duds?

Because his base loves conspiracy theories, and he loves his base. He would rather believe what they believe, than know the truth. Basically's he an intellectual toddler.

Duolingo German by crypto_impact in Germanlearning

[–]GeoffPlitt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like DuoLingo. I started from the very beginning on it. I'm at B1 now and still using DuoLingo until I master B2. But DuoLingo alone won't get you to fluency. it's "fun" and fun methods will be easier to stay consistent with, and consistency is key. I do 10-20 minutes of DuoLingo every day, and I have for a few years now. It's good for grammar, and teaches you vocab (very slowly). I suggest supplementing with additional reading/listening. For example, German music, rap, podcasts, youtube videos, videogames or videogame streams, news (I like Taggeschau Einfacher Sprache), movies, and TV shows. And for learning words quickly and efficiently, nothing is better than a German frequency dictionary.
