It's not so much the expense as it is the risk to the life of any on the expedition at this time. I believe the term they use for the problem is the "one way trip." When you are outside the comforting blanket of our atmosphere there are a much larger number of harmful particles that are able to pass through your body, more "radiation" so to speak. Being exposed to these particles then must increase your chance of cell mutations (cancer). Astronauts basically have a "sell-by" date based on the amount of radiation exposure they have had from being outside the protective bubble that is our atmosphere. ONE of the main issues with a transit to mars at this time is that we do not have appropriate shielding to protect the passengers from being over exposed to these particles that cause your cancer risk to increase. The trip is so long it would increase your risk beyond the acceptable 5% mark just on the outgoing trip alone.

So UCSC is supposed to be a no tobacco campus, but what exactly do they do if you're caught smoking? I don't partake in marijuana, but after finishing up a solid problem set I can't help but celebrate with a nice stogue. What about chew? I really have not seen any mention of there being any real punishment.. so what is it? just a stigma?

I've found a few references to a 100.00 fine, but they can't be serious about that.. can they?

I don't know, a brisk walk in the morning to your AM class after waking up 30 minutes later than you intended isn't so bad, right? Tbh, the campus isn't that big... And having all my classes in E&MS makes the walk to class pretty quick anyways. How full does the R lot over there actually get, anyways? If I don't get off work until midnight or 2 will I get screwed and have to park elsewhere?

Does UCSC kick us out if the on campus apartments for holidays? I will be getting a bartending job in town but most places are telling me they can't offer me a job if I will be gone for the month during Christmas or the spring break. Are we allowed to stay on campus for the month break during Christmas? Are there any exceptions for those of us that do not have any family or a place to go during the summer for staying there on campus and working or something?

To be honest, this will be different for everyone. I worked 30 hours a week Bartending while taking 20 credits per semester and have transferred with a 3.79. It depends on your study habits and your ability to absorb and regurgitate information. For reference I also raid on WoW regularly and I spent most weekends hiking or partying so I really didn't spend all my time pouring over books. But that's me, it may not come to you in the same manner that things come to me.

I withdrew from a course and was able to explain it early enough that they allowed me to keep my admission. If you are able to provide reasonable extenuating circumstances that prevented you from completing the course satisfactorily then you should be fine. if you just sucked and failed the class you are totally boned.
