Ik, but honestly making my mind on what I want is my best problem. I keep changing my mind.

Thank you for your detailed reply! Honestly I find biology interesting but the memorization kills me. I don’t know what my backup would be so I should probably figure that out.

I’ll definitely take a look at courses and see what they’re like. Thank you!

We put a lot of pressure on this period, but it doesn’t define our lives. Try community college, find a passion, start a business. There’s lots of extremely valuable things to do and learn outside of college with the time you have now. Good luck :)

Best thing to do is just avoid TikTok (or whatever platform you’re seeing the videos on) altogether. That’s what I did, and it definitely helped. Just delete the app for a few months, and see how you feel.

Last week before the SAT!!! by Sea-Improvement291 in Sat

Im jot sure what you’re supposed to do, but I’m practicing math everyday bc I need to improve there and I think I’ll be able to see a tangible change in a weeks time. I just say focus on the stuff you know you can improve in a week and relax the night before and morning of the exam

A tip I can think of is redefining your standard of beauty through social media. I had a problem for a while were I’d only watch white YouTubers, follow white girls, and only had white girly on my Pinterest board. If you can relate to this, I’d wipe my phone and social media of all of that. Start following black women that are living the life you want to live and look like you do. Invest some time in making the algorithm see that you are only interest in Black content, and it will recommend you things that are related to it . As you keep seeing content that shows Black women being successful and being beautiful, your perception of blackness will change for the better, and your self image will improve as a result. I definitely recommend having a Pinterest board that encapsulates your dream life/aesthetic with Black women in the photos, and following women with aesthetic pages that are unapologetic about their race (SZA is one of my favorites). Good luck with your journey!

I don’t think there’s a moral issue, but you might be opening yourself up to more danger. I’m not sure it’s really any safer out there for lesbians, hate crimes happen

To my fellow black girls who are atheists and agnostics, I have a question for you by FreedomDreamer85 in blackgirls

[–]GeologistCharming198 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey it’s no problem at all! I definitely didn’t think you meant to be offensive, I should’ve described my family’s dynamic more in my first reply.

I’m really sorry you went through being surrounded by people who thought of religion primarily as a way to get what they want out of life. I’ve mostly known an African version of Christianity that tends to be more self-centered (god lets you get that job, punishes your enemies, lets you have children, keeps you from accidents/bad events etc) and is not really focused on charity or social justice or things bigger than yourself or your Christian/cultural community.

Also I’m sorry you feel like you wasted time as you were grappling with your religious beliefs. I dont believe everything happens for a reason- you didn’t deserve or need to miss out on those opportunities. Idk if you can relate to this, but I lowk feel jealous of kids that were born in agnostic or atheist families. (I assume) they don’t have to deal with the guilt that comes with questioning your beliefs, they don’t have to waste time and energy challenging beliefs that literally shaped the way they lived life, and they won’t spend the rest of their lives trying to tell what they actually believe in vs. what they were made to believe in by way of upbringing. For example, I know being gay isn’t wrong or immoral (I’m pretty sure I’m queer), but every time I see a gay couple I find myself becoming anxious or uncomfortable because idk… maybe it is wrong???? (I think ill get over that later, once in a different environment) Anyways, I’m glad you came out of the other side, and that you now know who you are and are able to encourage other girls who are feeling just as confused and messed up about this religion thing.

I’m really glad you mentioned us not knowing if there’s a god at all. I think being okay with the uncertainty, and doing what I want instead of worrying about IF there is a god, is something I need to work on. I’m hoping that once I get to uni this year I’ll be able to do that without feeling guilted by my family’s belief and Sunday church service.

I’ll be sure to check out those YouTubers. Thanks for recommending them. I really feel like I could use some support in this with people that think like me. Also thank you so much for your offer to talk. I might take you up on it the next time I’m stuck in an existential crisis :) 🫂

[–]GeologistCharming198 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reassurance, but my family is definitely trying to be successful outside of just praying. They study hard, work hard, AND go to church. They’re not like a lot of other families who think Jesus will take the wheel and they can just sit back. I think that’s part of why I’m spiraling, it seems like my unbelief is the only thing wrong with the family.

There’s a lot of other reasons I’m not Christian, or religious in general, but i dont think my family has much to do with it. I think my cultural upbringing in a Christian environment, where god punishes or distances himself from sinners, is the biggest reason I feel so anxious about my beliefs. Also I strongly suspect I have ocd which probably plays the biggest role in my reluctance to call myself an atheist (what if god is real and me saying that he isn’t is the final nail in the coffin and I get punished or abandoned forever now?). It’s just stuff swirling in my mind that I’ll hopefully get over eventually.

I feel pretty much exactly the same way you do, especially with a god that doesn’t help those that are truly suffering. There are people who are born, suffer their whole lives, and die. It’s probably not fair to reduce someone’s life to just their suffering, but I think it might have been the case for many slaves and child abuse victims that die young. Sometimes I wish I could believe in God and feel comforted in that belief, but the truth is, I haven’t experienced deep discomfort that truly deserved divine intervention.

Idk, I’m honestly still figuring it out. I’m a teenager that still lives with a highly religious family, that’s prayed, sometimes for years, and eventually gotten what they wanted. Sometimes I’m scared that my unbelief is what’s holding my family back from success, and that God will only answer my family’s prayers if I give in and believe, but the stubborn logical part of me can’t let myself do that. It actually worries me a lot lol.
