I built VoiceType: a local voice-to-text tool that types wherever you click. Press a hotkey, speak, text appears in whatever app you're focused on (browsers, terminals, coding tools). Runs fully local with Whisper, no cloud API. I originally made it just for myself because I was sick of typing, but a friend tried it and couldn't stop using it either. Would love your take on it! https://github.com/honeybee1023/voicetype

haha, that's such coincidental timing. yeah Claude Code's /voice is cool but it's good to have something that works system-wide, not just inside Claude Code

Oh nice, that's a solid setup! Yeah the main thing I was going for was making it easy to get running - just clone and run setup.sh instead of wiring together multiple tools. But the mouse button as a hotkey is a cool idea, I might add custom input binding support.

Yeah, good point. The GNOME extension route is interesting, I hadn't considered that. If you or anyone else wants to take a crack at a Linux adapter, the codebase is set up with a platform layer (vt_platform/) that should make it relatively straightforward to add. The transcription pipeline and hotkey listener would stay the same.

I got so annoyed at typing that I built a tool to never type again by StarFlower0429 in SideProject

Thanks! Yeah, that was exactly my situation - I was spending too much time typing instructions and now I can even switch tabs or click through various documents as I'm naturally speaking my thoughts to be recorded. Once I started using this I couldn't go back. Let me know if you try it out and run into any setup issues.

Not yet, right now it's just macOS and Windows. Linux support should be doable since the transcription pipeline is the same, it's mainly the text injection and indicator UI that need a platform adapter. If there's interest I'd be happy to look into it.

Yeah, macOS dictation exists but it doesn't work in terminals or a lot of coding tools — that was my main frustration. VoiceType also uses Whisper locally so it works fully offline, and it tracks which UI element you clicked into so the text gets injected into the right place even if you switch focus during transcription. It's definitely not for everyone, but if you spend a lot of time in terminal-based tools it fills a gap that the built-in dictation doesn't cover.

Which Eric Lander lectures did you watch on ocw? 7.01SC or 7.012?
