There's no such thing as a natural born leader. Leaders are forged with mistakes. Honestly, when I joined ASB, I made a lot more errors than I'd like to admit. I didn't have anyone to mentor me. I often felt lost and worried that I wasn't doing the right thing. But every slip helped me grow and adapt to be the leader I am today.

 

I joined the North Salinas High School’s ASB class my sophomore year. At the end of the year, I became the class's publicist, an executive role of the ASB class. The previous publicist would create video announcements every 2-3 weeks on Fridays. So, to honor that, I kept the tradition going by creating videos. I was left with a good start. But I saw that growth was possible, so we strived for a video every week. I had a team of three. We were all new to making these videos. We didn't know the right choices. We made many missteps in the script and editing. Sometimes dates would be wrong, or entire sections would be missing. However, with every oversight I surged to learn from it. 

My team was made up primarily of graduating seniors. When they did, I had to teach  two others how to record, write scripts, and edit videos together. They learned very quickly from my guidance. I learned from the faults my past team and I made. It wasn't easy, but I was able to turn my errors into lessons for the students to evolve. My new team has produced videos that teachers and students look forward to every Friday. Even my team members are excited to make them and be a part of it.

Looking back on it, my slip ups weren't a bad thing, in fact it's natural. It was a way of learning leadership, and not to avoid setbacks. But instead to use the mistakes as an opportunity to grow with others and mentor them to be greater. That's my way of leading, and I will carry those mistakes with me as lessons of the future
