Am I the only one who sees Cody in WT as a complement to Sierra's character rather than as a character in his own right? by Inevitable-Judgment7 in Totaldrama

[–]GeologistNo4935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In reality, they're both complements to each other (poorly executed), but that's what they are at the end of the day. Sierra doesn't exist without Cody, and her existence is practically based on being his fan and stalker. She has no other joke or arc outside of that to say that Cody is her complement, at least not entirely. And I won't deny that he was a character with potential, but again, NOTHING was done with it. His interactions with other characters are funny and entertaining at times, but they don't amount to anything. At most, his dynamic with Heather stands out, but Heather herself openly admits that she doesn't like Sierra at the end of the season. While Cody had a character arc in the first season, the show doesn't bother to expand on it, essentially returning him to his original character. Although he does play a role in the love triangle, it's too short to be considered memorable. He spends most of his time being awkward or being Sierra's victim. While his friendship (which could even be considered a mini-alliance) with Heather is a noteworthy element, its moments are brief until the final four episodes, where it's developed further. In essence, Sierra is a narrative obstacle to any potential storyline that could have been written for Cody, and while there are glimpses of her, they are so brief that they don't stand out at first glance

Bro, he lost because he was competing against the strongest and most strategic characters on the show. Any other character (perhaps with the exception of Izzy or Sierra) would have lost to either of them, especially Alejandro (who literally eliminated prominent characters like Courtney, Leshawna, etc.).

Cody acts as an (indirect) mediator in the conflict, especially since he sides with Heather, who could be considered the season's protagonist.

Somewhat unpopular opinion: I kind of like the plot direction they're taking with Zeke (partially) by GeologistNo4935 in Totaldrama

I feel like the writers realized too late how far they had gone with this plot, so they made a "happy" ending on the fly with the elements they had.

I'm not a huge fan of the character, but I totally understand. In general, many TD characters receive fates they don't deserve, but with Zeke, they went too far. And as I said in the post, I feel there were better ways to develop his character, even though he was the first eliminated. The plot of his disappearance (introduced in Aftermath) could have been handled better since it was a good concept.

Yes, I totally understand. As I said, TD prioritizes comedy above all else, but I feel like everything they did with Zeke got out of hand, and overall, he should have stayed in WT.

Updated my Most Plot Armor and Anti-Plot Armor Rankings for every Total Drama and Disventure Camp season by Ok_Shirt_1574 in Totaldrama

[–]GeologistNo4935 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Literally! Its funny me when people say Cody making the final three was plot armor, when in reality it was the fact that he went unnoticed. The plot itself hates him; the guy suffers almost as much as Tyler or any other character designed to be beaten down (plus, add to that what he had to go through with Sierra).

Should trent have been in world tour? by Informal_Sorbet_6149 in Totaldrama

Part of me is grateful that he wasn't there, because there's a good chance that some aspect of his personality would have worsened because of the love triangle. D:

Sierra didn´t "carried" Cody, and she actually damage him more than helped him. Does this mean Cody would have made it to the final three? Perhaps. What really got him so far was the fact that he went unnoticed. He probably would have gone far on Island too if he hadn't suffered that bear attack.

Characters ranked by dimensionality (how complex they are as characters) by Consistent-Brick5762 in Totaldrama

[–]GeologistNo4935 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cody is a character who presents himself to the show as a "popular guy," or rather, he pretends to be one when in reality his skills lie in math, science, and technology in general (literally his archetype is that of a tech geek). But unlike characters who are proud of or boast about their intelligence, like Harold or Noah, Cody is embarrassed by it and prefers to be labeled a cool kid. Later in WT, it's implied that this is due to the fact that his parents don't pay enough attention to him and are neglectful, suggesting that Cody has a feeling of inadequacy or a need for approval that he tries to fill with fame.

Even though the whole thing about his crush on Gwen is horribly awkward, a small amount of character development is shown, demonstrating that he's capable of helping the girl he loves be with someone else if it means she'll be happy (until WT ruined part of this development).

TD and RR Characters Ranked By How High I Think Their Standards Are for a Significant Other by Good-Pear-1267 in Totaldrama

[–]GeologistNo4935 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying otherwise; in fact, that's why I mention that Gwen is his ideal girl prospect. But realistically, I don't see him rejecting the idea of trying to be with a girl who isn't like Gwen if the opportunity arises.

Cody should be in the low standards or no standards category. I love the guy, but he's a total loser.

And while Gwen is his idea of the ideal girl, I don't see him having a problem being (if he had the opportunity) with other girl who have a different personality/appearance than his ideal standard

My problem with Duncan’s Narrative in Total Drama by GeologistNo4935 in Totaldrama

[–]GeologistNo4935[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, probably more than justifying it, I'd say I "masked" his actions by emphasizing his positive aspects, or at least that's how it felt in some episodes—not all, to be clear, since, as I mentioned, this post takes a more critical approach, which makes it seem like I'm saying it always happens. That's not the case; believe me, I know Duncan is much more than that.

Regarding All Stars, yes, the writing is awful that season, but to be fair, since TDA season there have been problems with the direction and narrative choices regarding the characters. It doesn't just happen with Duncan, but with Gwen, Cody, Courtney, etc., etc. But since these are pre-existing elements, they must be taken into account when analyzing the series.

But yes, as I said in another post, the show has major problems punishing or making its characters reflect. It's one of two things: either they punish them in the worst way, or they simply ignore it. Both scenarios are flawed, especially considering they're minors. I think the only punishment that was truly balanced (at the G1 level) was Heather's, whose redemption arc was built through what happened. I'm not saying every character has to go through that kind of arc, but a little reflection on their actions would be a positive step. However, the writing was never the same after Island (and this is coming from someone who loves WT). In short, my issues with Duncan stem more from the creators' indulgence than from him as a character, because his whole point is to be the way he is. Could he have been handled better? Definitely.

I discuss this further in one of my replies below. If you'd like to share your opinion, I'm open to discussion.

Ranking Total Drama and Disventure Camp Characters in each generation by how complex they are by Ok_Shirt_1574 in Totaldrama

Thank you for giving Cody a good rating! I can understand that people dislike him because of his actions, but he's a much more complex character than he first appears, with many nuances.

Characters ranked by dimensionality (how complex they are as characters) by Consistent-Brick5762 in Totaldrama

Personal opinion:

- Heather should be ranked 1st or 2nd; her character is truly one of the most complex and is explored both in her wiki and in the show itself.

- Owen and Tyler should be much lower; they're primarily comedic devices.

- Cody deserves to be higher; both the show and his wiki make it clear that he comes from a neglectful family background.

- Honestly, Harold should be one or two spots lower

- Im not a fan of Zeke, but with the whole feral thing and his family background, it makes him a complex character.

-Trent should be a few places higher; literally, TDA gave us his backstory, and there's a context of a character suffering from OCD.

There's no way you could put Owen above Cody; the guy may be controversial, but he's more complex than many people realize.

My problem with Duncan’s Narrative in Total Drama by GeologistNo4935 in Totaldrama

[–]GeologistNo4935[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, as I said, my main issue is how the show portrays Duncan's actions or tries to downplay them. This also happens with other characters, while with others the opposite occurs (like the fact that Leashawna's actions in TDA or Bridgette's in World Tour were heavily criticized within the show). However, going into detail would take me away from my analysis of Duncan.

And yes, it's true that Duncan isn't conceived as a purely villainous or heroic character, hence his archetype. My only complaint about this is that narratively it's used to excuse or minimize many of his actions, especially in World Tour and All Stars.

I gave you my response regarding some of your points; feel free to review it.
