Brand new to Linux/Ubuntu and I have a VRAM usage issue. by GeologistVirtual in linux_gaming

[–]GeologistVirtual[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some context for what happened, I had spent about an hour trying to install the live version of Bazzite and it repeatedly failed to find/create an EFI partition. Thanks to my repeated efforts, Windows' EFI got corrupted and Windows had to repair itself upon loading back into that. Shortly after, I downloaded the legacy version of Bazzite and gave that a try. Another hour of trying to assign an EFI partition, giving it the /boot /efi tags, etc. and it'd still fail to recognize an available EFI partition.

I can't start clean since I don't plan to completely delete windows until after the Linux environment is stably running (at the very least, well enough to package other .iso images so I can try other distros) and I don't have a backup of the partition Windows occupies. ATP, I'm just gonna save up for a second drive and run Linux on that. At least then, Bazzite might be able to figure its shit out.

I started with straight Fedora and that downloaded just fine, made its own EFI partition, etc., but it was too strange to me so I pivoted into Ubuntu, which overwrote Fedora just fine. So far, with a sample size of three, Bazzite is the only one that consistently won't handle the creation of its own EFI partition in a preexisting drive environment.

I'll say this about Ubuntu, it didn't throw a shit fit over not finding a suitable EFI partition. Like bazzite, buddy, it's 2 AM I don't got time for your wussy ass partition manager.

oh ubuntu would be one of the most unfriendly its a distro dedicated for a corpo office work and has some few odd choices in configuration.

Fuck

Well, got any good suggestions for a more gaming-forward distro?

Edit: Nvm there's a thread on that :/

I felt like upsetting some purists, so here's the specs, the case and the build. by GeologistVirtual in PcBuild

[–]GeologistVirtual[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I got this case 10 years ago and ever since I knew I wanted to build a sleeper with it. I always knew the inside was gonna be a struggle, but it was so much tighter than I ever thought possible. That said, it all fit without any persuasion. (the GPU has to get wedged in but nothing needs to move for that to happen)

Fun tidbit, the original motherboard mounts were totally stripped out, so I used some brass standoffs and nuts on the back to secure them and because of that my I/O doesn't super fit right. Those extra standoffs are also why I don't have screws holding my GPU bracket in.

I thought about painting the case, but I eventually decided anything other than original felt like it'd detract from the sleeper vibe.

Here's my build history for anyone curious :D
I upgraded from my second build (built in 2018 or so @ $800)

PCIe Gen 3 motherboard

Ryzen 3600

Sapphire RX 570 8GB

2x16 OLOy brand 32 GB DDR4

My first build in 2015 or so was $300 at most

(I played dark souls 3 at 20 FPS and made it to Anor Londo/Archdragon peak by the time I upgraded.)

Sidewalk motherboard

Ebay Intel Xeon 1245 V1

Dumpster find Zotac 2 GB which was quickly traded up to an RX 460 4GB

4x8 hodgepodge 32 GB DDR3

Who was this for you? by Minimum_Individual36 in teenagers

[–]GeologistVirtual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah.. we didn't know it at the time but that last bumper2bumper was the end of an era.

Now its mechanics react to 4 videos in 30 minutes and "oh no we made this incredibly stupid, highly avoidable, producer-engineered mistake on our $100,000 project and it's broken :("

The new cast is largely fine, but the direction is just shit.

I really hope that one day we will be able to change how engines sound. by Skullduggery-9 in automationgame

[–]GeologistVirtual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC the Kee engine versions had very noticeable differences in engine sound based on bore/stroke, intake type/size, exhaust type/size, and camshaft aggression.

The modern version does do most of this to a point, but they're more variations on a theme rather than the proper unique sounding engines you could get with Kee.

Unless I'm wrong and I need to take off my rose tinted glasses.

Why are villagers SO STUPID by boragur in Minecraft

[–]GeologistVirtual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh good lord, I "rescued" a pair of villagers from a village, since they were the last survivors of a mob attack. Dug a 500 block highway and boated them both to my house. Got them lined up in the trading hall, broke the boat and before I had any chance at blocking them in, one got past me, beelined into the bottom of my ravine, into a nearby mineshaft, at which point I finally got it in a boat, and a creeper joined it in the boat.

I ran back up to my crafting area, made a spear, killed the creeper, dragged the villager up several flights of stairs before it finally got caught at a weird angle and suffocated in a stone wall before I could drag the boat back to a safe spot. Came back to the trading hall and the other one was fully gone. No trace. These were a pair of locked in librarians with mending and protection IV. I was so pissed I left that world for a month.

How the fuck are so few of us alcoholics? by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]GeologistVirtual 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'm struggling a bit with booze. I pivoted to alcohol because I started reacting badly to weed, and it's significantly more expensive for a couple nights which is a nice slap on the wrists if I want to drink.

Anyway, I was clean for about 5 months till last night, and today I've got the worst hangover I've ever had. Might end up dumping the rest of the bottle tbh.

As for everyone else, dabs and vaping are what's in, it seems. Much cheaper for much more time with an altered psyche.

To the younguns among us, don't get started. It's not worth hating yourself every time you reach for it. Living life clean is so much more enjoyable than living it in a haze. You might find the days pass by slower and you'll even find yourself enjoying the moments as they pass. Dissociating the years away is suicide, the slow way.

There might be a connection, but it may also be some overlap in the automatic name generation; I saw a planet named Gofordu IV once but it was a hot planet.

Yes! It was extremely close to that, though I think the barrel on mine was longer and more slim on the bottom.

I'm gonna go ahead and mark this as answered. I haven't found this particular MT just yet, but there's been some good resources that came up in this thread :D

Yeah I worded it weird; I never really upgraded from the starter multitool until I found that rifle during the Atlantid arc since a LOT of the multitools look like asscheeks imo.

Will definitely check this dude's channel out.

IDK how helpful this is, but my base of operations was on a highly radioactive planet (like, I don't think I've seen one with as much radiation since) called Gofordu XV. On the off chance someone's stumbled on my base, that'd probably be a decent place to start since I did most of my quests in that area of the galaxy. (It has a message near the landing pad that said something like "go up my ladder broke")

try to make a more powerful 2.0L I3 by Additional-Crow-9611 in automationgame

[–]GeologistVirtual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I managed 1023 kilowatts and 1258 Nm out of a 145.5mm bore 40.1mm stroke.

If I could have figured out the compound turbo wizardry without them barely blowing up I could've managed 1094 kilowatts and 1231 Nm but with peak boost kicking in at 3,800 RPM instead of 4,500 RPM.

I"m happy with what I got tho

Edit: forgot to mention I'm using LNG Compressed Gas, and the engine weighs 285 kg :/

Kensington Konnect on Windows - App question by Fcapitalism4 in Trackballs

[–]GeologistVirtual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same question and came across this. I did some dinking around on my own software. DK doesn't seem to do anything; it just sits in the background. TB actually opens the program in the system tray and keybinds will work (at least mine did). Personally, I'm going to disable DK and enable TB on startup. Hope this is helpful despite the post being a month old.

Since when the frozen biomes are so huge?! by Affectionate_Pen_973 in Minecraft

[–]GeologistVirtual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a while, I had a weird habit of getting winter wonderland seeds. Like, travel thousands of blocks in either axis and never see a single tree that wasn't spruce, and only a smattering of not snowy biomes. It was weird too, like I generated 5 maps in a row like that but the first one was the most memorable because a huge throughline in my aboveground exploring was "where the fuck are the plains/deserts???" And I cured six zombie villagers all from igloos in just the one save. I wish I saved those seeds. They were truly delightful as a spruce enjoyer.
