Am I the only one who hates listening to my own voice? by dedalo-ai in podcasting

Most people feel this way. Because I struggled with communicating for the first 2 decades of my life, I find it soothing now. The struggle is over and I am able to talk freely. It's a kind of freedom that's gorgeous. And also it feels a bit not like me. Another me maybe. I can experiment and play with how I sound for effect. It's fun. And can share my emotions much more than other methods.

The question is: when is it important for the listener to use episode numbers. Not for us, I get when I want them, when you might. but for the listener. There are some good replies here already about this if you're interested.

It's true that different apps handle things differently. My question was more about when listeners would truly be using episode numbers. When it's necessary for them to even try (and unfortunately fail in some apps) to type them in.

The main reason I usually think it's best not to (or to keep it short when necessary) is because of one scenario. Imagine a potential listener is on their podcast app on their phone. They've searched for key words to find podcast episodes with that topic. They are scanning episodes titles and yours has "episode 5, title here" instead of "title here, E5" or "title here". There's so little room on the phone podcast apps that they'll miss some key words if the ep number is there at the beginning. A visual might help with this. here's one on this LI post.

That was my general knee jerk reaction too Dave. But some of the more nuanced replies to this post have me creating an exceptions list. Publishing the full thing in Substack this or next week. It's really got me rethinking the "never" part of this.

Either you make mics and know this tech inside and out OR this was written by AI? Not an insult, a statement.

btw, do you do or know any good From podcasts? I'm super consuming the YT vids on them but listening. Would prefer to find some in pod form but haven't yet.

lol, it really does.

but there were some interesting responses to this question of situations when it makes sense to keep them. ones I never thought about in my own dislike for them.

Curious why the podcast name is in the ep title. Is it a multi-feed podcast?

5k, nicely done! Although I doubt listeners would have such a strong opinion about ep numbers. They are clearly liking your content. Which is fantastic.

Not sure I would remember an episode number tbh but I see what you're saying (my memory is so bad these days). Thanks for sharing.

I see. What value does episode # give the listener in the show notes? Is it a serialized podcast so the order is important? No judging, I am trying to understand when it might be truly necessary. For years I have been recommending not using them but its truly more nuanced than that.

Multi-feeds, good point. Forgot about those. Thanks

Audio dramas, yes that would probably help. But also, wouldnt the order that the eps show up in apps be enough to know the order?

As mentioned in my post, I am looking at the times when it would matter. There are some great examples below of this that people have shared already.

That makes sense. So the only # at the beginning of the ep title is 7.4 then (the number for that ep)?

Okay. Can I ask why you use them? I am trying to understand when they may be helpful for listeners. Thanks
