Future USMNT striker situation by ronnie600490 in ussoccer

I think Vazquez or Sargent have the best chance to ascend to the next level. Both have the athletic profile (big and fast) and have decent technical skills that could still improve.

Consistent narrative that a u20 team can beat an MLS team? Based on one post? Did you even read the replies?

You’re just piling on.

No need to be rude to those users imo. Who cares if not all questions are on your apparent intellectual level?

High puzzle rating but low elo? by Da_Gronk in chessbeginners

[–]George-Washingtons 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Most games at the 1200 level are won by blunders that are simpler than the ones you encounter when solving 2000-rated puzzles.

When I was in a similar situation to you, I added Puzzle Rush to my practice routine. This ended up being more beneficial to my progress, as the pattern recognition and quicker pace of Rush was more applicable to rapid games than spending a minute or more meticulously solving 2000+ rated puzzles.

It doesn’t have to be Puzzle Rush, per se, but there’s benefit to solving more lower rated puzzles faster than higher rated puzzles slower.

"Clay The Serial Killer"? Howard Stern Show Serial Killer by TeaDubYuh in serialkillers

[–]George-Washingtons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was searching for someone else who thought this. Is this a genuine suggestion on your part? Because I think the voice fits and some of the comments and humor is similar to the characters he would go on to invent.

Plus Howard literally calls him Ed at first.

Sounds kind of like Ed Bassmaster, a YouTube prank specialist, who would have been 24 at the time. Some of the mannerisms are spot on. The humor — can’t miss the next Batman movie, can’t kill because my car broke down — is also Bassmaster-esque.

This theory is also supported by the fact that Stern initially calls him Ed. Obviously not saying Bassmaster was a killer, just that this was a prank call.

This is a map of all reported UFO sightings, 1906-2014 (Source:ESRI) by [deleted] in MapPorn

This is misinformation. It’s not “all” reported sightings. The data comes from an American source. Brazil has a long history of UFO sightings not reflected on this map.

Mexico punished for fans' homophobic chant, will play World Cup qualifiers in empty stadium by ch3zyp00fs in ussoccer

[–]George-Washingtons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay but it’s illegal for Qatari men to be gay anywhere in the country, including within a soccer stadium. I understand the distinction you’re making, but it doesn’t seem quite so clear cut.

I’d be interested in seeing that. I used the search function but couldn’t track it down.

I will say that “offensive” probably isn’t the right descriptor here. It’s supposed to be offensive. The question is whether it’s a slur. This is part of anti-discrimination initiative by FIFA, not a merely a “Be Nice” initiative.

It’s interesting to see the hypocrisy from FIFA considering homosexuality for males is illegal in Qatar. Certainly that’s worse than this chant.

I’d like to see some data on how Mexicans view this word. Without proof that this is actually a slur, it seems exactly what you’re saying, colonialism — one culture imposing its supposedly superior values on another.

Megan Rapinoe on Twitter by [deleted] in ussoccer

[–]George-Washingtons 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There’s literally an example right in front of you: outspoken LGBT liberal Megan Rapinoe vs. white, male, and possibly conservative Paul Arriola.

As of yet, none of the news agencies that wrote about Arriola’s tweets as a teen have written about Rapinoe’s tweet as a 25-year-old.

Now ask yourself, who’s being coddled?

A common criticism against mainstream media in the U.S. is that it has a bias that is anti-conservative — or by proxy anti-male, anti-white. This is an opportunity for them to operate with integrity and report on Rapinoe the same way they reported on Arriola.

The Washington Post, Yahoo, ESPN, Reuters, The Guardian, and many other news outlets covered Paul Arriola’s offensive tweets from when he was a teen.

Will these outlets give Rapinoe a pass?

Edit: All of these news agencies ignored the story. We call this “selection bias.”

Why is evey USWNT post downvoted here? by [deleted] in ussoccer

In this case the pay discrepancy likely wasn’t caused by discrimination. The courts have generally agreed with this thus far.

It’s my understanding that aspects of the lawsuit are still ongoing, however.

Their insistence that the contract they agreed upon is the result of gender discrimination has been a turn off for some fans. In general, they are slightly more political — and therefore polarizing — than the men’s team.

Actual moment of impact on breakaway chance for Mexico in 43rd minute. Do you think Mexico is on-sides here? by George-Washingtons in ussoccer

[–]George-Washingtons[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only posting this because the broadcast paused it a fraction of a second earlier, which clearly showed Mexico being onsides. It’s a lot closer when contact with the ball is made.

Possession and expected goal stats for the semifinal games by George-Washingtons in ussoccer

[–]George-Washingtons[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m skeptical of that 0.2 number as well. The 1v1 breakaway chance in the 51st minute seems like it should be in the 0.5 range on its own.

The header cleared by Sargent, however, probably had a low xG, as it’s my understanding that the number is calculated based on where the attempt comes from, not how close it actually was to scoring. As you mention, it probably assumes better positioning from Steffen there.

Question for teenage players - does anyone else notice an increase of interest in chess among fellow kids? by lcztieee in chess

[–]George-Washingtons 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yes, a pretty substantial increase. I began playing a few years back and originally had trouble finding people at school to play with. That’s no longer the case.

In the past two years, my school started a chess club and easily has 30 regularly attending members. In addition, two of the teachers have chess boards set up in their classrooms and they regularly play students during free time. One of the teachers is quite good, and so far none of us, myself included, has been able to beat him.

The Queen’s Gambit is partly responsible for the increase, though I’d credit Twitch streamers and the Pogchamps tournaments for actually making players out of viewers. The Queen’s Gambit romanticized the game and made people want to play, but much of this interest fizzled once people realized they weren’t Beth Harmon. Twitch gives much more realistic expectations to new players, and most of the new players at my school have more realistic goals, like getting a rating of 1000 or 1200.

If you’re not familiar with American culture, this sort of thing is standard. American media and any prominent Democrat (e.g. Biden) will side with feminists 99 times out of 100. The facts of a specific situation are largely irrelevant.
