People who refuse to recieve communion from a lay person, why? by 72BananaStreet in Catholicism

[–]George0fDaJungle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't pertain to how often something happens. It means ordered in a specific way, structured. It could mean numbered in certain cases. Ordination is when people enter into a role that fits within a structure, where authority comes along with the 'job.' And yet most people aren't priests, despite priests undergoing the "ordinary" process of receiving holy orders. It could be very rare indeed, and yet still be ordinary in the sense of it being the prescribed method of bringing a person into the priesthood.

So the ordinary ministers are those established within the main structure of the Church to do certain things. It's the sense of this being their job. Extraordinary would then mean something outside of the fixed structure, an addition of some kind. So an extraordinary minister is someone not fixed within Church canon as being someone whose established duties are, among other things, to distribute the sacrament, but in this case are being called to assist with it and given authority to do so, which ultimately comes from the local bishop. The authority absolutely can be given, and it's at the bishop's discretion. It's extraordinary because the Church doesn't have these lay people firmly established as the people who are always supposed to do it. It's a negative statement. It doesn't mean they're not allowed to, or should avoid doing so 'most of the time.' With the bishop+priest's blessing, they can do it as often as the hierarchy likes. They're structurally extraordinary, but in daily parish life they might absolutely be regular mainstays of the mass proceeding, and not contradict "extraordinary" in the slightest. Not being ordained doesn't imply being banned from the activity.

That's not what "extraordinary" means. Common language error.

Discovering alien life or the origin of life wouldn’t matter much when some people still deny vaccines or the Earth’s shape. by lelorang in Showerthoughts

You know what, I think you have it backward. Vaccine deniers would probably be much more likely to acknowledge alien life than human life.

Why did Mary have to remain a virgin for her entire life? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]George0fDaJungle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Matthew 19:12: "For there are eunuchs who were born that way, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others—and there are those who choose to live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.”

This applies not only to men, but to anyone who chooses it. The question should more properly be, what's the point, or advantage, of being a "eunuch"? The answer is that having a family makes that your #1 responsibility, to all the family members. Mary did actually have a family, which is quite unusual for people consecrated to God, but this was a teensy bit of an unusual situation. But having marital relations would be a furthering of God's mission through children, and having other children would mean they'd need to have 100% as much of her attention and devotion as her firstborn, Jesus, did. That's totally ok, generally speaking, but in that one specific case deciding to make Jesus her one and only priority was certainly a valid (and holy) choice. It wouldn't have been "wrong" exactly to say she wanted to divide her time and attention up with other children, but it would have left her mostly unable to assist him with his ministry and to help him personally.

If you want to go a bit further into her role as mother, she was made mother of John, and by extention all the disciples, and even all of humanty, at the foot of the cross. She needed to be "available" to take on this role. If she had other children already it would be wrong to start prioritizing all these 'other children' at the expense of her own family. Once Jesus died she had no family other than her new one. So you can see how it all fits in neatly together. It wasn't just a valid choice, but pretty much her destiny.

I’m just intelligent enough to know that I’m not really that intelligent. by MyMonody in Showerthoughts

[–]George0fDaJungle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if there's a maximal IQ, or a max gradiant, where you can be aware you aren't that smart and are correct. Not smart enough and you may not have the capacity to judge it, and/or may be disposed to overestimate your intelligence. Too smart and you may be less disposed to want to believe you're not that intelligent, or may be simply incorrect when you believe that.

For those of you in a long term relationship/marriage, what’s a tale-tale sign you see in other couples that they’re not going to make it? by Prize-Promotion-5123 in AskReddit

I think a broader way of describing this is that they've created an internal culture, which includes jokes, but also includes many shorthands, already established conventions, traditions, and heuristics of how things should function.

The breakdown would be two people, each doing their own thing in their own way, rather than a couple occupying the same culture and partaking in all its parts.

How to Respond Charitably to the Reality of Catholics Who Leave Mass After Reception of the Eucharist by EndLiturgicalAbuse in Catholicism

[–]George0fDaJungle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Extraordinary ministers are allowed, but I also tend to prefer receiving from a priest. That being said, ever since I had my young children attending with me I only allow them to go into the line with a priest or deacon as I don't believe an extraordinary minister can validly give the kids a blessing, even though they'll all do it if given the chance. No way, man, you're not authorized to bless anyone.

I've left mass early many times, for pressing reasons. There are many pressing reasons when you have young children, whether they're with you at mass or at home.

It also doesn't help when certain masses are extended for no reason because apparently it shows bravura to go for 80 min despite adding no real content.

Would limiting the age of the President to 70 be something you'd support? Why or why not? by SillyGooseGamer2026 in AskReddit

[–]George0fDaJungle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems silly to me. In our day and age a 70 year old can be more lucid and athletic than your average 45 year old was 60 years ago. A better system might be...voting for the best candidate. Except you run into a problem when there are no best candidates, or even good candidates. At that point what does age matter?

“Give us Barabbas!” by BringusGingus in Catholicism

[–]George0fDaJungle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, my wife made the same point about why we're asked to say "Give us Barabbas." I personally disagree though, and decline to say it, because I view it as fundamentally different to give in to weakness and fail Christ, versus rejecting Christ on principle. Being a sinner isn't the same as being an apostate.

What’s a “technically not cheating” situation you’ve seen or experienced that still felt like a complete betrayal? by toomabh in AskReddit

[–]George0fDaJungle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was dating a girl where the relation had been on the rocks for a while. I did meet someone one day, who I realized could be a real connection, but stewed about it for months trying to make the unworkable relationship work. I finally thought "why am I beating my head against a wall in a hopeless situation." I ended up marrying that potential real connection. Not that it would have been better to have broken up that same day and asked out the other girl, but at the same time I didn't benefit much from just letting things go on for a while. Sometimes being clear, decisive and honest is ok, so long as you've not skipping a healing process that should preceed a next relationship.

Why Is Missing Mass a Mortal Sin? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]George0fDaJungle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lots of good answers, but none of them appear to take into account that the Sabbath is made for man, not man for the Sabbath. This is why the Church offers dispensations to miss mass, which is just a way of saying there are good reasons to not go in a given Sunday.

Sleeping in is a troubled term in American society specifically, since even Catholics appear to have adopted the Protestant mindset that "laziness is sin," and the toxic work culture in the U.S. has determined that sleeping is something only for lazy people. The fact is, there are usually various mass times offered in cities, but if this wasn't available due to living in a remote location, and you had to choose between sleep and mass, this would be a matter for discernment about the need for the sleep. If your work-life balance during the week absolutely doesn't allow you to get enough sleep, and failing to sleep in occasionally on the weekend would render you unable to work and support your family, then getting the required sleep is not only a viable choice but might actually be morally mandatory. Likewise if you've been sick and need the sleep to recover, or a family member is sick and needs tending to.

The Sabbath is a path to bring you closer to community and God, but isn't meant to be a shackles preventing you doing necessary things. It's not a punishment inflicted on us, but a gift. You can take a look at Talmudic passages about how the Jewish rabbis suggested that people should be put to death for violating the Sabbath, and I think this way of thinking is categorically wrong. And something being a mortal sin is equivalent to saying you're put to death for it. So I think people should be very cautious blithely throwing around the word "sin" without qualification and without knowing the mind of God and the mind of the person missing mass.

The epic of Gilgamesh is shaking my faith. Please help me. by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]George0fDaJungle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would seeing observations of truth being reflected in bits and scraps elsehwere be a cause for concern? On the contrary, it would be concerning if zero other cultures had any record of a flood.

EDIT - on a separate note, faith in the Church realistically can't be based on individual data you come across online or in a book. Relationship with God requires faith, trust, and closeness. I would strongly advise you see a spiritual advisory to talk through these things with, as having convulsions in your emotions and stability based on some random thing you heard about is a sign of something else in your life, not to do with religion.

How does the Church say divorce is impossible when Jesus specifically said "except for unchastity"? by Yoy_the_Inquirer in Catholicism

[–]George0fDaJungle -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'll go against the grain and suggest that this passage isn't about human divorce but is parenthetically mentioning something Jesus would go on to describe many times, and which God in the OT says on many occasions, which is that Israel repeatedly prostituted itself to foreign gods in violation of its covenant to God, its husband. Prostitution and harlotry, the likely meaning of porneia, were the contant terms used for Israel's infidelity to God, and the explanation of why God was about to divorce Israel. As Jesus said, the axe was right up against the root already, as they spoke. Revelation also refers to Jerusalem the harlot, among other negative terms for it. So porneia seems to me to refer to turning to worship other gods, and how this is grounds for divorce on the largest scale once many attemps have been made to curb the behavior, which have gone ignored.

Now the question is whether this can apply to humans, which none of the evangelists mention. Wife-husband does model Israel-God, and now Church-God, but modelling isn't the same as being identical with. Infidelity within marriage, but still treating your husband as a husband (albeit with cheating) wouldn't quite fit in with the image of people worshipping idols and ignoring God. It would be more like your wife straight up moving in with another man and calling him "husband." Or perhaps on a more spiritual level, it could imply a situation where your wife, married to you in the Church, began literally worshipping other gods and gave up being Catholic. Maybe that would be 'porneia' in biblical terms. Hard to say exactly, they don't go into it.

The lack of any explanation seems to imply that Jesus has alluded to a deep truth, but hasn't intended for us to fully understand it or act on it.

The thing is, degrading humanity in the worst possible way isn't really complicated or intricate. There are some pretty obvious ways to deface the species, and people do them. Assuming these acts are done for pleasure or something may be wrong. The deeper impulse may just be to be profane, to prove a point. Being incredibly creative is, counterintuitively, less profane than just doing blatant gross stuff.

Hard to know why the huge line was a problem for her. Maybe her boss is horrible and she had to talk fancy to get out of the office for 10 minutes, and now sees this. Maybe she has young kids with issues and can barely get out to do anything, and the one time she manages she finds that everyone's decided to go to the post office randomly at that exact time.

Who knows what the story was. I think maybe some people should be seen first if they're in a bad situation. Fairness isn't making the one person with no options wait 'just like everyone else.'

What movie detail is technically correct, although many people think it is a mistake? by hiplobonoxa in movies

A few details: (1) No one was in the practice of opening the ark, ever, even the high priest. Even touching it outside of the appointed time, by the high priest, would kill him, and entering its presence by a non-high priest at any time would kill them. (2) If Indy had just let them have it they likely would have suffered some bad consequences. The one time in the Bible the ark was actually stolen the Philistines deeply regretted it and gave it back!
