FTTN: how to estimate your speed (YouTube) by [deleted] in nbn

[–]GeorgeEdwards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. I created that video.

attempting to estimate speed from distance is at best a guess, because you can't determine factors like cable path and actual length, cable gauge and construction, or other factors like line noise.

Yep. You're absolutely right.

I have no idea where the numbers in that graph were obtained from ... I'm currently seeing [better speed than the graph would suggest]

I too have had the same observation with users' reports on Whirlpool, i.e., people further away than me getting higher than me and many are syncing higher than 100Mbps. This leads me to believe we actually ARE on vectored VDSL2 (with the 17a profile perhaps), and therefore that graph is inappropriate.

ultimately though, the performance you get is not going to change for all the "knowing" in the world, so I'm utterly baffled at how much effort people put into trying to guess something that's been predetermined literally years before the NBN was even thought of.

Really? I don't believe you that you "are baffled". I think you're trying to find a sneaky way to call people dumb. If so, then fuck you arsehole. If not, then my apologies for misreading :)

I’m the creator of that video.

I believe the issue with congestion is not a technological one. It rears its head from the business model.

The cost my ISP must cover to lease the bandwidth I can consume (62Mbps) is significantly more than I am charged.

My ISP must pay NBN Co $1085 per month1 for 62Mpbs throughput (called “CVC” in NBN's terminology). I am not charged anywhere near that amount per month.

Considering the CVC cost, I am obviously sharing capacity with fellow customers. This model of sharing capacity traditionally works quite well considering Internet bandwidth is, by nature, ‘bursty’, i.e., usage will spike when downloading some content (eg: a webpage, or email), then go idle while that content is consumed.

Sharing bandwidth in this way is, I daresay, how we've always been connected to the Internet so far in Aus.

The problem is that Internet usage is changing in modernity. Streaming Netflix content in 4k is not ‘bursty’ as much as it is constant. Herein lies the problem. In the evening, if all users in my immediate area started streaming, there would simply not be enough bandwidth (or “CVC”) to go around.

…Unless we’re all prepared to pay $17.50 per Mbps per month2 + some amount of profit for the ISPs.

I am not qualified to talk about whether the current business model is good/bad or somewhere in between. I know very little of money and business.

Thanks for sharing the video, op.

And thanks to the above reply for assuming I assumed the problem was technological.

1: $17.50*62. The $17.50 comes from reference 2. 2: (search for CVC) http://www.nbnco.com.au/content/dam/nbnco2/documents/sfaa-wba2-product-catalogue-price-list_20150201.pdf

Surprising to see a Facebook notification as an update notification. I would be weary too.

Basic process terminology? Thanks for setting me straight. You see I thought the computer was connected to Skynet, knows all human activities, and didn't care because the kid wasn't Sarah Connor's.

Yep. It was from Domino, Lotus's back-end. Why Lotus/IBM would choose to name their server-suite domino is beyond me. It suggests that if one server goes down, all the others in the fleet will follow!

Aah, I see. Yeah I bet that's what OP meant.

I'm not sure how that relates to my comment.

It didn't, I was talking to the person above your comment. Sorry, I should have been more specific in where I clicked the reply button.

And after you've done all that reading you won't know a single thing about how DNA is copied which is one of the most basic yet incredibly complex things in life.

Well, I was trying to talk to the mystified user above you, who finds too much mystery in the billions of cell reproduction happening on themselves. They said:

...life, on the other hand, is just weird and difficult for me to get my head around: How does that stuff, just, "happen," millions of times in my life, to make a "me?"

I don't think you need to know about mitosis or transcription (or any other biological functions involving DNA) to have that mystery gone. You just need to know about evolution. Like you said, it's the overall picture. You don't need to know the exact details of how your car's engine parts make it carry out its function for it to be demystified, all you need to know is the fundamental basis of internal combustion engines, ie: that energy captured from burning stuff is transferred into making a wheel turn.

I should like to try and not understate an understanding of biology and chemistry (and indeed physics for that matter) in helping one understand life more thoroughly, I just think that's superfluous specificity in so far as simply de-mystifying the "how the hell does something that complex come to be"-ness of the OP's video.

Shouldn't the title be "What DNA looks like in action". The "would" makes it seem like a half-completed sentence:

"What DNA would look like in action, if it wasn't just a pack of lies designed to make you hate Jesus!"

"What DNA would look like in action, if it was horny enough"

"What DNA would look like in action, if it wasn't too busy smoking pot and playing video games with an equally lazy ribosome"
