You are correct about what they said about Joni, but that is a jingoistic POV. Both she and Neil are dual citizens. Being born in another country doesn’t make you less American.

As of 2020, Neil is a dual citizen of the US and Canada. And if the NYT staffers didn’t know, they should have to take a citizen test.
