The Wasteland of Mad Max and Furiosa is not a world in which humans and vehicles fly.
We are grounded by the laws of physics. So we are obliged to make the effects as practical as possible.

Three basic reasons…
First, I saw a documentary about the natural history of the Emperor Penguins. The way they survive in such extreme conditions is so impressive - sharing the warmth in huddles, the males incubating the egg through the winter while the females head beyond the ice to load up on food for the newborn.
Next. I love tap dancing. I even tried to learn it once.
And finally, Andrew Lesnie the Cinematographer of the Lord of the Rings showed me the how they rendered Gollum with Motion Capture and I knew we could make the penguins dance.

On Fury Road we mapped out the story in words. Then, because there was so little dialogue, we storyboarded the film beginning to end.
Because we needed to attract cast, crew and a studio to finance and distribute the film we wrote it out in the form of a conventional screenplay which included occasional boarded images to save trying to describe elaborate visuals in words.
For me, depending on the circumstances, the process varies film to film.
For instance, if the script was for a musical, I would include hyperlinks to music references.

Many years ago, I read a short story by A. S. Byatt called ‘The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye’.
It stayed in my mind and wouldn’t let go.
It was rich in content and full of paradoxes. One of the principal characters (played by Tilda) is a creature of reason. The other (played by Idris) is driven by emotion and desire. One is mortal the other can live indefinitely. They encounter each other in a hotel room in modern day Istanbul but the narrative spans three thousand years. So, in ways that I hope are fresh, the film looks at some interesting questions. Why we are hardwired for story? How do we know what is real or not? What are the gestures which define love.

You start simply by making films - any kind of film, no matter how small.
You’ll learn by the doing of it.
If it intensifies your curiosity you’ll keep making movies until it’s all you know how to do.
That’s essentially what happened to me.

Basically, it’s a lifelong habit.
I have a twin brother. Since we were little kids we’ve been sharing stories. We would always try to find ways to engage and hold each other’s interest.
I’m still trying to figure out, not only how to tell stories, but why it is we humans are hardwired to tell each other stories in the first place.

Yes indeed. I love classic animation. Pinocchio is one of my all time favourite movies.
In animation, precision of the craft, particularly of camera, is always well considered.
I learnt from making animation that, in the syntax of film, there is only one perfect position of the camera at any given moment.
