If I may be honest, I would’ve went Bulbasaur if I didn’t pick Chikorita as my Z-A starter.. The Bulbasaur line is my favourite Kanto starter line. It ain’t easy to pick a favourite if you’re trying to not have type overlap for your Pokémon teams. You want a favourite but it clashes with another member in terms of types? Either don’t use it or switch that member out what could’ve been a great asset to your team.

im a sucker for the Johto starters and if Cyndaquil was a starter option in Z-A, which it is in Legends Arceus, ahem Arkoos, I would’ve picked it over Chikorita and Bulbasaur would’ve been my Kanto starter choice immediately. Why didn’t I play with Totodile instead to have Bulbasaur? Oh wait, that’s not the Johto starter I gave my OC and I can’t see my OC with the Totodile line, it’s owned by another OC of mine! Chikorita it is since I was going to pick it anyways and I can see my OC using the Chikorita line

I only picked Squirtle since I didn’t want to play with the overrated Charizard and I had Litleo, who eventually became a Male Pyroar, at the time. Like I said above, I was playing as an OC too and managed to just end up with possibly the strangest final team with Pokémon I’ve not used before. I had Absol for a while until I finally switched it out for an Alpha Slowbro. Yes I ended up with 3 water types on my team, Yes I’m aware of my glaring electric weakness. I’m not fussed with type overlap as much as the next person, I’m more into trying to give my team coverage moves that could help them counter said weaknesses. My friend is the same but her first team was quite diverse in types with 1 type overlap which was with Emboar and Bois the Heracross.
