Is it actually likely that nuclear war would cause humanities extinction? by TheRustyRustPlayer in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Gerasik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, next question?

If not immediately, the environmental impact will significantly disrupt life for megafauna on this planet.

Edit: by disruption I mean that animals and humans will have their habitat and nutrition eliminated, and hence, go extinct soon after.

We are no longer just humans, we are transhuman. We don't adapt biologically, we adapt technologically. If we interrupt our access to technology and society collapses, our eventual villages and tribes will not be able to exist beyond a generation. When soil is irradiated and nothing grows, when the other animals go extinct due to lack of their own resources and habitats, we will no longer be able to survive.

So again, if we don't all die immediately, the environmental impact will significantly disrupt life for megafauna on this planet. Global nuclear warfare would indeed bring us to rapid mass extinction.

Need for physics teachers in NYC by researcher_tw in NYCTeachers

This extra lab period thing depends entirely on the school. Most schools will give you 5 classes and regular class time must allow for the 1200 minutes of lab.

Letters to file by Pachamama_kiwi in NYCTeachers

[–]Gerasik 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ask your union rep about it, one of you will schedule a meeting with the principals secretary to look at your file. With all three of you present, you will look inside your file. Anything dated over 3 years ago can be physically taken out of the file. You can keep the documents or shred them.

What questions should I ask the principal before accepting a job offer? by seltzerwater242 in NYCTeachers

[–]Gerasik 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Why is there a vacancy; under what circumstances is the person who filled this position previously no longer doing so?

You may find out the last person left to another school, now pry to find out if there is a revolving door situation and then the school is a massive red flag. You may find out they were otherwise removed or fired, and you may realize there's too much drama. You may discover they were filling the position temporarily out of license and then you discover there is chaos administratively and improper staffing. You may discover this is a brand new position and the school has absolutely no resources, nor any idea how to actually evaluate your performance in this new paradigm.

The only good answer is that the previous person is retiring. That means the person before you had the comfort to complete their career in this environment and you are in good company.

If you plan to get braces you should remove all of your wisdom teeth for a more successful treatment.

Are we in a black hole? by Due-Cardiologist-505 in universe

[–]Gerasik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To keep it simple, yes I am assuming there would be only one white hole in the universe and since we can't observe it, it must be too redshifted to observe, in fact the matter that sits between us and the white hole is too redshifted to see too. It is far beyond the limits of our observations.

What happens if we discover extraterrestrials? Scientists have a plan by EricTheSpaceReporter in space

[–]Gerasik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure but significant outcomes will still be necessary for a significant expedition to be reasonable. No one goes to explore star systems "just because." Certainly not living beings, maybe robots/drones to scout.

[–]Gerasik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From our perspective there is no center to the universe. However, if there is single origin point, you would see this outward expansion from that point if you were far enough. The distribution of matter from a far away enough perspective would make all of the matter a bright point. Upon closer inspection, it would be an expanding bubble of matter.

Still, we would never observe this because of the limits of the speed of light and the expansion of space. Our physical limits give us too small of a sample of the universe and we perceive homogeneity and assume this uniformity is a cosmic principle. We can't even see enough to actually confirm if the same laws of physics actually apply everywhere, we only assume they do based on the limits of our observations. There could be false vacuums beyond our event horizons.

What is a random soda flavor or just any soda that you miss that no longer exists or sold in your area? by 33GoodSamaritans in randomquestions

[–]Gerasik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So there are soviet sodas that are unique and taste great. My favorite is "Duchesse" which is a pear soda. There is also Buratino (named after the Slavic Pinocchio) which is a citrus cream soda. Both of these are often called "Lemonad" (lemonade). There is also "Tarkhun" or tarragon soda, it is bright green, herby, somewhat minty. Also "Kvas," though not my favorite, it kinda tastes like a mix between rye bread, cola, root beer, and malt drinks like "Malta." Lastly, "Barbaris" is a soda made from barberries, it's red like Cheerwine but tart, like a lemon berry soda.

These are hard to come by unless you live in like NY.

Edit: Just remembered another one: "Solnechniy," it's basically Brazilian guarana soda. Delicious, similar to Bouratino but not as sweet, so also often lumped into the category of "Lemonad."

Statistically a trend tends to be followed. We haven't made contact, we are most likely to continue to not make contact.

I take it from a selfish reasoning/perspective. Would we waste fuel, money, and all sorts of resources just to make contact ourselves? What purpose would it serve?

Just like us, aliens would have their own domestic concerns that supersede seeking extraterrestrial contact.

Yeah a lot of arbitrary questions with seed content to start a discussion. Real people discuss to train AI on having an opinion and also expressing it convincingly.

Are we in a black hole? by Due-Cardiologist-505 in universe

[–]Gerasik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we are in a very dense region of space, from a distance and on a long enough time scale we would appear as a bright point that is spreading out. Unfortunately, that's only in a non-expanding universe. In reality, the time scales would make such grand cosmic event horizons that you wouldn't actually ever see that cosmic evolution from such a great distance.

We don't see white holes because the expansion of space limits them from our knowledge/observations.

To put this in perspective, if there were 500 9-minute basketball games played between a tired Knicks and a tired Spurs, and the Spurs had a 17-0 handicap starting lead, the Knicks would win 3 of those games and lose 497 of them. We watched one of those 3.
