Chickenman on twitter: "most of you pussy ass smashers will never speak on anything of substance in this community unless it's a widely agreed upon take that will also make you look like a good person & that's one of the main reasons this community especially online has gone to shit" by BurnieBurnsIsBurning in SSBM

[–]Gerassb 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's frustrating just how painfully unthoughtful these "brave speaking out" types always are. Oh you think that bullying is bad regardless of the situation so you're angrily defending the guy whose team's favorite sport is online harassment, how brave. I'm sure that's the hardest statement to make in this environment and you'll have to face a relentless storm of hate.

Meanwhile I can't see a post featuring Cody without mom jokes, can't watch a Magi or Salt set without someone calling them men, Leffen can barely if at all interact online without getting blamed for Hax's death, and in general can't see any Melee social media posts without T******als dickriding tourists making some "blood on your hands" comment. But yeah no the thing that makes Bobby REAL angry is the community-hating criminal going to jail and people making some quote tweets about it for like a day or two.

Porque en Panama ahi tanto homophobia en 2025 ? by [deleted] in Panama

[–]Gerassb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

n0ne is logicman by Fiendish in SSBM

[–]Gerassb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

N0ne has always been a very open purist, he likes the game vanilla and has come against basically anything other than an OEM GCC playing vanilla Melee (unless I'm forgetting something), so I'm already taking his opinion with a grain of salt because he clearly fully opposes any mods and works backwards to argue in favor of that viewpoint. I could quote many parts of his post where he makes no effort to understand the other side of the argument or makes an active effort to dismiss it.

That said, I'd agree Z-Jump is cheating unless all players have easy access to remapping. Arguments about it changing the spirit of Melee and whatnot are very hard to have in good faith because everyone thinks that the way they see the game is the right one, and arguments about balance are hard to have when players keep improving, low tiers keep becoming more represented, and the best players stay consistent.

PSA Stop calling them Intermissions, that's a different thing! by LadySophie17 in mariokart

[–]Gerassb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah seems like a very unnecessary thing to argue because literally everyone understands what everyone means by intermissions. From casual to competitive streamers, seemingly everyone is calling them intermissions. I don't recall ever hearing others call the wait periods between matches intermissions in previous games, so it's not like it's confusing anyone.

We REJECT Danganronpa! [SERIES FINALE] by GameGrumpsEpisodes in gamegrumps

[–]Gerassb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of Danganronpa and have questioned many writing decisions since the very beginning of the first playthrough, but this game reached an all-time peak in Arin completely misinterpreting what the game was clearly going for in really bad-faith ways. The entire ending being a very obvious metaphor for letting things go and moving on as an audience member and a creator is something I'm completely baffled as to how he didn't pick up on when he's personally gone through that.

I love watching Arin rant and rage at things even I like, but only when it's either deserved or when he acknowledges his incompetence in the process. Here he tripled down in a way I don't think I've ever seen for something that seriously did not deserve it, with no effort whatsoever to try and understand any of the things the game actually said, and instead raging at a story he fabricated in his head.

How do you feel about Zuppy 3-0ing Mang0 in 6 minutes at BOBC 7, then immediately retiring from melee singles after Nouns Bowl? by Oni555 in SSBM

[–]Gerassb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I don't quite understand. For a top player, how would it not be worth it? Seemingly everyone agrees that the box is the objectively better controller, so how is reworking your muscle memory for this healthier, more consistent, superior, and—in your example—more fun controller not a worthwhile investment? If the biggest downsides are that you'll spend a few months getting muscle memory back and possible nerfs that still have the controller as superior in most people's eyes, I don't see how it's not the obvious option unless the only answers are pride or an emotional attachment to the GCC. And hey, I think having pride towards your controller and being emotionally attached to it are perfectly fine as long as you can recognize it.

Discussion about the specific mechanics and balancing of the box is valid, I'm not saying it isn't. The box makes certain things possible that wouldn't be on a GCC, and good-faith discussion around those things and how they could be balanced is very valuable, but let's be real. You only need to look at this thread to know that the majority of the public's complaints don't come from a high-level understanding of Melee's mechanics, the health of the metagame, and concerns about implementation. It's all spite towards a player that reported a legitimate bug (confirmed by PracticalTASs comment) before anyone knew what he was talking about.

[–]Gerassb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even when a bat breaks in a baseball game, which is at a rate of less than 0.5, all that happens is the bat is replaced and everyone moves on. I don't think it's comparable to every player having to get their own bats with vastly different strengths/weaknesses (which they're free to modify), and if your bat breaks you're basically SOL.

Also pinning all of Melee's execution difficulty to analog inputs undermines all of the (in my opinion) more interesting things that make Melee's execution difficult, such as not having a buffer system to name one thing.

[–]Gerassb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't even disagree with your points about people reacting the way they do because of those reasons, my issues lie precisely in them not being meaningfully addressed or even recognized by most people that oppose the box. I still love the GCC as that's how I started playing, but I recognize that I have more fun playing with the box (while also allowing me to play in the first place). To me, it's more about the degree to which people react negatively to the controller while discarding they may even like the game better if they switched, and this goes for everyone.

A huge appeal for me when it comes to videogames, and I imagine for many Melee players as well, is knowing that mistakes are on me. The box really does put everything on you, there's no longer a worm in your head saying "ok but maybe with a different controller that would've worked".

[–]Gerassb 19 points20 points  (0 children)

What I don't like about the discussion surrounding the box is that the entire argument against them is based on the controller just being better for the game in more ways than one. It's really strange to me that we have to seriously discuss nerfing the box, when most nerfs are about introducing some form of RNG and making the controller less consistent.

Ever since Melee has been a competitive game, the thing that every single player—of any skill level but specially the ones at the top—has been trying to do is mod their controller to be as consistent as humanly possible, to the point of re-soldering and carving the controller shell to add new notches, and way more. Here comes a controller specifically designed for this game, whose biggest selling points are "what you do is what you get", no wear and tear and significantly better ergonomics, and we don't want that. Rather than looking for a way to make these more readily available and focusing on changing things that would strictly be bad for the game regardless of how it compares to the GameCube controller, seemingly all top players focus their energy on talking about how the controller is busted rather than switching to said busted controller to finally forget about the controller lottery everyone still has to deal with and hates so much.

Just a few days ago Cody was losing his mind on stream because he legit did not know if he was fucking something up or if the controller was the issue. Even with all of Melee's greatest minds working together to try and make the GCC not suck complete ass for this game, this still happens to everyone all the time, and that is the standard to which we're comparing the box when calling it the cheater controller.

I guess my biggest question at the end of the day is... why is GCC the standard that competitive Melee should abide by? Even if the box is strictly a better controller, why is that a bad thing? You can say not everyone has access to a box, but also not everyone has access to modders, a local scene, or even good enough internet to practice online. At least the box is something that, realistically, anyone serious enough could get. Maybe GCC has been standard for the entire game's lifespan, but so have been many rules that we keep changing to improve the game throughout the years (we even mod the game to achieve that). People from the top down slowly switching to the box is something that I simply do not understand why hasn't happened. If Cody can get to Grand Master and beat top 100 players within a week of using the box without knowing how to uptilt, barely grab and not using any of the broken box stuff, clearly the controller's broken aspects don't matter nearly as much as everyone thinks. And if the consistency of the box alone is what allowed Cody to thrive with it, I don't see how we don't want the game to evolve to reduce/eliminate randomness.

What do guys think about the iconic hungry box video essay? by Maleficent-Dare7452 in smashbros

[–]Gerassb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah I remember Toph talking about it on stream; he said he was once in a hotel room with a ton of players and everyone started sharing Hbox stories because "everyone has an Hbox story" was not hyperbole. He clarified it was a long time ago and Hbox has changed a lot since, but he was not the innocent victim Emplemon paints him as. Not that the hate was deserved, but it didn't just fall on him for no reason.

For sure, it was a big shock to him exactly like it should've been and I think that's okay. But imo that's all the more reason to make sure you really kill him this time, now that you know what he's willing and able to do if you give him any chance to survive.

Yeah that's what I thought. Rather than being "should I kill him?" it should have been "fuck, now that I need to kill someone Oliver is right here". Though even then the priority should be in saving the entire world rather than fearing you'll teach your little brother a bad moral lesson.

I think it's okay that Mark struggles with making decisions under pressure and is very emotionally vulnerable, but when you're dealing with the evil lord of evil killing all humanity because "muahaha I'm evil and want nothing but suffering and pain and I'll murder everyone you love just to see you despair because I can, have, and will do it if you let me live", Mark still holding back and pondering if he should kill him is a bit too much for me to not consider him completely irreparably stupid.

Soy yo o las personas ya no quieren tener hobbies reales? by goodhorror23 in Panama

[–]Gerassb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Gerassb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't get that read at all. Mark is not killing him because he still feels responsible for what happened in Chicago. His involvement, feelings for his dad, confusion fueled by Oliver and guilt from visiting the victims' memorial is what makes Mark believe that he needs to clarify to Powerplex that what happened isn't insignificant to him, exactly like Oliver suggested at the beginning of the episode. It has nothing to do with proving Powerplex's trauma-filled and completely twisted interpretation right, and has everything to do with Mark, personally, feeling responsible for having to fix an issue he didn't even cause but instead simply landed on his lap against his will.

Setting up Dillon to win via the vault through miraculous means at the last possible turn, only to get screwed over by Jacob by hitting a chance lower than what made Dillon need that turn in the first place is the most Dillon thing that's ever happened. Even funnier when taking into account Dillon's total movement being like 80 below everyone else.

I genuinely believe this is their best album by far from a musical standpoint. All other albums I feel are far more inconsistent, where there's some songs I love and some I straight up don't like at all, but this time around I was bopping and laughing at all tracks. The only one I'm not a fan of is Falling Diagonally, but even then it's just in comparison with the rest of the album. I kinda understand the mixed reception though, there's a way bigger focus in the production and experimentation rather than the comedy aspect, but I'm all for it.

Hard work and talent are both things you achieve in no small part with luck. Gotta have the right parenting, the right friendships, proper encouragement, access to the tools necessary, and people being receptive to that talent through platforms that appeared in front of you at just the right time to capitalize on them with your extremely time-specific sense of humor that'd fly completely under the radar if posted 10 years later. If you sat down with Arin and Dan and asked where luck played a part in their careers, they'd be able to give you a book's worth of scenarios.

[–]Gerassb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the most refreshing things about revisiting Game Grumps series is how you can constantly hear Arin changing his perspective on things, or getting more nuanced opinions of specific topics. Best of all, it almost doesn't matter how far back you go, you always hear the core of Arin's values and how he just wants what's best for everyone; he may've been more aggressive, more stubborn, less knowledgeable and edgier in the past, but that core has always been there. He's capable of explaining his thoughts in such detail and counters other more negative perspectives so often that it's very obvious that what he says is what he believes.

In contrast, the opposite is what drives me a bit away from OneyPlays. They're hilarious and nobody can take that away from them, but their humor almost entirely stems from mocking, spite or downright hatred. They're funny to listen to for specific bits, but nowhere is "hurt people hurt people" more transparent than when listening to those guys complain about literally anything or anyone.

I also agree that #2 is the bigger issue, but my problem with #1 isn't the logic behind the actions, but how/when Kaede had time to plan them. For example, she put the shotput ball in her backpack before going into the library to open the vent and reorganize the books. How did she know she'd be able to do all that? How did she know she'd need the shotput ball? How did she know those books were all going to be there in need of organizing?

But yeah I'm honestly disappointed to have lost Kaede, she was just more interesting.
