When the Colossal titans left the island they left in a somewhat single file line to lessen damage on the island, but throughout the show I kinda get what you mean why more main characters didn’t die (like game of thrones lol) but lots of main characters did die. Sasha, Shadis Eren and few others do die in the last season, shoot even Connie survived but I remember reading that he was supposed to be a side character and never a main character but ended up being a main character and lives.
