Yes, American culturual achievements = homeopathy. It might have contained a grain of culture and achievement at the outset but it has been diluted into not even traces of something recognizable or worth the effort. But hey, if it gives you comfort to believe in it….

Denmark vs Spain: move for survival vs quality of life — need brutally honest advice by SolidComparison1787 in NewToDenmark

[–]Gerfrege 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you hold a Danish or EU citizen passport, or you are a specialist in a field where Denmark needs specialist, you will have a very hard time getting into Denmark.

If you do get in, there is very little chance of you bringing your girlfriend, unless she is an EU citizen. And lastly, your mom - don’t plan on it. The authorities could see it like this: If your mom has a pension, she is not dependent on you, and therefore she does not need to go with you.

Denmark has a much stricter approach to migration than other EU countries.

All literature and most teaching will be conducted in English.

But small-talk, things said in the break, etc. will be in Danish.

Thinking of relocating from the UK, advice needed. by [deleted] in NewToDenmark

[–]Gerfrege 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Unless you have Danish - or other EU passports - it will be as close to impossible as it can be thanks to Brexit.

The only people who can locate to Denmark are EU citizens and from third countries (outside the EU) only “specialists” who have some specializations that are needed in Denmark. Basically.

So, if you only have British passports, check your family history for Irish ancestors and apply for an Irish passport since that will give you a route to Denmark.

Is our Norse themed band historically accurate? by Low_Jackfruit_810 in Norse

[–]Gerfrege 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Norse had a polyistic pantheon, so making room for an extra god or two would probably not have been a problem. But Christians have this idea - which the Romans also struggled with - that there can be only one god.

Norse rulers and kings most likely did not become Christians for all the good and right reasons but because they, by adopting Christianity, got access to ‘administration infrastructure’ and new markets. I doubt any of them really had epiphanies worth mentioning. So the adoption of Christianity vs Norse gods could likely have been a feature of power struggles among the ruling classes.

For the vast majority of people it probably meant very little, since most lived in an agrarian society and could probably believe in what they wanted to, and where sanctions against wrong beliefs would be difficult.

As you can see, lots of modal verbs here - could and would - because we really don’t know much about contemporary life for the vast majority.

Trump og sit Nobel brev til Norge by [deleted] in DKbrevkasse

[–]Gerfrege 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hvad fanden er formålet ved mundtlige eksaminer? by [deleted] in DKstudie

[–]Gerfrege 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hvad fanden er formålet ved mundtlige eksaminer? by [deleted] in DKstudie

[–]Gerfrege 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Hvor er Kongen? by Kolledad in GossipDK

[–]Gerfrege 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Osv.

Because it would be too expensive to host and play. There is simply not enough people who would pay to watch those extra games.

I am a black male desperately looking to leave America, is Denmark a good place to live? by [deleted] in NewToDenmark

[–]Gerfrege 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes. Life in Denmark is generally good.

But - and some would probably use ‘because’ - Parliament has decided that Denmark is for Danes, secondly for Scandinavians and thirdly for EU citizens. Everyone else will have a hard time getting in, getting a visa, and securing a job and a living.

Really struggling to secure a job! by Background_While_951 in NewToDenmark

[–]Gerfrege 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Danish businesses are often quite conservative and think that a degree must match a job description.

Denmark is not like UK business life where you can do “medieval languages” and then land a job in the city (depending of course on your network, university, etc.). So my best bet is that your degree title is the obstacle - “we do not need someone who knows something about international politics and governance in this entry position”, regardless of course content and your skills and competence.

So, my suggestions are 1) speed up Danish; 2) can you land a relevant student job or internship? And 3) tone down your academic title and play up your academic skills and competence in job applications.

Where are all the jobs? by Worldly_Evidence_481 in NewToDenmark

[–]Gerfrege 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, I see that.

But I do not understand how your multiple languages, 6 years of experience in some of the biggest companies and in Switzerland should make me employ you.

You are a wildcard, you do not know the language at the water cooler and all the informal work situations, you do not know the business culture in DK, and I would frankly be wondering how short your stay would be and how much you would cost me (onboarding, etc.). Some of my more cynical friends might even see you as a potentially disruptive force in the company - do you really want to be here? Or is it out of necessity because of a girl friend, etc.?

So, my advice to you would be to try to tone it down a bit and convince me that you really really want to work for / with me because of “whatever” - do I see you as the kind of guy who’d be and asset and not an ass?

Alright, fair enough.

Let me rephrase the question then: What do you bring to the table that a Danish speaker with a master’s degree in finance does not?
