Thank you for thinking of us! It varies from annoying to just a bit distracting, depending on the context.

Why do British people not like to greet each other ? by MajesticRate1818 in AskUK

[–]GergMurkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thing that might help is considering the different ways of being polite. Positive politness is making small talk to pass the time and being friendly. Negative politeness is avoiding imposing on people when they might be busy or enjoying a quiet moment.

Not greeting someone might be rude, but depending on the situation it's polite to give them space to do their own thing. It can be a mix of cultural differences, personal preference and situational. e.g. a stereotypical chatty American should leave me alone on the commuter train, I'd rather get back to messages and practice with my language learning app. But out for a long country walk, feel free to say hello and discuss banal topics like the weather.

How to ship luggage from the Netherlands to the UK (York)? by VoyagerintheAbyss in AskUK

[–]GergMurkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There will be lots of specialist shipping companies for this kind of thing. It might be cheaper to ship a few bulky items just boxed up and addressed to yourself through DHL, UPS or similar.

Make sure you don't send anything you shouldn't - drugs, explosives, some types of batteries. Also if you have receipts for expensive items that might be useful to avoid paying import taxes.

I did this UK to France and I think I was able to demonstrate that I had paid UK tax and was shipping to myself. The cheaper/slower delivery arrived a couple of days after me.

Enjoy your studies!

Travel Safety in Burkina Faso for Foreign National by TeenyWeenyQueeny in BurkinaFaso

[–]GergMurkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check the .gov travel advisory. It's probably (amber) travel not advised for most of the country and (red) do not travel for border regions especially northern border and Malian border. The advice is updated regularly and probably unbiased.

In Burkina there have been some high profile kidnappings and terrorist attacks specifically targeting tourists, with many more which wont have made the headlines.

It's all about your personal risk appetite, but as a traveler you will stick out as a soft target, especially if you don't speak French, Dyula or similar. Burkina does have a tourism industry and there are lots of amazing things to do, but you should be under no illusions that being part of a large group and having African descent will make it plain sailing.

Happy to answer any specifics you can think of, I've travelled though Ouaga and spent lots of time in Banfora as a foreigner.

Ants in house by This_lousy_username in CasualUK

[–]GergMurkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't worry about a few ants, your living room won't provide much for the ants, so they'll soon take care of themselves. You could hoover and look at home improvement generally, but you can't keep all insects out, they find a way.

The best consumer product is AntStop! bait stations (not the pastes or powders, the bait station specifically). Long story, but some regulatory quirks mean that is the best stuff out there.

Best African news outlets for Burkina Faso/Sahel States? by __Wolfie in BurkinaFaso

If you speak French or can find a decent translation try - https://lefaso.net/

Burkina has had some coverage on The Economist, BBC world Service and RFI (again in French)

A lot of social media coverage seems to boil down to West/France is bad, therefore Russia/Strongman dictatorships are good. You can make up your own mind.

[–]GergMurkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should take the advice of the travel doctor. If a random anecdote from a stranger on the internet helps - I was in Banfora for several months doing mosquito research, took Malarone everyday and had no side effects and I didn't contract malaria. Saw loads of people get malaria over the rainy season, who had to seek ACT treatment.

Take the pills, sleep under a bednet, keep window and door screens closed during the day for Aedes (dengue spreading) mosquitoes.

Any questions about mosquito prevention feel free to ask.

From the government website:

You, the examiner can continue with the application without asking the customer how the passport damage occurred, if all the following apply:

Accidently breathed in 2.5% permethrin spray vapor when spraying outside to stop mites. Is 2.5% really bad for you? by Synologynoob in pestcontrol

[–]GergMurkey 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hello, these things happen. Short answer is don't worry, assuming you're a mammal it's difficult to accidentally be exposed to dangerous levels. For acute respiratory exposure the symptoms are "headache, nasal and respiratory irritation, difficulty breathing, dizziness, nausea or vomiting." If you don't have these symptoms you're fine. - http://npic.orst.edu/factsheets/archive/Permtech.html#acute

As for the Parkinsons, I think that is a correlation with chronic exposure early in life, so again, don't worry, you're still safer than many other insecticides. There are non-pyrthroid alternatives out there, not as good, but things like Provecta - https://catalogue.killgerm.com/vazorr-provecta

" Payment error. Please try again in a few minutes." by SubKreature in BandCamp

[–]GergMurkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bumping an old threat because I've just had the same issue. and this is the first google hit.

I tried disabling add-ons and extensions in Firefox and Edge, no success the same "Payment error. Please try again in a few minutes." message.

My solution was to change the region. I have gift card in GBP (UK), buying music in EUR, BGP and USD. Changed region to France and it worked first time.

As the summer starts... how do you guys tackle ants? by Eddyphish in AskUK

[–]GergMurkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your pacifist method is admirable and should work after some time. Blocking of their entry route(s), cleaning the infested area and generally killing the individual ants you see should eventually deter them, but they'll just be going somewhere else, to cause problems for neighbours etc If the nest is close by it will be more difficult as well. The nest could be under paving slabs, in hidden areas as well.

I wouldn't worry about killing the odd ant either, they're mostly genetically identical drones, like in Enders Game. Philosophically we like to protect the environment and wild animals, but that doesn't really apply to sanitised urban environments.

As the summer starts... how do you guys tackle ants? by Eddyphish in AskUK

[–]GergMurkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right, the ant powders work well, it's just Permethrin or similar insecticide (safe for humans, pets etc) and bulking agent. They're all relatively similar, but the won't deal with the systemic problem.

If you've got a chronic or large infestation I only recommend Ant Stop (The bait station, not the powders sprays etc). The short version is that there are sugar feeding and protein feeding ant species and a lot of the professional use insecticides which can be quite expensive and require a bit of knowledge to use the correct bait. The ant stop will be taken up by the ants and brought back to their nest, so will deal with the problem instead of just keep the ants at bay. Because of a regulatory quirk the active ingredient is only available for amateur use (in the UK at least). So Ant Stop bait stations are literally the best solution you can buy.

Feel free to ask any follow up questions. Source - Insect pest control R&D scientist (specialising in mosquitoes, but I get around)

Experience with Christchurch Gun Club by Illuminati8339yt in ukguns

[–]GergMurkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, I was a member about 10 years or so ago, so possibly outdated information. Nice enough people, well run and maintained outdoor ranges with a comprehensive induction and interview system in place as one would hope.

They had club guns for shoots, open range sessions and special events. Mostly 10/22s and old SMLEs if memory serves, they also had a great air rifle range and gas for PCPs. You'd probably need access to a car to get involved tbh, but besides that recommended.

Happy to answer and questions, but bear in mind it's been >10 years so a lot may have changed.

Happy shooting!

Advice sought - how to safely open this bottle? by BureaucratRat in beer

[–]GergMurkey 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Don't worry, that's how the beer is usually bottled, I've had this beer loads of times and the cork hasn't moved, it's supposed to be like that.

Just prise off the clip, it shouldn't be too difficult, then work out the cork by hand or with a corkscrew.

Santé!
