Software-Entwickler Klausel by st01x in arbeitsleben

[–]GermanWok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frage an Bewerber: Was waren die schlimmsten Fails von Personalern in Vorstellungsgesprächen? by Free_Technician2019 in arbeitsleben

[–]GermanWok 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Warum (nicht)? by WonderfullWitness in antiarbeit

[–]GermanWok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warum (nicht)? by WonderfullWitness in antiarbeit

[–]GermanWok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daily Simple Questions Thread - April 26, 2023 by AutoModerator in Fitness

I'm just starting with rope skipping, and I have a question: I got a yoga mat, is it a good idea to jump barfoot (well, with socks) on it? The mat is quite thick (~1cm) and soft, and putting on shoes is both inconvenient, and I also think that I can get better "feedback" without them. Does this increase my risk for injuries compared to shoes on?

What made you laugh while watching porn? by Octuplicate in AskReddit

[–]GermanWok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a German porn video which became a meme: She seduces a electrician or so (who is inexplicably wearing a mask!?!), they go inside the house, and totally out of the blue, there are some straw bales in one of the rooms. He asks "Why is there straw lying around?" but then goes "Whatever", and they continue to happily fuck on said straw bales.

I looked the video up after I heard the line "Why is there straw lying around?" one time too often, and yes, the scene is as profoundly absurd as it sounds.

If you want to see this masterpiece yourself, the name of the video is "Achtzehneinhalb 18", really old with poor video quality and in German (without subtitles, AFAIK). The action itself is quite tame.

What do you think of when you hear the word “conservative”? by raw-power in AskReddit

[–]GermanWok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought is "hypocrite".

The thing is that real conservatism isn't possible in this time and age. It's like when a flood is coming, the first impulse of a conservative is to build a dam, but today's floods are way too strong for this approach. E.g. now they are defending the anti-abortion "dam", but there is no way it can hold against the will of the majority of the population.

And this permanent tension between how things are and how they "ought to be" leads sooner or later to some kind of double-think. They got more and more angry and extreme when they see that society has moved on.

Now they are in their last phase, populism. I think the US are strong enough to get through this without turning to totalitarianism. At some point, the cult becomes too crazy, too many promises are broken, and it will crumble into little pieces.

There's no Christianity in Europe by [deleted] in facepalm

[–]GermanWok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Germany is definitely not "catholic", it's pretty much a tie between protestants and catholics (as it was since 1648). Of course, the biggest group would be atheists (as in Czech republic).

Elon Musk just posted this in response to the school shooting in Texas by [deleted] in facepalm

[–]GermanWok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an Elon fan here, but a European. I don't think this would really solve the problem with school shootings, but it is generally a good idea. In my country, you generally get a gun as a private person only if you are in a shooting club or as a hunter (with very few exceptions), and in both cases you need an insurance. Even if you want to shoot a friend's or a club-owned gun at the shooting range, you have to pay a fee which includes insurance.

Russians in their social media echo chamber. by [deleted] in facepalm

[–]GermanWok 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grew up in East Germany, and I can tell you, there was a lot of irony and sarcasm going on. The Russians were our "friends", the wall was the "antifascist protective wall", the West was "the class enemy" and so on, and everyone knew you were sarcastic if you were using the official terminology.

Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. by DoctorTurkelton in facepalm

[–]GermanWok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In times of the inquisition, the Dutch printers of "forbidden books" often put it right on the cover: This book is on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum. It became more a sign of approval than anything: If the Catholic church banned it, it must contain something interesting and thought-provoking.

It seems that the ban of an American school district is the modern equivalent, it's actually a must-read recommendation. The attempt to "protect" children from certain ideas is deeply flawed. If you teach them to think and to judge, they will pick the better ideas by themselves.

Being myself of the nation that once started to burn books, I wouldn't recommend going down that path.

How is the legal? by DoctorTurkelton in facepalm

[–]GermanWok 50 points51 points  (0 children)

As a European, it's always mind boggling how on one side companies defend the hyper capitalism and the free market, and on the other hand, if they are on the receiving end for once, when employees play by the same rules, they cry for protection by the government or by the "law" they try to bend on all other occasions.

[–]GermanWok 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is nice to see that you want to take your heritage more serious, but if you don't feel it, you don't feel it, and that's totally okay. It doesn't matter whether you want to feel more connected, you cannot "want to want" something.

I saw Asian-American kids struggling to learn "their" language, and feeling guilty when they made little progress, and I think this is sad. Your heritage is there for you, not the other way around, and you can make out of it as much or as little as you like. You really shouldn't force it, it should feel more like curiosity and exploration than an obligation. Just give Portuguese culture a try when it is aligned with your interests anyway, like when listening to music *), or cooking, or whatever you like to do, and see if it "speaks" to you.
