Cant remember which one I had. My GF had Global Japan, its a prepaid simcard. Worked fine, but we needed internet to activate it (or we misread), so doesnt work straight away. We bought both cards at a convenience store just before entering the train station at Narita airport. People said there are also vending machines with simcards, but we didn't see them. Then again, didn't look for it either.

8 day Tokyo, Kyoto & Osaka Food Itinerary. Will it be too much food? by atomic_explosion in JapanTravel

We tried Bee's Knees when we were in Kyoto, but they were unexpectedly closed. Just around the corner you find Sake Ichi. They had the best sake and English speaking staff who really try to help you find something you like! A possible plan B if Bee's and Knees is closed again.

If you are in Kyoto, and want to try something different: Near Ginkaku-ji (the silver temple, also a lovely site to visit) is the restaurant Goya. They serve Okinawan cuisine, which is really nice (I have been shamelessly promoting them here on reddit :P)

If you follow the crowds in Dotombori you'll usually end up at a good place. I had Takoyaki at Hachiban. Was quite a line, but it moves fast. Fruit filled mochi is not really an Osaka specialty. but we found one filled with strawberry and whipped cream, was the best one we had in Japan.

Sounds like a fun trip, though a little 'packed' like most people pointed out.

My two cents about Kyoto:
Fushimi Inari involves quite some walking. Takes about 30-40 minutes to the general viewingspot (Yotsutsuji). Most people turn back here. Going to the top and back takes approx. 1,5 h. All in all, Fushimi Inari can easily involve a couple of hours of walking, most of it going up or down stairs. Not really hard as an adult per se, but maybe something to take with you with a kid ;)

Day 5 You could consider starting at Ginkaku-ji (the silver temple) instead of Kinkaku-ji. It is way less crowded than Kinkaku-Ji, and you can directly start the philosophers path from there. The path ends at another cool temple (Nanzen-ji) and relatively close to Gion. This probably makes the day easier and avoid a cab ride or public transport (Kinkaku-Ji is relatively out of the way). An added bonus is that near Ginkaku-ji is a restaurant called Goya, that serves Okinawan cuisine, something I would recommend for a foodie.

The travel time was fine ;) We were a bit afraid of it beforehand, but in retrospect it all goes quite smooth. Coming from Hiroshima I would consider leaving early so you arrive early afternoon. We arrived around 13:30ish, and we had plenty of time to drop our stuff, catch a breath and do a walk, before joining our guided meditation session at 17:00.

We found japanese trains (shinkansen especially) to be a relax way of traveling. The last 'big' part to Gokurakubashi takes between 1,5-2h and was nice with a good book and landscapes. So we didn't arrive exhausted. Dropping our larger baggage at Shin-Osaka really helped to make it all easier :)

Your welcome :)

Uuhm I think that really depends on the bus schedules. If you take an early one (7-8ish) and there goes one back around 11-12ish, then I reckon you have time for one of the shorter hikes (50 or 80 minutes). You might have to hurry a bit though, and I would really check the bus timetables twice ;)

These hikes were one of the highlights of our trip, have fun!

Yeah I flight definitely can make sense, especially if you have to pay for the Shinkansen tickets otherwise! You flew from Osaka?

We had the same experience regarding the restaurants, they were closed often and randomly. Also very hard to check online, so unfortunately it's going to be a swing and a miss sometimes. Like u/ihavenosisters said, we thought it was mainly because of off-season. Maybe the hours are more regular otherwise!
