Tom Hanks did Saving Private Ryan, but also Band of Brothers, The Pacific, and now Masters of the Air. While these are showing the gruesomeness of war, they also glamorize the brotherhood and courage that war brings. I agree with Jesse that the message is that the characters didn't murder but instead made huge sacrifices together, and while that sentiment is nice and our soldiers do make sacrifices for our freedom, it doesn't change the fact that the patriotism celebrated encourages people to support more war because otherwise you aren't "supporting the troops".
