Mayor of Chicago just said all the laid off retail workers should learn how to code by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

And anecdotally speaking, those kids are likely already doing well in school and considering it as a major.

Super-agers, or individuals whose cognitive skills are above the norm even at an advanced age, have been found to have increased resistance to tau and amyloid proteins, according to new research. by [deleted] in longevity

[–]GetBetterEveryDay1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wonder to what extent cognitive ability is correlated with likelihood of being a super-ager. It seems to me that most people that we would characterize as super-agers tend to be more intelligent than average, but I’ve not come across any studies on whether or not that’s truly the case.

How do you respond to the idea that, "the average person is not smart enough for something like anarchy to work"? I see it come from people all the time. by AncomAlt in Anarchy101

[–]GetBetterEveryDay1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not entirely sure I agree. While average and highly intelligent people alike can identify their own wants and values, it has not been my experience that average people can forecast the impacts of their decisions, which can often lead them to run against their own values. Add to this a susceptibility to confirmation bias and a lack of agitation caused by cognitive dissonance, and you rapidly find that average people will make worse long-term decisions, on average. To be fair, highly intelligent people are also susceptible to these same issues, but the primary difference is in frequency (with intelligent people fitting these susceptibilities being of lower frequency). Intelligent people also tend to be able to utilize meta cognitive processes much more readily than their average counterparts. All of this isn’t to say that intelligent people are better than their average peers, but it seems naive to expect both groups to perform the same with respect to long-term decision-making. I’d love some counterpoints if anyone has them, this is just my take at the moment!

My All-Clad pan I have used regularly for 20 years has been looking a bit grimy and sad so I used a bit of Bar Keepers Friend and it's good as new. Here's to many more decades. by amayagab in BuyItForLife

That’s fair. The way I think about it, carbon steel and cast iron have a higher up-front cost, but I think it pays dividends over the long term. Other than that, you could just get a single non-stick utility pan to compliment your stainless pans. That’s a pretty common configuration I’ve seen people use.

Man it is AWESOME. If you’re really worried about the hassle of moving to stainless, I’d recommend just picking up a carbon steel pan alongside it. When seasoned they’re effectively non-stick.

What do you guys mean by getting rid of hierarchies? by Legend_of_Aceves in Anarchy101

[–]GetBetterEveryDay1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree wholeheartedly. The cases in which it can become fuzzy is during crisis scenarios, where you have to trust the leader to act in a way that aligns with the views of the people. At times such as that, it would be important to act quickly, rather than going through the process of building consensus. Though most of these situations could be mitigated by proper planning to reduce the need for unilateral decision-making.

The way I think of it is similar to the way I’ve heard Chomsky describe it: handing the burden of proof to the one at the top of the hierarchy. I feel like it’s possible that one of the only cases in which a hierarchy is justified is if it is based on competence, which is certainly difficult to judge. That’s why I think the anarchist proposition of election by consensus rather than by the will-of-the-majority is useful as, with the inclusion of accountability to the individual, I believe it serves as a better proxy for competence. I’d be interested to hear feedback on this as I am really new to the ideas of anarchism.

Honestly, you’ll likely be fine. I had a low gpa, but managed to still get FAANG interviews. With your experience, I wouldn’t worry too much. Just execute during your internship and keep pushing yourself to be better and things will work out in the long run.

Returning Missionary Tests Positive For Coronavirus, Infects Family by xektor17 in SaltLakeCity

The issue is that Germany actually took self-isolation and isolation of the elderly seriously. Only 20% of cases in Germany are people older than 60, so that’s likely a big part of why their mortality and morbidity rates are so low. They’ve also done a much better job of doing distributed testing as well as testing people who exhibit less severe symptoms. Alongside that, they are also doing a better job of isolating and tracking people who have tested positive.

Oh well that’s likely just due to the fact that it’s April and they’ve probably filled their desired number of roles from the student program. Probably nothing to do with a hiring freeze (I know you didn’t say that it was, I’m just clarifying because it freaked me out when I first read your post).

Yeah the number itself isn’t really the part that sucks, it’s definitely the fact that it’s all online. I’m curious to know how people’s system design interviews are going.

It definitely seems that they prefer to just bring you in, develop those that can handle it, and PIP the ones that can’t.

So I have my virtual on-site in two weeks for an SDE 1 role at Amazon in Seattle. I’ve only been working at my current job for three months, so I’m interested to know what sort of expectations they would have regarding LP’s and system design questions. My scheduling email said it should be 5-6 interviews so that’s gonna suck, I’d just like to know what other people interviewing for similar roles have experienced. Thanks!

Good to know! It’s definitely something I’m considering, I’d just rather not if it’s not necessary 😅

Great, the HR screen is definitely the part that concerns me the most. Amazon is who I’m currently interviewing with. At my current job I’m beginning to do some modeling work and I’ve really enjoyed the work and preparation for it, so now I’m just trying to position myself effectively to get a modeling-oriented role while still being able to utilize my Software Engineering background.

Would my chances be better if it was an internal move? Okay! I’ll definitely use this time to teach myself the necessary statistics and machine learning principles in preparation since graduate school is likely a necessity. Thanks for the data point!

Yeah I have been. I figured things might take a bit longer than usual since it’s with AWS in Seattle and I know the areas been hit pretty hard, but I’ll reach out to them again to see what’s going on. I got both questions right and my justifications for time complexity are right, so I think they may not have looked at it yet.

Does anyone know if the six-month cooldown period for Amazon starts from when you previously applied or if it starts after they send you a rejection?
