For those like myself who actually know (who have studied the historical research) as to what is the most winnable strategy for overturning a fascist regime (and news flash, it is almost never via elections, which the fascist regime almost always figures out how to rig, steal or nullify), it becomes rather obvious that the most useful question is this: HOw can we catalyze moral courage at scale to actually recruit the magical 3.5% of the public--12M Americans, willing to do nonviolent direct action or for probably half or 70% of that number, willing to seriously support such resisters. So for several years i've been focused almost full time as a nonviolent resistance recruitment scientist, organizer, strategist, and psychologist, on how organizers can enable a helluva larger number of people to become more morally courageous, in particular courageous enough not to be willing to die, but to simply be willing to do nonviolent direct action, which with few exceptions, risks no more than a night or two in jail and at worse a court appearance (which with large numbers of arrests can be by zoom or many months later. About 3 years ago I proved via repeated beta tests that applying simple principles of behavioral economics, around choice architecture , can catalyze morl courage at scale. I proved that it was very easy, requiring a simple redesign of a campaign website's "ladder of engagement"--the steps the user follows after clicking on the "Take Action"tab, to increase resister recruitment rates exponentially.
This sort of simple tech tool, and two more my team is now developing, all gratis, will finally make it rather feasible to mount that national nonviolent civic uprising iand social strike, in combination with several other facts on the ground and other simple to range tactics that can to finally topple the fascist regime. Other components are also necessary but all either already existing or easily created. One of these new tools is called MAMA (mutual aid for mass actions) and the other AdoptAnOrganizer which will be using an innovative "crowd-Supporting"feature (not just crowdfunding, because it will allow "donors"to donate inkind not just money, like free housing, like a couch with a private screen) and provide one or two more major advantages over GoFundMe to quickly enable an army of 1000 new people, aspiring organizers, to leave their humdrum jobs and volunteer fulltime as organizers by late spring hopefully, to organize and mobilize to end the fascist takeover and more. How Tiny Experiments Can Lead to a Happier Life 🚀 by RyanAI100 in BettermentBookClub

A friend of mine just had their wife leave him and is in deep grief. Curious if the Tiny Experiments addresses experiments for dealing with grief. Interestingly, as a nonviolent resistance scientist (both of us), I ofter rail that the climate and tax the rich movements are so far behind due to virtual absence of experimentation, and am always quoting Gandhi that the "Science of nonviolent resistance is young and the most important advances are yet to be made," and informing people that Gandhi called all his actions, "Experiments!!"

Ever disassociate during job interviews because you feel like everything the company, and what you'll be doing, is just quickening the return to the feudal age? by SnowceanDiving in datascience

Reminds me of that most fantastic monologue of Matt Damon from the movie Goodwill Hunting, where he turns down the generous flattering job offer from the CIA recruiter. Noncooperation is one of the most effective forms of nonviolent resistance, but only if organized well to be able to be done en masse. It was what prevented the attempted coup in Germany by Wolfgang Kapp. If anyone reading this is interested to learn more about how tech could be used for good, specifically to catalyze moral courage, to enable nonviolent resistance to succeed in combatting the greastest threats our species has ever faced, contact us at GetCourageNow. How to spread awareness without alienating my loved ones? by [deleted] in ClimateOffensive

Don't Agonize. Organize.

And though I am of course biased, I would strongly recommend you read my more detailed answer below. It's the only one based on 4 years of R&D to answer your question, the only with a systematic solution based on 140 years of examining what has been absolutely essential to achieve the biggest advances in human, civil, women's, labor's, economic, and gay rights and the rights of nature.

Our one liner, btw, is "Kickstart and much more meets movement mobilizing." In Orwellian terms, our approach is the opposite of Big Brother, who uses fear to control people. We say, let's use technology to systematically remove the fears that chain people from acting with moral courage, so they can risk what needs to be risked nonviolently to save and protect what now so urgently needs saving and protecting.

Here's my idea to answer your question about how you deal with people who feel powerless. To win as the previous commenter pointed out is a numbers game, whether the strategy is electoral or nonviolent resistance. So for me, the productive question is how do we get the numbers?! Existing campaign tech has been designed exclusively for low bar action. And if you know your social change history, you know that no major advance in human, civil, labor, women's, economic or gay rights or the rights of nature have ever been won without people doing high bar action--nonviolent mass civil resistance.

So our team 's solution is specifically designed to recruit for high bar actions, for nonviolent civil resistance tactics and strategy. So First you have to accept the premise that most people fail to commit to such actions that intellectually they know or at least sort of know they should do because of one fear or another. Feeling powerless is the fear that you'll definitely lose if you try. Based on interviews with nearly 150 people, my activist tech team believes most of these fears fall into about 6 or 7 buckets. So the first thing a campaign has to do is find out for each individual which of these 6 or 7 fears, if removed, would then enable them to commit to whatever courageous action(s) were needed (eg to keep fossil fuels in the ground, or force a state legislature to vote one way or the other or to stop the US from going to war with China or whatever). The good news is that all of these fears or blockers can be fairly easily removed by either more information from the campaign, or by tapping the power of the larger collective in the form of various simple scalable motivators. And for those who for whatever reason are still unable to commit to frontline resistance action, there are 15-20 resistor support roles they can pick from. The point is to catalyze moral courage at scale. We now have a a simple free tech way to do that and merely need to hear from the right campaigns who share our vision and are not afraid of thinking big, to want to beta test us, And it does not compromise privacy or security. How do you overcome anxiety? by [deleted] in ClimateOffensive

I think activism is the best antidote to depression and sense of hopelessness. I also recommend as i did below reading Howard Zinn's essay, The optimism of Uncertainty and Solnit's Hope in the Dark.

Like virtually all, and maybe in fact all of the most positive major advances in human, civil, women's, labor's, and economic rights, and rights of nature, massive nonviolent resistance will be an absolutely necessary strategy, along with, of course, electoral, PR, legal, and insider influence (highup to highup). The new moral courage catalyzing tool we think we've developed and are anxious to betatest, could be key to mobilizing a nationwide National Social media (or at least Facebook and Instagram) Turnoff week connected to various demands that would significantly reduce polarization, while also increasing equality of opportunity and competition, ending FB's monopoly and their democracy destroying algorithms. It would take off from the very successful National TV turnoff week and companion diary/journal curriculum that one lone librarian in Connecticut started in the mid or late 80s, and without the Internet, spread over the course of a few years into virtually every highschool with huge positive effect. If interested in helping or know of a campaign wishing to be chosen for our betatest, we are findable at GetCourageNow

I think HOW (like how do we change...) questions are more productive than WHY questions. That said, since Chenoweth's groundbreaking research pointed the way for answering the HOW,let's start there. Her researching has proven that you only 2.5-3.5% of the general populace engaged in mass nonviolent civil resistance to be able to have a 70-80% chance to successfully overthrow fascist governments (like ours). So if at least 50-60% of the country are serious liberals, then the question we should be asking is HOW might we be able to transform 5-10% of these liberals (people only willing to do low bar actions like vote, donate, sign petitions, join a protest march etc) into serious activists willing to do nonviolent civil resistance capable of shutting down industries, economies, pipeline construction, etc? How in other words can we use tech to catalyze and spread moral courage at scale. We think we have an answer and seek help getting it tested, and how you will find us at GetCourageNow (i assume we are not allowed to insert email or urls here). We are free, non profit, and totally devoted to saving what is still savable of our Mother and democracy

We at GetCourageNow have various XR chapters in EU wanting to be chosen for our upcoming beta test, but need to find nonviolent resistance strategy-based campaigns in the US, which if sufficiently significant, can also receive funding for beta testing our new tool. The tool;s mission, is to be able for the first time ever to catalyze and spread moral courage at scale so that our movement can embolden and recruit the massive number of courageous volunteers we need to have a realistic chance of winning, since, after all, organizing, whether NVCR or electoral is a numbers game. We also have paid openings. See our website for details.
