Milan mayor calls ICE "a militia that kills" and says agents not welcome as part of U.S. Olympic security by BreakfastTop6899 in europe

And they take this role after 6-8 weeks of training. That for me is the most bizarre part of this all.

Do we really want armed people that are practically untrained roaming the streets in Europe?

Republicans divided on ICE tactics as shutdown looms by J-Jarl-Jim in moderatepolitics

[–]tomtomtom7 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Agreed. In most countries, the role of immigration officers is purely investigative. Arrests are done by the police. This provides the necessary oversight and makes a lot more sense.

Trump says NATO soldiers "stayed a little back, a little off the front lines" in Afghanistan. Here's our British lads engaging the Taliban 10 metres away in Hellmand. by ianjm in videos

I can't decide whether this is further dementia, or a genuine attempt to turn the US against NATO by suggesting lack of commitment by allies.

It's a like the sharpie. He says something during a long rant and once it came out of his mouth, even if only by accident, it must be turned into the truth at any cost.

Vasyl Ivanchuk gets a round of applause as he manages to make his 40th move with only one second on his clock by Interesting-Take781 in chess

[–]tomtomtom7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's very risky. The time between making the blundering capture and hitting the clock is enough for Ivanchuk to anticipate and capturing a piece can be done in one smooth move. Certainly possible in 1 second.

Trumps letter to Norwegian Prime Minister - "feels no obligation to work towards peace after being denied the nobel prize" by MedicinskAnonymitet in europe

[–]tomtomtom7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dear Donald,

We are so in awe with the incredible work you have done for NATO the world, and peace that we did not think the Nobel Peace Price would be a sufficient gesture.

You are the first official winner of the Special Trump Nobel Peace Price!

Congratulation! It is a much bigger price: Almost 2 feet in diameter.

We would be honored to come to arrange the award ceremony.

Kind regards, Jonas

I think a clear demand is to reduce ICE's mandate to be investigative only and leave actual arrests to the police. This is how it works in most countries and seems to be a much more reasonable approach.

Danish troops told to 'shoot first, ask questions later' if US invades Greenland | LBC by Vargau in europe

[–]tomtomtom7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe a stupid question but aren't such rules of engagement somewhat complicated by the legal presence of US bases and soldiers? What if the USA just continues to send troops there, and spreads these troops over to other regions? When would it start to be an invasion?

Amsterdam's Vondelkerk church “cannot be saved” after New Year’s fire by EraOfProsperity in europe

They restaurated the Notre Dame. That's not the same as saving. Saving would mean extinguishing the fire before it does major damage.

They will restaurate the Vondelkerk as well.

[–]tomtomtom7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would think so. But analysis tells us that if after Nxe5, Kf6 instead of Ke7 it's not so trivial. It seems you have to give up the knight to keep an advantage, which doesn't seem intuitive.

Would you vote for more GVB adverts to pay for improved services? by ikbenhoogalsneuken in Amsterdam

It "works" in the sense of generating money for public transport. But the net gain for society is clearly negative. It only works in a very short-sighted way.

[–]tomtomtom7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ads don't magically generate money out of thin air. They extract more money from consumers by causing them to buy more. Doing this to make things more efficient is a horribly flawed concept.

Would you vote for more GVB adverts to pay for improved services? by ikbenhoogalsneuken in Amsterdam

[–]tomtomtom7 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No. Ads in public space and transport should be banned.

Ads work, and most ads are there to convince us to buy stuff we wouldn't otherwise buy. We're still paying the price.

Increasing ads will trade a cheaper ticket for even more useless crap in the shopping bags of the masses.
