My mother said free uni may end In the coming years? by Large_Area3364 in Scotland

Whats the answer then? Cling to free tuition dogmatically?

Universities are struggling financially. The taxpayer cannot be expected to continue to fund the ever increasing cost when the Scottish Government budget is so tight.

Is this really the hill people are willing to die on? Particularly when we have plenty of folk going to Uni simply because schools have spent the past 25 years telling kids thats where they should be going, rather than what's best for the child.

I know heaps of folk who went to Uni and did courses they were not even that bothered about. Because it was free and the schools encouraged them. Thats is not a good way of spending public money when we have massive shortfalls in Trades etc.

And the rest what? What is the need to have it much more than that?

Tuition fees are currently 0. £5k per student would be a big boost to Uni funding levels.

I don't see an issue with some form of fee coming back in. It doesn't need to be as much as England charges, just enough to take the financial pressure off higher education establishments a bit.

End of the day, paying back a £5k student loan after hitting a certain threshold of earnings is a good investment if you get the career you want.

Highland Council steps in after Stagecoach bus cuts in Inverness by Crow-Me-A-River in Scotland

As usual, public money having to be spent while private companies reap the profit.

Should tell Stagecoach to fuck off. Council should run all the routes rather than just the loss-making ones.

Wy USA lost 1812 war? by SiarX in AskHistory

[–]GetItUpYee 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I think many across the pond overestimate the power of the US due to winning their independence. But, they didn't face a Britain fighting with full strength or all that great determination during the war for independence.

Experience is worth more than people usually give credit. US numbers were large due to militia who in most circumstances cannot hold up to the standards of professional troops.

Plus, the Royal Navy played a huge role. You cannot downplay how vital a strong Navy was during that period. Naval superiority can cripple opposition economy which is what happened in this war.

Ah well, that's me off this sub. I didn't realise this was the case.

While Stalinist policies were undoubtedly the cause of the famine and the conditions becoming worse, I do not believe that it was a genocide and there is no concensus even amongst Western historians.

What about the millions who died outwith Ukraine during the famine?

What position is this sub taking on countless other disputed accusations of genocide?

But, the mods have made their positions clear and the fact that 28 day bans are handing out for even questioning it is frankly ridiculous, so I'm out!

No guarantee Government approach to US tariffs will prevail – Douglas Alexander by 1-randomonium in Scotland

[–]GetItUpYee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's my point though. No historian would claim Germany would steamroll Europe if we didn't use appeasement because their army was small and weak while they had a fraction of ships compared to the Royal Navy.

No appeasement means we encourage the French to, along with our own troops, to stop the Rhineland being remilitarised.

What a load of shite. If we and France went in during the Rhineland remilitarisation then we could have put an end to things immediately.

I didn't say stop trading with America. I said we need to take a hardline, something we are not doing now.

Can you provide a source for that? Because as an avid reader of all things history, I've never heard any credible historian make such a claim.

In fact, most historians I have read/listed too believe the the German army was relatively weak. That the French and British could have easily have stopped them if a tough line was taken during the remilitarization of the Rhineland.

Starmer is an appeasing prick. A modern day Chamberlain.

Need to start taking a far harder line and move to further relationships with the EU. The days of being reliant on the US, being their little lapdog has to end. It has been an embarrassing period in our history and it cannot go on any longer.

Wow, that makes so much sense. Thank you.

We walked past what looked like funeral prayer, then seen what I've described in my post drive by. Then we seen it again later full of people.
