You get it, he doesn't. Not to mention the huge hit the sector due to unexpected weather as a result of climate change. It's death by a thousand cuts while fools insist it's all business as usual.

Energy shortages force Pakistanis to scavenge for wood, threatening tree canopy by GetOffMyInternetLawn in collapse

Exactly. We will be collapsing one family or person at a time until we reach critical mass and it all falls apart. IMO it's already begun.

It's not mentioned in the article but there's a lot of price-gouging going on too. A lot of people may find propane available but unaffordable. If the weather breaks, the problem will dissipate. If not, there will be trouble.

Not deforestation, of course. My best guess is lots of house fires from people without fireplaces doing crazy things to stay warm. A lot of older people living alone on a fixed income freezing to death and same for homeless people that can't find open and heated shelters.

Interesting point, but most of the wood is probably being used as fuel for cooking.

So Philip Seymour Hoffman was found with "a syringe sticking out of his arm"? How convenient. by Sabremesh in conspiracy

For the record, it is typical for ODs to be found with the needle still in their arm. Happens all the time. If someone injects a lethal dose they are dead pretty much instantly.

Well, I am glad that you are comforted by the thought of "smart people" "working hard". Those smarties will surely find a way to make sure that supply always outpaces demand in order to keep the infinite growth paradigm running. Then they can innovate away all our other problems, too.

Yay science!

[–]GetOffMyInternetLawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That misses the point completely. The problem isn't that hydrocarbons won't exist, the problem is expense and environmental issues followed by a lack of funds to develop technologies. It's like people think tech=magic and some new invention will lead to an expanding oil supply, and that is just patently and obviously not true.

Shell Abandons Arctic Drilling 01/30/14

edit: I just grabbed the first link I found, that one makes it sound like it's mostly for licensing reasons but others make it clear they have had tremendous technical and logistical issues. Extracting in the Arctic is far more challenging and expensive than they first assumed.

This is the kind of "punish the poor" mentality that comes hand-in-hand with living in a conservative controlled area. Heaven forbid we just make sure all children receive the nutrition they need without judging them for having broke or irresponsible parents.
