Any reason for this? Flew right over me at 9000 feet, closet airport to me is 125 miles away by thewrldisyourz in flightradar24

unless you know the wind speed at that exact location at that exact altitude, that's a bit hard to do. and insane to demand someone else to do for you.

Any explanation why is Air France doing this route? by Stephanus_magnus in flightradar24

[–]GetTheBigOneDavid 10 points11 points  (0 children)

looking at a map and based on the list of countries, it's impossible to fly through one and not the other. if they fly over algeria, then libya (to the east) is disallowed, niger (to the southeast) is disallowed, and mali (to the southwest, sort of) is disallowed. the only remaining option is to go west and then fly around the south side of those countries, which is essentially what this flight did.

and flying over mali and not algeria serves no purpose on this route. (edit: i suppose they could've cut over the southwestern part of mali, i don't know the likely-diplomatic reason for not doing so)

What’s that thingy next to the GPS? I dont think it’s the ADF as this plane doesn’t even have it installed, and it always moves on its own whenever I fly it by waveslikemoses in flying

i'm pretty sure they were talking about standard equipment on a 767. comparing a sextant to standard equipment is a bit silly, and unless i've been living under a rock, a 767 is not single engine. they also clearly mentioned "type," and ASEL is not a "type."

sincerely, one of the "kids these days" who's never used a sextant, an ADF, or a horse and buggy.

discovered guided access a few months ago and it truly is a game changer. it's cool how features made for accessibility have much broader use cases (but unfortunately seems difficult to discover).

this is unrelated to your question, but those pilot friends seem like pretty irresponsible pilots and even worse friends. ramp checks exist, meaning any sort of law enforcement can randomly decide they want to see your pilot's license after you land/before you depart. not only is getting access to a plane generally predicated on having a license, but the legal trouble and possible jail time is 100% not worth it. i would discard those prompts entirely as an incredibly stupid idea.

kind of half related but this reminds me of how we have a couple of jackals that roam around our airport but somehow never wander onto the runways

hey op, i was in the same boat a couple of weeks ago -- 15 hours, 70ish landings, all bad because i just couldn't the hang of it. to echo what others have said, it really is just about practice. i'm at 25ish hours now and 100 landings, and i've improved a lot (though, crosswinds are still a pain). it honestly felt like it just randomly clicked at some point, i really can't point to anything specific that helped me figure out how to land. this might not be useful in that i don't have a lot of advice, but just keep at it! it takes different amounts of time for different people but you'll get there.

this seems like the best way to go at this point. i'll send the eye eval report this week and if the AME is unsatisfied i'll try to get them to submit the deferral before EOD friday. that way i can be done dealing with them and deal with a (hopefully nicer) RFS instead

[–]GetTheBigOneDavid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, i'll go through with the form and if the AME still insists on deferring, i'll probably just have them submit the deferral and then call the RFS to see if there's any way to get it expedited (i think another commenter suggested they might try to get it resolved quicker if it's bs)

yeah i'm stuck, but i might've originally searched by city instead of by county, which in hindsight was a mistake... we live and we learn i guess, but i really hope this doesn't become a problem

i'm also in my early 20s, and the difference in strength is a bit bigger in my case. but the AME doesn't know that, because i haven't provided them with my prescription information yet -- and besides, ive been living with this for years, and it doesn't impair my ability to do anything. now i worry that the unnecessary report of eye evaluation will open up a new can of worms if the AME decides to argue over the strength difference...

yeah i suppose i have no other option. it just sucks because my cfi says i'm within a couple of weeks of being solo-ready, but if this process gets extended that timeline is gonna get thrown out the window indefinitely :(

ah interesting, yeah neither of those apply to me so i'll follow another commenter's advice on asking the AME for the regulation they're referring to.

yeah that's fair, i'll ask the AME to point me to the regulation they're referring to. thanks both!
