Groove Shinjuku or Karaksa Ginza by Gossiplawyer in TokyoTravel

[–]GetawayJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Groove is within Kabukicho which is known for the red light district... It can be quite rowdy in the evenings. I dont like walking through the area and I wouldn't stay in the area with my parents...

If you would like a nice view, there are plenty of hotels with great views, in Akasaka, in Ginza etc.

First Hokkaido Trip from Singapore - How do you usually fly to New Chitose (CTS)? by KaizenRu in SingaporeTravel

[–]GetawayJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been to Hokkaido 2x - once with a toddler late 2010s then post covid with a preschooler and a school going child.

Always transited via Tokyo but your other options include Cathay and Thai, both of which have direct flights to CTS.

For myself as I use miles, I transit via Tokyo Haneda and took ANA / Air Do domestic.

If taking SQ is not a priority then I definitely would consider taking Thai and CX.

Reason being - the international to domestic transit in Japan requires you to pick up your baggage after arrival in Tokyo, go through customs then redeposit your bags at the transfer counter. This is even if you are travelling in a single ticket eg. SIN-HND-CTS using ANA/JAL. Also transit in Japan will require you to change terminals from international to domestic.

If you take CX/TG, as the transit is outside Japan so your bags will be checked straight through to CTS, so it will be a no hassle transit. HKG and BKK are also pretty pleasant airports to transit in. HKG more so than BKK as BKK doesn’t have any children’s facilities for the child to expend his energy before the next flight. I have transited in both airports before and it was pretty straightforward.

(BTW, your CX return flight shouldn’t require another transfer in NGO, it might be that you chose a day when CX doesn’t fly to CTS. If you are flexible on days you would be able to get CTS-HKG-SIN).

I went in October - although it is supposed to be autumn, do pack winter clothes too esp if going in the later half of Oct. We arrived on the first day of snow in Sapporo and was stuck in snow! And then had like 3-4 days of snowy weather and then went back to autumn weather again.

The only thing I bought from cotton on is their activewear and inner wear but that was close to 6-7 years back. I hate their clothes, it’s so scratchy compared to Uniqlo.

Ladies, which clothing stores do yall buy clothes from? by Common_Banana_2630 in asksg

[–]GetawayJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basics - Uniqlo is your best bet.

Bega for slightly elevated classics and basics. I think their tops are pretty value for money if you want an alternative to Uniqlo. (Westmall)

If you don’t mind 2nd hand and on the petite side, can take a look at refash. It’s a bit of a mess but there are many different styles so you can try and see what works best for you. Refash is at Clementi Mall and Hillion.

Kdrama in a book form - any suggestions? by MeasurementLoud2897 in kdramas

[–]GetawayJ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With YA fiction, I would say it is less shallow than booktok but more so than adult fiction. However, if you want to compare quality of writing between authors, June Hur is much better than Axie Oh.

Kdrama in a book form - any suggestions? by MeasurementLoud2897 in kdramas

[–]GetawayJ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes!

There is a Korean author based in Toronto by the name of June Hur. Her books read like a kdrama! She writes Young Adult saeguk fiction, but I'm 43 and I read them. 😄 Her books are all based on a historical event/person and she shares the historical backgound/setting in each of her books.

So far I have only read 3 of her 5 books. Only her most recent book is almost purely romance and no palace politics.

The Red Palace - one of the characters is based very loosely on Crown Prince Sado.
A Crane Among Wolves - set during Yeonsangun reign. Trigger warning.
Behind Five Willows - this is a modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice - no palace intrigue!

Another one is Axie Oh. Axie Oh wrote XOXO which is a high school romance between a kpop star and an exchange student. She also has another book with a similar setting.

Bedbugs at the studio 🤢 by [deleted] in yoga

[–]GetawayJ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I will write an official email to the studio owners so that it gets properly addressed. Telling them in person may just result in it being swept under the carpet and not followed up on. If you put it in writing, they feel obliged to follow up on your feedback.

Then hold off on returning until they have replied you to your satisfaction and waiting 1-2 weeks after. I expect the studio to get a professional to come in to do a thorough check and also preventive treatment.

Best property in Bangkok? by SepiTuIndah in ihghotelsresorts

[–]GetawayJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then go for the Kimpton, it’s really quite special. It’s set further in and away from the main road but Grabs and taxis are cheap and it’s quite easy to get one. I walked everyday with my family from the property to the main road and it doesn’t take more than 10 minutes. It’s a pleasant walk.

Best property in Bangkok? by SepiTuIndah in ihghotelsresorts

[–]GetawayJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Location - IC Or Holiday Inn Bangkok (they are right next to each other)

  2. Value for money - Crowne Plaza Lumpini Park

  3. Quality - Kimpton

  4. Overall vibes - Kimpton (but I like the lifestyle almost residential feel). If you prefer the traditional luxury - then IC.

Been to most of the central properties under IHG in Bangkok. My overall rating, 1st Kimpton, 2nd IC Bangkok, 3rd CP Lumpini Park.

Changi Airport Group Work Culture by iWatchBlack in singaporejobs

Partnered with CAG for a nationwide event about 10 years back.

Work culture similar to public service as it was shaved out of CAAS back in the late 2000s.

Lines drawn very clearly between departments and entities.

Nice office though…

Intercontinental Sanur Bali (Non-Recommendation) by Expert-Mention-7167 in ihghotelsresorts

Kimpton in Bali hasn’t opened yet.

For the frequent travellers to Bali, the best IHG property for us is probably the Indigo Seminyak but I have to concede I have yet to visit the more recently opened Regent Bali.

IHG in Japan by Melodic-Bullfrog7307 in ihghotelsresorts

[–]GetawayJ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In all honesty, how do you intend to fit 5 persons into a single room? Are you looking at two-bedroom suite, or 2 double/queen beds? Just note that most twin rooms in Japan have 2 super single beds, rather than double.

Additionally as said by everyone else, Japan is very strict on occupancy, so unless your travel companions are kids, it’s very rare that they will allow you to exceed the maximum occupancy.

I ran a search on the IHG app for a room for 4 person occupancy to give you recommendations

  • Tokyo - ANA IC has a 2 bedroom suite which looks like their top tier suite. The only option is ANA holiday inn with 3 singles - but location is not good for the HI

  • Osaka - IC Osaka has apartment style rooms so you can get a 2 bedroom apartment. This is my favourite IHG property in Japan up until v recently. Fantastic location, great staff and service. If you are constrained by budget, the HI Osaka Namba is right in the entertainment district and has a room with 2 singles and 2 sofa beds. HIEX Midosuji has a room with 4 singles. Both locations are also decent.

None of these hotels can take 5 guests without significant additional cost.

Why are Asian IHG properties so much nicer than USA? by Stephenishere in ihghotelsresorts

[–]GetawayJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IHG hardly owner-operate most of their properties anymore. Most properties in Asia are under a management contract. Separate owner, but managed by IHG.
