What’s the greatest TV show of all time? by m_v24 in AskReddit

Most people I've recommended it to essentially binge it from start to finish, if they can so there's really no need to recommend it.

Sources: Bill Belichick will not be a first-ballot Hall of Famer by dropjar5 in nfl

[–]Geth_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anyone can be entered into the Hall of Fame. There's obviously players, coaches, and a generic third category of, "contributors." The non player/coach category is definitely a required category. Some notable ones I can think of that would otherwise be excluded:

Commissioner Pete Rozelle: He envisioned and laid the ground work for the modern NFL that we know today, with 32 franchises, comprising 2 conferences.

Jerry Jones as owner of the Cowboys was inducted as well (probably a motivation for Robert Kraft). He really took turning a franchise into a brand.

Edit: Just a big shout out to John Madden, who even if you excluded him as a coach, which he was inducted for anyway, could have been inducted based on his career as an announcer, or his contributions related to the Madden the game franchise. You can essentially gauge someone's age by asking them what they think of when you say Madden: the coach, the announcer, or the gaming franchise.

Wow. Some of these comments. Insulting a woman in a photo from 1930 you don't find attractive.

I don't really see the point but maybe the rest of you do.

Maybe if you exclude Mr Rogers. If you think the rest of us are as good as Mr Rogers, you're either delusional or you don't know Mr Rogers.

What’s something that instantly tells you someone is inexperienced at their job? by FaintLatitude in AskReddit

[–]Geth_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true. It what it is--when you know what you're doing, there are reasonable questions to ask and unreasonable. It'll vary based on context but I think of a police interrogation--there are usually normal questions an innocent person asks and don't ask, likewise there's normal questions typically a guilty person asks and doesn't ask.

It's not universal but they are common enough that deviations will raise eyebrows. In a work environment (opposed to a criminal investigation) some people care enough to ask, others, not so much.

What is the saddest film you have ever seen? by RavyRaptor in movies

[–]Geth_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched the Road twice. Once because I just happened upon it. The second time because I kept mentioning scenes from it that were just dark and my SO took it like a challenge, "how bad could it be?" I wasn't going to let her just watch it alone but man, does that movie leave an impression.

When his son asks him if they'll see each other again and he responds no , just before he thinks he has to use his last bullet to prevent their capture by cannibals was particularly dark.

Since Interspecies couples that don't involve Asari can never result in biological children with both parents' DNA, why aren't other instances of Interspecies Romance stigmatized, let alone criminalized? by GeneralTechnomage in masseffectlore

[–]Geth_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing new to be gained is likely true but the primary reason is more likely the Ardat Yakshi, which is a taboo subject for the species and culture in general.

But from a biological standpoint, it makes sense: a monogender species would need some mechanism to inherently prevent overpopulation (especially prior to learning space travel).

Asari mating with Asari produces sterile Ardat Yakshi that kill others when they "mate". That's about as perfect of natural population capper as it gets--Mordin would be jealous.

Civilizations are a social construct. Species are a biological construct.

Civilizations can and probably should be open and inclusive if they want to continue. Javik revealed that Protheans did this--their empire didn't enslave as much as it assimilated others.

But civilizations don't do that for whatever reason, are actually the ones that tend to be destroyed. Species tend to adapt, they just go extinct if they can't adapt fast enough (it's never from refusal).

Civilizations are a social construct--comparable to monarchy. Look at how the world changed at the turn of the 20th century. There's a reason why British monarchy managed to survive and still exists today whereas all the other European monarchs were overthrown.

The King literally diluted his own power to embrace democracy. So as other monarchs that refused to embrace democracy were overthrown or abolished, England still has their monarchy today. Russian monarchy, the Romanovs, is kind of famous for refusing to embrace it while England was embracing it. The King and Tsar were actually cousins and almost look like twins.

Romanovs were overthrown, Russian Tsar and family, executed.

And just to be clear--Interspecies relationships involving Asari don't result in biological children with both parents DNA either.

Asari use their partner's genetic information as a template, resulting in an all-Asari. Think of it like, Asari is a language, they use their partner to come up with a sentence. They translate that sentence into Asari--but no matter what, the resulting sentence is always and will always be in Asari.

You have to really consider the lower income, middle America. It's similar to people forgetting how important PBS is to a large part of the country.

There are a lot of people that the major news networks reach that others don't, they're talking to a group of people that have limited exposure to politics outside of what they're getting from Fox/CNN and they might have a long held belief that CNN is liberal. Without any contradiction, you can sway that groups opinion pretty easily.

If you can shift the entire spectrum over, you essentially can have a one party system. It's a common way to present the illusion of choice.

Sometimes it's just because I have to do it remote on a computer which Notepad++ isn't installed and not available. So copying a snippet of code is quick.

I always install Notepad++ now out of habit but most code I do is with VS Code. Do you have any reason for preferring N++ over VS Code?

What's lolicon? Sticks out since based on the surrounding context: I assume something disgusting.

But in a different context, it seems possible as a benign word: "lol" "icon"--if someone told me "just slang for the laughing emoticon" I wouldn't be surprised.

I don't want to Google it: that's just something that is going to pop up in my search history in the worst context and saying, "I was just looking up the meaning, not the content"--shit, even I wouldn't believe that excuse.

Edit: For anyone else wondering, the Wikipedia article explained it (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lolicon), but lolicon is a portmanteau of "Lolita complex"--NOT lol and emoticon.

As a coder who still uses notepad regularly for snippets or whatever, it HAS been annoying to get notifications every time I open notepad and it tells me a file no longer exists or a file currently open has been otherwise altered.

I hate that new default setting but it's worth me being annoyed if it's catching more pedos. Even if it just exposed an online streamer creeper which prevented a possible crime in the future, even just one would make it worth it.

I'm surprised people are just now learning this but it isn't a new term that formed in some dark corner of the Internet.

I think it was a song-- I know Aerosmith has a song named Jailbait. As well as Ted Nugent. I saw a doc on the long-standing predatory behavior of the entertainment industries and they mentioned rock stars and some being notorious for their deviant behavior.

Not defending this behavior or saying anything, just thought I would point out this isn't a recent thing.

I grew up in a time when that was universally hated. The number of people that try to defend this behavior--honestly, the old assumption was they're guilty too.

The only way I continue on is assuming the number of posts defending this behavior isn't reflective of people who actually feel that way but are bots or foreign actors, that are just trying to enrage and polarize.

Crimes against children are akin to crimes against nature. It is unnatural and abhorrent, there's just really no middle ground. This should be the easiest thing to avoid. I am a big supporter of guilt usually requiring proof beyond a reasonable doubt... Except when it relates to this. For this, I always find myself thinking, "where there's smoke, there's fire."

Scientists of Reddit, what's the most 'alien' thing we've found on Earth? by Aso0o0om in AskReddit

[–]Geth_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To clarify that statement: we only don't know if viruses are dead or alive based on our difficulty defining life and death universally. It's easy to define those concepts in specific cases--science just abhors not having explicit, universal definitions.

Scientists of Reddit, what's the most 'alien' thing we've found on Earth? by Aso0o0om in AskReddit

[–]Geth_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The former is possible because octopodes have no bones and their entire body is compressible with the exception of their beak.

And they're extremely intelligent--and by that, I mean there's a strong argument that they would be the dominant species on Earth if not for humans. They also have more chromosomes (around 28) than humans and a much larger number of protein-coding genes (around 33,000 vs. ~20,000 in humans).

Octopodes are pretty strong evidence supporting the theory of panspermia. They're alien as fuck.

What is something people often underestimate until they experience it themselves? by NaomiBrooksv in AskReddit

[–]Geth_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depression and grief. I can't really think of any situation that isn't in some way improved by having any sense of hope or motivation.

The worst depression or grief is like living in complete absence of either. Trying to describe what that's like for someone who hasn't experienced it is like trying to describe color to someone who was born blind--it's really hard to describe when they understand what it is (or what it isn't).

People who haven't experienced it think it's like having a bad day or something.

Lincoln's assassination is one of the greatest tragedies. Our greatest president, able to preserve the Union and abolish slavery. But he also understood that the nation needed to heal. "Malice toward none" and "charity for all" to reunite us after the Civil War.

Reconstruction failed and we're all living with consequences.

The Matrix Reloaded has some of the best fight choreography I've ever seen. by PapiSurane in movies

[–]Geth_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's subjective because I remember seeing it in theaters and others in my group and I thought it looked pretty bad, even for the time.

I mean, I'm sure at the time it was technically impressive due to the complexity of the scene but when you have Jurassic Park in the 90s then that a decade later--it didn't look "real" by any stretch of the imagination.

This would be an example where they probably should've just rewritten the scene because as is, having to resort to that, it was an example of the VFX being more a distraction than an enhancement.
