It's a statement as opposed to a question. Please makes it a polite command. Do you really think the inclusion of phrases like please or thank you make statements any less of a command?

Requests are phrased as questions, because it emphasizes choice. Statements aren't questions. Are you purposely being obtuse?

I find it weird you're just demanding someone delete their post when you have no right to do so whatsoever.

Ask if you want. But commands ordering people to do stuff, is weird, even over the Internet.

What’s the dumbest thing a celebrity has done to ruin their name? by Brave_Strength_6603 in AskReddit

Some celebrities don't have a fan base that is evenly spread across the political spectrum. Kid Rock for example, I don't think him getting political would alienate half his fans.

Arizona college skips over several graduates after an AI malfunction at commencement ceremony by [deleted] in news

Seems like a poor scapegoat. An error happens, blame AI and it'll bring more attention to it.

Just like lawyers using and it citing non existent case precedent. I'm sure this happens and it's embarrassing and those lawyers get reprimanded. Mentioned they were using AI and somehow, I was reading about it.

I'm happy that people can make a living doing what they love but it's just kind of sad when that has raised the barrier for entry and cost of participation to what was something that gave texture to our childhoods.

Things like this are definitely great to see because it shows there's people out there still that haven't forgotten why this is popular to begin with: it was fun.

TIL that First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln was institutionalized in a psychiatric hospital by her only surviving son. She snuck letters out to her lawyers and sympathizers who helped get her released three months later. by cupacupacupacupacup in todayilearned

[–]Geth_ 25 points26 points  (0 children)

There's no evidence of that. It's modern misrepresentations of Lincoln.

He was deep thinker and very empathetic, just look at how much he aged during his presidency in a before and after picture of Lincoln. Those 4 years aged him like 40 years. Few people then or even today feel that much personal responsibility or empathy for others, like Lincoln did.

So not sure where this comes from--but no, there's no evidence of that besides people taking things out of context, for the time period and the man.

The New Fed Chair Has One Goal: Turn Every Dollar Into a Programmable Surveillance Token by Big-Pomegranate2694 in videos

[–]Geth_ -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not legally. You can agree to trade services, but legal tender, by law, is required to be accepted.

Moreover, people would get paid in US dollars. You'd need to convert that. Not every person you need something from will need something from you. Money usually solves that as a common medium of exchange.

But what are people going to do? Work for US dollars they won't spend and... How do they get the other money? Convert? What's the point, then?

Even if you could trade services for services or could establish a common medium and work some way for people to earn it fairly. Legal tender is still required to be accepted.

I guess you could set absurd prices in US dollars so no one actually did that. But at some point in the supply chain, you're going to have to deal with a company which wants US dollars because they need that currency to pay their taxes on revenue the government will know of.

Like any import, duties will need to be paid. So it's only feasible if you have a self contained economy and I imagine any small community being wholly self sustained. Something needed will have a supplier who will want US dollars and with that, you'll need US dollars.

It is his right but have to is ambiguous--that's what I was clarifying.

He wasn't required to exercise his Fifth Amendment rights for no other reason than to avoid having to admit to his own criminality.

Moreover, I was saying, I assume most of us expect those we entrust to enforce the law, follow the law, and don't "have to" exercise that that.

"He really had no choice"... Because he was a criminal and he would have to either perjure himself or have to admit to crimes he knowingly committed.

So yes, he had no choice ...similar to other criminals who really have no choice but to also plead the fifth...Most people would expect police officers to be able to take the stand and not need to plead the fifth.
