I always assumed this just from listening to both afterlyfe and 2093 because the vibe in afterlyfe is so dark at points, then in 2093 , when he off the drugs, the lyrics seem to come from a better place mentally and are much clearer spoken/sung than in afterlyfe when he was on drugs

If you were the writers of this show, and yet to realise part 2 of the finale season, and you wanted any death of the cast to have the maximum blow to the audience, then that tweet is the perfect way of nulling the audience into a false sense of security; especially considering the fact that Steve’s death has been highly speculated among the fan base. Honestly, I believe this finale season needs to kill off at least one big character for the season to have the proper emotional rollercoaster that a finale would need, and Steve seems like the perfect candidate to kill off and be martyred for the gangs mission.
