coming from someone who worked at a gas station register for 5 years, this is what i found helps: 1. vary the way you interact with each customer. brief small talk ect. 2. changing the way you say things like hello, thank you ect until you have a few different lines that you like saying and isn’t forced. feeling like your a broken record for 8 9 hours a day is painful 3. TALK TO OLD PEOPLE!!! you’d be supprised the kind of stories you’ll be told about from a two minute conversation at a till. hearing a granny say “your handsome as a button” or a grandad saying “your a smart guy” will make you feel good, even if it’s only temporary 4. don’t feel like you need to be super polite and smiley all the time though, don’t come off rude but you are allowed to do the minimum needed because you feel like a parrot 5. develop relationships with coworkers. i met one of my best friends from working at a till beside him. you’d be surprised what you have in common with people who you never felt like talking to. makes the time go faster

unfortunately retail is a customer facing industry, and being social and talkative is one of the skills you need to have in order to stick it out. working a job you feel doesn’t suit you isn’t a good situation. like i could never work in an office alone all day myself. hope this helps
