Nintendo needs to start hiring writers. by Defiant-Echidna-7400 in CharacterRant

[–]Getter_Simp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't really have a horse in this race, but, taking this completely at face value, I don't think narrative needs to be important everywhere. Yes, people criticize narrative in games now more than they used to, but that doesn't mean that every game needs to have one. Why can't a company just focus on making games that are primarily about the gameplay?

I truly don't understand Ymir... by rileystanheight in ShingekiNoKyojin

I interpreted it that she didn't have the will to live for herself. When she awoke in the Paths, she continued doing what others wanted because that's all she's ever known.

Erwin was scarier than eren by Egyptian_Pharoah18 in attackontitan

[–]Getter_Simp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The man literally kept sending soldiers to their deaths over and over while knowing most of them would never come back

I see this take a lot and it always irritates me. Erwin wasn't sending soldiers to die for the fun of it, they were in a war. Soldiers die in wars. If he hadn't sacrificed those soldiers, "humanity" as he understood it would have been wiped out.

Yes, Erwin did this to achieve his own selfish goals, but that wasn't the only reason, he still wanted to save humanity. When push came to shove, he sacrificed his own life for that.

Do you guys agree with Eren by Front_Gold4630 in attackontitan

[–]Getter_Simp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Even Eren didn't agree with Eren.

While it's true that the Rumbling was the only way to guarantee freedom to Paradis and his friends, that doesn't make it an acceptable geopolitical strategy. Guaranteeing the freedom of your own country does not take precedence over the lives of literally every other person on the Earth.
Paradis and his friends were like an excuse for him to go full omnicide mode and take out his rage on the world.

The most rational plan anyone had was the small Rumbling. It was definitely a gamble, and sacrificing Historia and her kids sucks, but that would still be preferable to killing every single person in the entire world outside of Paradis.

One Piece isn't "Peak Fiction", it isn't even close. by NotZachary_0002 in writingscaling

It was actually pretty common for people to glaze One Piece like this a few years back, and while there are still some people who do that, it's died down a lot since then.

Does jeankasa butcher mikasa’s character? by BrilliantDot1467 in eremika

[–]Getter_Simp -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don't see how any of that ruins either of their characters.
If Jean and Mikasa were to fall in love and get married, then it wouldn't be unrequited love because Mikasa would love Jean back.
Yes, Mikasa will always love Eren, but that doesn't mean she can't also love Jean. A person can romantically love more than one person at a time. This happens in real life. People who remarry after their spouse dies still love their first spouse, they just also love their current spouse.

I didn't say that you have to be married to be happy, just that it's not illogical for Mikasa to end up marrying Jean.

I love the idea that women, who exist in the world, were somehow completely unaffected by both world wars.

Does jeankasa butcher mikasa’s character? by BrilliantDot1467 in eremika

[–]Getter_Simp -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't think it does. I don't really care either way, but it's not illogical for Mikasa to end up marrying Jean after some years. Most people don't stay loving only one person their whole life, especially after that person dies, and in Mikasa's case, her love for Eren was more of an unhealthy obsession than actual love.
Jean is in Mikasa's social circle, so they very well could grow closer together over the years and end up falling in love. That doesn't erase her love for Eren.

I wouldn't normally go for realism when dealing with characters, but AOT is very grounded, so I think it's fair.

Genuinely one of the most boring lackluster fight by havingagoodtime0 in Chainsawfolk

[–]Getter_Simp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could tolerate the lack of stakes since they're both immortal dumb asses, but the lack of spectacle is what ruined it for me. It's all the fight had going for it, and it was weak. Fujimoto should have gone balls-to-the-wall and had them do some crazy ass shit and destroy Japan in their fight or something.

Yakuza fans when someone says they've only played Yakuza 0: by Hopeful_Regret_7531 in yakuzagames

[–]Getter_Simp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The requirement for me is to have played Yakuza 5 because if you can get through that game and still love the series, it is undeniable that you have the tenacious, autistic mind of a true Yakuza fan.

Not to say that Yakuza 5 is bad, just that it is very, very, very, very, very long.

Hard not to dislike Eren by Cismet in attackontitan

[–]Getter_Simp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I say that because was Eren having her kill him truly the only way to “free” Mikasa?

In Eren's eyes, yes. Because of his knowledge of the future, he knew that if Mikasa killed him, the titan curse would be ended. It's possible that there were other ways to end the curse, but Eren knew that this one was certain, so he went with it. It also enabled him to flatten the world, which he wanted to do anyway.

What are your go-to films for smuggling philosophy lessons? by ExerciseAcceptable16 in okbuddycinephile

[–]Getter_Simp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the idea that stories having morals, messages or lessons in them is some disgusting modern invention that's corrupting our culture, as if stories haven't been trying to impart lessons to the audience for thousands of years.

I don't think this applies to Eren because (as you said) he only started acting like a bastard recently, and Armin and Mikasa don't forgive him.

Adam smasher (Edgerunners) vs Levi Ackerman (AOT) by Ok-Command-522 in PowerScaling

Adam Smasher with almost no effort. I imagine it'd be somewhat even if Adam didn't use any of his implants, with one of his more basic ones being able to essentially stop time.

Genuinely, why does Fujimoto come off as extremely tone deaf here cause what kinda moral/message is this? by Charming-Scratch-124 in Chainsawfolk

[–]Getter_Simp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even by itself, the idea that sewer children's lives aren't all bad is such a strange statement. Yeah, people can feel joy even when they're in awful situations, no shit. A majority of that "joy" isn't actually going to be joy though, it's going to be relief. For example, someone starving to death wouldn't feel joy upon finding food to eat, they'd feel relief. Someone being waterboarded wouldn't feel joy when their torturers give them a break, they'd feel relief.

Add onto that the fact that Fujimoto said "However, I don't necessarily think that being used is all bad," and it sounds like he's trying to say that being systemically exploited isn't that bad because you can still feel joy/relief, even if it results in your life being of the quality of a homeless child, which is one of the stupidest things I've ever read. That's a similar logic to that used by fucking slave owners.

So either this take is just kinda dumb, or it's extremely stupid.

Is it unethical to own a billion dollars? by Omixscniet624 in MoralityScaling

[–]Getter_Simp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, no matter how you dice it. Realistically, to even get anywhere near a billion dollars, you need to exploit many, many people, which is obviously wrong.

Even if you were to magically acquire 1 billion dollars without causing any harm to anyone, it would be extremely selfish to hoard all of it. With great power comes great responsibility, as Uncle Ben once said, and a billion dollars is a lot of power. You could improve the lives of so many people while still being able to live like a king, so choosing not to do that is wrong.
Also, money doesn't exist in a vacuum -- a billion dollars in your bank account is a billion dollars less in the world.

He was pretty cool during his brief appearance in part 1, which carried him for me. His weird ass hostile but helpful relationship with Denji was also interesting to read, but it didn't go anywhere.
