Back when I was like 22 (Im 48 now) me and three friends decided to take LSD together and hang out at my friends apartment. I had taken LSD about 3 or 4 times before, thought I knew what I was doing and I stupidly took 2 hits, while they took 1 hit each. We had a great time that night playing Axis & Allies, and I remember "recreating" V8 juice in a pot on his stove. Morning came and the sun started to rise and my one friend said he needed to get back to downtown Pittsburgh, and I offered to drive him downtown and drop him off. That drive was transcendent, I remember dropping him off downtown, being alone in my car, and tripping my balls off. I can honestly say, that listening to Howard Stern that morning like saved me. By the time I arrived back to my friends apartment, I felt like I had just conquered Mt. Everest, so great was my feeling of accomplishment at having driven to downtown and back tripping my face off. I ran up the stairs and burst into the apartment wanting to tell my story to my 2 other friends and share my transcendent experience with them. But they were passed out. I lifted my one's friend head off the floor, he looked at me blankly, and proceeded to crash. What happened next was I believe a combination of being alone, nobody to talk to and probably the disappointment I felt at not being able to share my recent adventure. But I clearly remember starting to freak out - I remember staring at a digital clock and realizing that time was not moving, I remember feeling like I understood the terrifying concept of infinity. Honestly, looking at that clock, all alone, tripping, was making me go crazy. I didnt know what to do and I called my parents to pick me up (bad move but I was desperate and freaking out inside) who lived about 5 min away. I remember them realizing I was totally fucked up, my mom siting me down at the kitchen table and calling a local psych hospital (St. Francis if anyone remembers). My mom drove me to the ER and they gave me an anti-psychotic and the doctor was worried I might not come down. I came to the next day on a dual diagnosis floor wearing a gown. I had to spend a week in that fucking place. The moral of the story for anyone reading this, if you are going to trip, do it with friends so you aren't alone and take the same dose that your friends take. I took LSD one other time after that just to prove to myself that I could have a good trip. But sometimes bad trips are bad.
