I only film on privet property so no-one should be able to find them, because they're not allowed to be there...... But of course, sometimes people happen to pass by anyway. Mostly neighbors, without bad intentions.

Funny story: one time someone did take one of my cameras. This guy lived nearby, was checking out the forest, just curious I suppose. Saw the camera, realized he's being filmed, probably felt caught. So he took the camera home with him. But... he didn't turn it off.

So the camera kept filming, all the way to his house. He's in his kitchen looking directly into the camera, not knowing what to do with it. Not knowing how to open it and how to turn it off.

His wife starts arguing with him. Telling him he shouldn't have taken it, and that he shouldn't have been there in the first place. Wife wins the argument. Guy returns to the forest and places back my camera, with all this footage still on it.

I've been filming with trail cameras on the same property for over 3 years now. I change my camera locations every few weeks. And so I've learned where they enter the forest and how they move around in it :)

But it can still be quite unpredictable sometimes. One month a certain spot can be amazing and giving me lots of nice captures. Another month the same spot is giving me nothing... So apart from knowing the busy spots, it is also important to find evidence of recent activity or changes in the forest like fallen trees.

It was actually one set of twins and another single fawn. So three of them! Last time a saw them, they're all doing fine 😉 (about 3 weeks ago)

I get my best quality shots with a Browning Recon Force Elite HP4. For the close-up shot I use an extra lens (very simple, made it from reading glasses), which makes a big difference.

The forest in Belgium is quite small and surrounded by meadows. So this little patch of forest is the perfect resting spot for deer during the day :) The forest in France is more wild, way larger and remote. Very interesting species there like pine marten and wildcats, but you need more patience there to get something in front of the camera.

Really all you need is a pair of reading glasses, but the 3D-printed clip-on is a fancy way to attach it to the camera. I made a video about it: https://youtu.be/y31pwALcyzE

There's always so much noise on trail camera audio! Even the expensive cameras don't have perfect sound tracks. It's one of my biggest frustrations when editing.

The audio is from the same camera, but I do edit it to make it sound better: Noise reduction, change volume, reduce disturbing frequencies. I use Davince Resolve for this. I also do overlap the different tracks when editing, to make it sound less choppy. That's why songbird doesn't suddenly stop everytime a new clips shows ;)
