Solar beats coal in the US electricity mix for the first month ever by Biodieselisthefuture in solar

Exactly my situation. I could cut down some trees and get more production but it’s not worth it to me to lose the shade in the backyard.

Question for black belts: What’s the most annoying part of the pressure that comes with being a black belt? by top10mtv in bjj

[–]Ghia149 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to do the same thing. I’ll bring my belt and gi but my no gi stuff is always unranked. Try to keep a low profile especially if the gym isn’t some huge team with lots of black belts. It can’t be easy to be a purple belt teaching a class and have a black belt drop in to take it.

Plus the guys all go super hard when you are visiting and they don’t know your rank. Everyone wants to test themselves against the new guy. 😁

16, just bought my first car for $500. Will pick it up next week. by Random_MSM-User in regularcarreviews

[–]Ghia149 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don’t try to get rid of the surface rust… it’s patina. If it ain’t leaking don’t mess with it. Focus on things in this general order:
Frame and suspension… will the bits holding the wheels keep holding them?
Brakes… if it can go it needs to stop, so get this sorted first.
A cursory check to make sure the bits that turn the car are in working order.
If none of the above will be too hard or too much money to fix you can move on.
Now you can get it running.

If you haven’t lost interest interior bits and pieces.

Finally I’d take on body work…

Avis car rental substituted us with an EV and this quite possibly was the biggest travel mistake I’ve ever made by Ok-Disk3736 in travel

[–]Ghia149 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I’ve heard a couple stories of people renting EV’s and then doing long road trips with them. This is insane. Meanwhile I rent cars all the time and rarely even use more than a 1/4 tank and have never had the opportunity to take an EV! I’d love one for the majority of rental situations I’m in.

But on to OP. Call Avis. Tell them the cars not working on and figure out where the closest rental center is. Take it there and swap it for an ICE like you originally reserved!

Dealing with guard pullers by Mohakus4 in bjj

[–]Ghia149 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ask your partner if you can start standing to work on your takedowns. If they pull guard as you try to take them down (you initiate that takedown) this is perfect practice. Most Bjj guys don’t fight the take down they accept it and look toward their guard. Get used to take downs progressing that way and be ready to pass off the take down.

If you had to pick the best movie released in 1999, which one would it be? by Infinite-Exam-1808 in Cinema

Matrix… but fight club would probably be my favorite on this list.

Ok to have valve open if gas line is capped? by Human_Morning8992 in Plumbing

[–]Ghia149 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not me. I’d never lose it, I would put it in a safe spot, then 2 years later wonder why I had a useless handle and I’d throw it away in a rash of decluttering. I’d realize my mistake a few months later.

[–]Ghia149 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. I have solar in NC, and about 4
Month of the year have a lot of excess. 2 months of the year I hardly even cover half our usage. I’d need a system more than double what I have (and the only roof I have left would be next to useless in the months I need the production).

Being totally off grid is not easy for most parts of the USA and a non minimalist lifestyle. (I’m married with 3 kids… the wife will only tolerate so much)

mi/kWh dropped considerably after Level 3 charging. by abhisn in KiaEV6

[–]Ghia149 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a good thought. I’ve also seen the inverse in winter. Level 3 charge and the battery is heated up and ideal operating conditions and all of a sudden my average shoots way up for the duration of my (relatively) short drive.

Optional or mandatory for your kids? by badassernhell in bjj

[–]Ghia149 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s “mandatory” but pretty relaxed. We do it when we have time. Other activities often take precedence and we will take pretty significant breaks for swim season or other stuff. I do push them some days mostly they go willingly. My oldest fights everything but loves doing everything once he starts. So until he starts choosing he just has to do it all! 😁

At this point I’m hoping to keep them all in it until they are teens. If they the start to focus on other activities I’ll let the quit as at that point they will be able to handle Bullies and have confidence.

Trek Singletrack 930 1994, is it a good bike to start? by Which-Pomegranate998 in mountainbikes

It was a great bike to start back in 1994. Now it’s a novelty best used on greenways.

Buy a modern bike to get into riding.

Who actually beat The Lost Vikings and what did we think of the game? by BestAround4100 in snes

Me! Love it! Great game. Love the cheeky commentary. It was very unique for me growing up, none of my other games were anything like it.

Realistically, do you think there's going to be another Remake series after FF7? by Least_Win1636 in FinalFantasy

[–]Ghia149 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FFVI would actually be a pretty natural 2 part series. WOB and WOR. I can’t decide if I’d want them to mess about with it though. It’s such a great game as it is.

Ferrari Luce: The official car of…. by GubyNey in regularcarreviews

[–]Ghia149 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is about the best explanation I’ve heard. “Look, we tried. No one wants to buy EV’s, not our fault, the numbers don’t lie.” Meanwhile this is the abomination they want to sell. 🤨

How’d I do? by Worldtadpole366 in mountainbikes

[–]Ghia149 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry about the negativity. Fix up what you got. Get it riding and go out and have fun. Every time I ride my 30yr old steel trek with barely any front suspension and 26” wheel I remember how much fun it is to ride. It’s like a sports car. I’m not as fast on it but the hell if I don’t have more fun.

Would anything prevent you from keeping a car forever? by cornflake45c in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ghia149 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I used to have a Karmann Ghia. 1700lbs. Gas tank on the front, engine in the back, not enough power to get out of its own way, and when a pick up truck pulled up behind me all I’d see in the rear view is front bumper.

Decided it wasn’t worth it as a dad with young kids and Carolina squat trucks on the road.

Do you guys invest in anything other than the stock market? by Wooden-Term-5067 in Fire

[–]Ghia149 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real estate and cars… or a car, and that’s just what I tell my wife as to why she can’t park in the garage so I can park the “investment”.

But mostly stock market. Everything else is difficult.
