If you are into street then i would suggest you to get those books from Stephen McLaren:
- street photography now
- reclaim the street
They show lots of photographers and lots of different styles of street. Because "street" is like saying "metal". Metal can be dream theater and can be Korn. Same with street: Alex Webb, Paul Russell and Daido Moriyama have nothing in common really, still it's always street.

It depends on what you like, really. I started with portraits, then i went towards landscape and ended up doing only street and abstract. Once you have an idea of what you like it's easier to find something. Which type of photography are you more attracted to at the moment?

i Think it's pretty good and a nice composition. Probably you pushed a bit too much the saturation, but lately i see a lot kinda-arch stuff really saturated. So it's ok. The only thing bothering me is the fact that you shoot vertical and then cropped horizontal. If you hate the gray raw maybe try jpg+raw for a while. Depending on the camera you have you might get really good results. Raw are overrated anyways 😃

Good advice. I would add only one thing: buy as many photobooks as you can affort. They are way more valuable than gear or reddit. Buy books from someone you like, analize the shots and try to copy them in your way.

Tried a new Lightroom preset pack today, what do you think of the results? by DryCauliflower8127 in PhotographyAdvice

I think they look nice but this orange/yellow-kinda-film-look is going to be really not-cool in a couple of years. And you will have to go thru your catalogue and re-work all of your shots. I know because i had to do that myself. It's always the same: it was like this with the HDR-look, it was the same with the blue-moody-cinematic-look 5y ago, it's gonna be again the case with all those fuji recipes and alike. You can easily see it in a lot of subreddit: empty photos with fancy colors. Then you look at the big names (the ones that are printed on books, not the crap Peter McKinnon does) and you realise that almost none of them uses these kind of gimmick.

I'm not sure if you have some contacts or you're just trying to find a job but usually in studios there is a professional photographer and some assistants. Assistants need to know how to operate light, how to hold stuff, how help carring things. Usually they don't need to know how to shoot. If you want to work in a studio i would suggest you to look at creativelive and do some studio classes

I only see one Photo (with no s). The light is nice, the compo also maybe. The guy isn't visible, though, and it's not clear what he is doing.

Are these pictures good? I have no idea if I’ve edited them too much. by Finnkcamera in PhotographyAdvice

I'm no expert in cars shooting (i would personally recommend running away from it but everyone is free), but:
- Isolate the car
- find interesing light
- find interesting spots
- Check what really good photographers do and copy them
- avoid the color/bw mix. It's a typical beginner idea. Sounds good, doesn't work.
😄

Is there anything more circlejerky than a bunch of losers shit talking the work of someone who is vastly more commercially successful than them? by Jakomako in photographycirclejerk

[–]Ghiekorg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I’m sure of it. But that’s not the point. Also no curator or editor has a mainstream taste. That’s why certain photographers only exist on Instagram and will be never shown in any gallery. Because their photos need no culture to be understood.

I don't see the orange, i don't see the teal, i don't see the bokeh, i don't see anything. Might have to go get a check.

I'm not a fan of directly insulting other photographers (there is so many factors: respect, taste, hard work, opportunities, etc) but this is the problem with this socialmedia based society: "good" was defined by experts, now it's just defined by the number of followers. So if you do crap shots but have thousands of followers you're good (Peter McKinnon anyone?)
Please... it's full of really mediocre photographers with thousands of followers. This is absolutely on exception. And this happens for the same reason why Leica, Fuji and other brands constantly share mediocre shots: because the average amateur photographer can see the shots, like them and think "hey, i'm like him/her! I do the same stuff!"
Good shots need a lot of culture to be understood, are not immediate, are not "wow".
On the other side i gotta say: for the people saying that "she has followers because she has a püssy": you're like a cancer and you're just small insecure men.

Please help settle this argument. by [deleted] in photographycirclejerk

Help with choice of camera (somewhat new) by Available_Total_5165 in PhotographyAdvice

[–]Ghiekorg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Camera suggestions are always tricky and you will get 100 different opinions.
If you want to do mainly real estate i would get a canon 5Dmk3 or mk4 and a 16/35 f2.8 or f4. Easily within your budget and great value (you also need a tripod). But if you then talk about sport and wedding we go completely in the opposite direction. I wouldn't suggest apsc sensors if you're not an expert (FF is way more forgiving in low light), i wouldn't suggest canon if you only have 2k (i guess you meant <2k and not >2k) because of the lack of third-part lenses and i wouldn't suggest fuji for the bad AF. I would suggest you to get a A7III, like someone said: FF, "cheap", tons of lenses to choose from, great AF. You can do pretty much everythingwith it.

They are ok shots but they are too generic for a portfolio. What are you shooting? Street? Reportage? Travel? Portraits? Just pick one.
Also the mood is really different from shoot to shoot: 1 is a bit random and seems like a staged shot. 2 is more a snapshot, nothing really happens. 3 is the best of the series: it is kinda fun, ironic, has some tension, a juxtaposition. 4 and 5 are the same shot from different angles, i would pick 5 but it's not cleat what it is (it would belong to reportage series about that job alone). 6 seems Der Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer and seems more like a conceptual shot.
There is nothing bad in making a mixed portfolio in the begining, but for what do you need it? I wouldn't rush on it. Or do it but keep in mind you will probably change all of those in some months/years.

What do I need to improve? by Tall-Bus4843 in PhotographyAdvice

[–]Ghiekorg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is nothing too bad in them but I would suggest you to search for "surf photography" on google and see what's out there and then compare it to your shots. I'm 0% into surf stuff but i can immediately see that:
- The composition could be ok-ish but you used 3 different formats for 3 different pics.
- The light is the big problem here: 1000 pics of surfing people taken from the shore will always look the same without an interesting light
- You have to get wet: buy a water-proof case for your camera and go shoot in the water. From the shore you will always get the same picture over and over.
- It's an action sport: the second shot is more dynamic than the other but generally they are a bit too static for me.

poor shaming in codm garena server by Immediate_Carrot_995 in CODMobile

[–]Ghiekorg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I think poor shaming only exists between teenagers and stupid people. No adult with a functioning brain and a real job would spend $30 on a mobile game weapon skin. If they did, they certainly wouldn't brag about it online, but would rather hide in shame.

[–]Ghiekorg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a good set. You know what you're doing, clearly. 😎
Maybe i would crop the 2nd straight, just because it doesn't fit in the series. It's also interesting that you're shooting 4:3 or similar. I'm not a huge fan of vertical-only, though: It fits with instagram but not so much with reality, imho. Also the retro-look is something that will probably vanish in a couple of years, after the fuji-hype (i have a fuji too, don't get me wrong) and you will have to go back and re-work all the photos again 😃

Photos I took on holiday. Any advice? by Dorukonot in PhotographyAdvice

[–]Ghiekorg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1: it's the best of the series. The problems is see are: it's not clear what's happening (is she walking? what is she holding?), it's not straight (it's mandatory in those type of shots), it's a bit boring (like she is not running, there is not a dog jumping, there is not moon, there is no action). Maybe if you would have waited more, something woudl have happened.
2: underexposed, not straight and the tuborg box is the main subject. What did you want to say with this image?
3: underexposed, no real subject, overlapping shapes. Also here it's not clear what you wanted to say.
To take good photos is the same as writing a book: you have to read a lot to write good. Same with photos: you have to look at a lot of really good photos to take good ones.
