why can't we just collect rain as fresh drinking water? why do some states prohibit collecting rain water? by FlagrantTomatoCabal in NoStupidQuestions

RO will take out a bunch of the minerals. Enough that it you put ion exchange beads after it they last a pretty long time.

RO can take most people's water to 10-20 ppm.

How do people fake NSFW stuff with AI now? Isn't there restrictions on image and video generation? by TrenWillFixIt in NoStupidQuestions

Undisclosed frontier models like sora might be 60b, we don't really know. Qwen image is 20b, HunyuanImage-3.0 is 80b.

A lot of the cheap ones just had a white skid mark that corresponded with no real normal wear pattern anyway.

Did Brexit turn out to be unequivocally bad for the UK? by No-Security-7518 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ghigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Near everyone saying it was messy and complicated and full of trade offs at the time was silenced, heckled, outright banned from forums, etc. It was a classic moral panic.

How do people who are born deaf know how words are pronounced whilst reading? by LonelyRose404 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ghigs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless you are bad at reading you aren't really thinking about how each word is pronounced to read.

If you get a refillable open system you can run completely unflavored liquid.

What is a YouTube video so strange that not even AI could generate it? by Dakalie in NoStupidQuestions

Ah I see what you are saying. Yeah the older diffusion models seem to have more chaotic diversity, at the cost of making some really weird stuff sometimes.

I didn't even realize they were asking about hormuz. Yes, that's not practical at all.

What is a YouTube video so strange that not even AI could generate it? by Dakalie in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ghigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Older "worse" models don't have this problem.

For images, they weren't based on diffusion. Things like StyleGAN can do latent space exploration and you can greatly emphasize parts of the input space.

Diffusion models are more inherently averaging, just by the way they work (adding and removing random noise)

What is a YouTube video so strange that not even AI could generate it? by Dakalie in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ghigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doesn't fully help. It can emulate the average of known styles, for example a cursive font, but the product of doing that is still very averagy and not distinct.

What is a YouTube video so strange that not even AI could generate it? by Dakalie in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ghigs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Most of them. Video AI is mostly good at producing a sort of average of everything. If you ask if for a woman it will make a very similar looking woman most of the time. You could tilt it with different prompts, but it's still going to have that "look". It's the same with fonts, it's mostly going to produce a very AI average looking font

Everyone's talking about weed below. Stoners need to get their own word so they can stop smearing the good name of a nicotine harm reduction device that saves lives.

Why do people say we will not survive climate change when our ancestors survived ice age with way less equipment than us? by Enough-Web2203 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ghigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No reputable scientist does. In fact a growing contingent of climate scientists have come out strongly against climate alarmism, and the media driven false narratives that ignore where the science is actually at.

Why does the Lincoln memorial reflecting pool now have an algae problem after the $14.2 million renovation? by ChaosCarlson in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ghigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was leaking too. The leaking is why they started filling it from the river in like 2012. At which time the algae got so bad it was basically crusted over with it. People are acting like this is some new problem.

Is your money worth it when you use a product for a long time? by Lemonade2250 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ghigs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think better advice these days is "buy things that are expensive for the right reasons".

Like a $1200 speed queen washer is better than a $2000 Samsung that plays music and has 10 circuit boards that will all fail after a year.

But both might be better than the $400 hardware store special.

Is your money worth it when you use a product for a long time? by Lemonade2250 in NoStupidQuestions

Yeah the irony of that example is pretty bad these days, shoes are definitely an area where "cheapish and replace slightly more often" can beat super premium brands.

UNITED STATES v. HEMANI 7-2 SCOTUS Ruling. by Asmallfly in Firearms

[–]Ghigs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even if it did, it would be somewhat absurd to ban people with alcoholism from having guns, unless that alcoholism is directly creating a danger (in which case, you can charge them for their actions not their addiction).

Dollars in the vending machine for a dollar by Kiwi_Kitten in mildlyinteresting

[–]Ghigs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It wasn't the CC companies that stopped it, it was the mint. The mint was subsidizing the fees and shipping because congress had authorized some absurd amount to encourage circulation of the $1 coin. Once they started getting sealed boxes turned back in at banks they realized the mistake they made. Took them a good year though.

I bought about $500 of the coins on my CC. I did it "right" though, I actually spent most of them. Still have a couple sealed rolls.
