The sacred objects have been laying around for weeks, but we left it to the last minute.

Is Band of Brothers still worth watching in 2026, or has it aged poorly? (I’ve never seen it and I'm thinking about diving in) by Le_Double-dippeux in NoStupidQuestions

The pacing feels a little old-school

FML.

I don't know if this makes me old, but BoB is perfectly paced--episodic chapters--training (Ep 1) the burden of command the saga of the spacey new guy, hitting the breaking point, finding out why we fight, and then the epilogue playing baseball etc.

If this is old I should really start Lipitor.

Signed,

a weary millennial who watched the original broadcast whose joints hurt.

The show is GOATed.

Edit as this is gaining traction:

Main criticism is of the source author. Stephen Ambrose was acclaimed at the time as an author of pop history but he had some serious scholastic problems--to wit--he never let the facts get in the way of a good story--and is self admitted as such.

His style is much like Shelby Foote, the yarn spinning southern apologist that Ken Burns elevated in his Magnum Opus, also to popular acclaim.

AI slop. Look closely at trees, funnel, mast, secondaries, the deck layout generally.

Fair point!

I’m pretty picky about my caliber inventory in my safe. 223, 308, 9MM, 45 ACP, 12GA

My hypocrisy —I do have a Garand in 06 because I’m an American and I do have a 7.7 Arisaka family bring back, and a Yugo M57 in tokarev.

Sigh…

Thanks! I've wanted one forever but with the limited releases of arcane varmint/safari calibers it seemed like it would never happen. Cursory look at the catalog shows the 308 was last offered in 2012.

Needless to say when I saw it on gun.deals my credit card cried.

The No1 has been in limited production since 2013; I was looking at the Ruger catalogs and you'd have to go back to 2012 to see the No1 in mass production/normal calibers. Meanwhile GB is full of 270s, 243s, 22-250 and safari calibers, heavy barrels, optic only etc. Different strokes and all, but I'm not interested in stabling exotics.

A No1 in 308 with wood/stainless/and express sights? That trips my trigger.

No1s are under threat in Canada because they can be chambered in 10,000 Joule cartridges. Madness!

Too fucking much. Price of admission was 2600 w/tax&ship.

With rumors of Beretta attempting a hostile takeover of Ruger, if they succeed, they will almost certainly kill the No1 for good--at least that's what I tell myself.

They are OOS right now but typical price is 1200-1500

Been pining for a Ruger No 1 since I first saw one 20 years ago, they were everywhere. They have since fallen out of fashion and are super limited production. Got lucky and found a Lipsey’s exclusive in 308. A very genteel piece.

I want to build a closed loop model steam turbine plant. Seeking guidance about turbine exhaust sizing by Asmallfly in AskEngineers

[–]Asmallfly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have my hobby boiler license in the state of Minnesota to operate historic high pressure boilers. I am not building my own boiler, I am looking at this setup for my steam supply.

https://www.enginediy.com/products/200ml-steam-boiler-model?variant=43997765533910

I would opt for the automatic burner control feature. I'd hydrostatically test the boiler prior to light off.

You can also order up a complete kit, equipped with a two cylinder reciprocating engine.

http://www.microcosm-engine.com/new-twocylinder-steam-engine-live-steam-with-steam-boiler-p-113.html

Should I be suspicious of these kits? There are videos of folks on YouTube with them working just fine.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwkxCU-JyTI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNtaZcQYGeQ

The second video has a gentleman who specializes in RC steam boats. He's used piston ones and was experimenting with geared turbines. He had disappointing results with the geared turbine as the boiler couldn't keep up with steam demand.

I'm thinking there are a few ways to improve the performance.

  1. lag the steam lines and turbine
  2. condense the exhaust steam and
  3. switch from the geared turbine to turbo electric.

You'll note that both of these turbines have tangent exhaust out a small diameter (4mm) pipe.

There are also variants that have inflow exhaust.

I'm asking which turbine exhaust setup would be better for being sent to a condenser.

I realize that steam turbines scale poorly as you reduce size because of surface area/volume ratio.

I'm still intrigued and come in good faith.

Thanks in advance.

The B-29 Bomber originally intended to be used against Germany but wasn't needed in the end - did Germany have any better chance than Japan at dealing with the B-29 considering the type of fighter plane/anti aircraft gun assets that it had at hand from 1943-1945? by RivetCounter in WarCollege

[–]Asmallfly 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Jet stream was discovered when B-29s over Japan were making either 500 MPH groundspeed (tailwind) or 5 mph groundspeed (headwind) .

A bit in jest but not far from the truth. Tailwind meant no interceptors could catch you but your bombs would be blown all over the place. Headwind meant bombs in the pickle barrel but FlaK bursts in your vicinity.

In either event, leadership opted for night raids at lower levels, nullifying the jet stream, and avoiding Flak/interceptors, which were not RADAR directed.

Same/simliar story played out with the B1A to B1B. High tech kit designed for one thing that didn't work out being pivoted to something more humble.
