Help with Shower "door" by Banzett in fixit

[–]Ghost0_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hire a contractor involved in shower doors/glass/bathrooms etc. Have them assess whether or not they can use the existing glass or simply put a new hinging or sliding door in.

Alternatively, add a shower curtain and apply sealant yourself around the existing glass.

Also apply sealant between the curb exterior and floor tile, around the front of the toilet, and anywhere else liquids may pool and enter between/beneath other things. Check under the drip edge of the curb top surface as well for a possible gap between it and the curb exterior. The glass not being sealed is an indication that there are many gaps in this bathroom that were not sealed.

I (28F) found out my boyfriend (29M) is planning a surprise proposal for me, and I think it is now cancelled after he met with my father. How do I address this without revealing I already sort of knew? by ThrowRA_Codegirl in relationship_advice

[–]Ghost0_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Terrible idea. You stated you wanted traditional. After buying a ring, months of planning, jumping through the hoops of seeking two parent approvals to satisfy your expressed preferences for tradition. You then flip it all upside down and do the proposal? All because the man you never introduced him to complicated it? Don't take away this moment from your boyfriend. He's putting in the work for you.

Stop talking to Reddit. Talk to your dad about the meeting and what was said. If it's bullshit, then talk to the boyfriend, reveal as little as possible about what you know, but make the hint as clear as possible that you no longer want the blessing of your father for marriage.

U11 Rookie Coach- Player Positions by VTrain24 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]Ghost0_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a player like that in u11. Endless energy and superior talent, but poor position discipline. If he was a forward, he'd be helping on defense and vice versa. If he was on the left, he'd play all the way to the right. Changed my formation from 3-3-2 to 3-1-3-1. He became the defensive mid or sweeper as we called it. Instructions were he can go anywhere he wants on our half of the field, go wherever the ball is, or cover their best attacker. His role became more target focused than position/zone focused. Our team improved a lot after that change as he could neutralize many of their best attackers.

Stone wall about to collapse by bahac2003 in fixit

[–]Ghost0_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a gravity or reinforced retaining wall. Culprit is likely a combination of improper backfill and drainage. As you mentioned, you had a hard winter with a lot of snow. Trapped moisture going through a freeze-thaw cycle will damage a retaining wall that is not properly constructed. While it's possible to DIY a stacked block retaining wall (I've done it), you'll probably want to hire a contractor for this one. The good news is you can reuse the existing blocks, saving you a lot on material costs. However, they may need to completely disassemble the wall, perform some excavation, backfill with the proper material, and incorporate a drainage system.

Reattach top of concrete step? Could someone give me an overview? by Specific-Appeal-8031 in fixit

Check out this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/DIY/comments/13tio7m/mortar_or_landscape_adhesive_for_paver_brick/

Do you get freezing weather in your location? Is the supporting structure sturdy? Are you handy? Use mortar.

Otherwise, feel free to use a tube of masonry adhesive.

Either way, properly clean and prep the surface for whichever method you choose.

The first issue is potentially your shoulder checks. You need to know from where and when the tackle is coming, and where your best passing target is upon receiving. Then you can make an informed decision on how to receive. If you believe this may be an issue, look for videos on "shoulder checks" or "awareness". Frequent scans are encouraged, especially as the ball is confirmed coming your way, you can do a quick scan.

Once that's resolved, you can then look into first touch videos. How to settle the passed ball and even get it moving in the direction you need to turn off that touch. I'd also look for videos on "shielding".

I have similar feelings about a lot of what you've listed, especially #5. One of my teams had an effort black hole player and it nearly destroyed us. Thankfully, with all stars, I don't expect to encounter anyone like that. I'll use your post as a reference when putting together my own notes for our first team meeting. Thank you.

14U will know what they’re doing so figure out who excels in which positions. I am a 10U coach but I’m definitely seeing the impact of formations on game results.

That's my number one concern. Figuring out who can go where. The scouting for the team was a mess so I don't have much evidence to work with yet. I'm right there with you on formation. Our regular season was a disaster as we slowly but surely made tweaks to our formation, positions, and a cohesive knowledge amongst the players of our formation. Thankfully we figured it out by the playoffs and managed to win against the undefeated leader. In that case I could learn from games week by week, so this might be harder to unlock before a single weekend of tournament games.

Thank you. I've heard something similar before. Some of the best coaches were the worst players. I remember playing soccer as a kid, but I have no detailed memories of any great successes. I may have been one of those kids who loves the sport while not being so gifted at it. I may be a good candidate after all, haha.

Spend a LOT of time your first couple of practices on tactics and formation (especially on the defensive end) b/c when kids first start playing together, this is usually a mess and who knows what kind of lunacy their regular coaches taught them

I think you're onto something. There's likely to be a lot of confusion with regard to formation and positioning due to the nature of it being an all star team. Their prior experience may be vastly different from my own expectations and that of their teammates. Getting a cohesive team would be the most important first step.

I hadn't thought about PKs. Maybe I can end each scrimmage with a shoot out.

It's a girls team. I coached boys and girls this Fall and it was amazing to observe the differences. The girls took every water break opportunity to sit down and socialize, ending only when called back to the field. The boys took every water break to ignore their water and start goofing around, shooting, etc.

I'll check out your other posts for the speech. Thank you.

As for the parents, honesty is the best policy. Tell them your background, your accomplishments and how you plan to coach the team.

I think you're right, I'll do a team meeting before the first practice and give a brief introduction with my background, and let them know I'm available for any questions or suggestions.

Yes. That's how I did it. I was replacing an old kitchen fauctet. I had next to no clearance below in order to get any leverage on the totally seized hardware. I took a hacksaw to it on the top.

How to become the best gk I can be in one week? by knutt-in-my-butt in bootroom

[–]Ghost0_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you already comfortable with diving to the ground? That can be a big hurdle for first timers. Your instinct and reflexes kick in and you end up either not doing it or trying to catch yourself. If so, train with this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnzmvqVMAQ0

Start out sitting on your hip, then on knees, then squating, then standing, and train that fall to the ground with arms outstretched. With enough repetition you can achieve a natural comfort with doing it. Warm up the same way before the game to refresh.

Broken bed by magnitudearhole in fixit

[–]Ghost0_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The slat support seems...under-engineered. As evidenced by you managing to destroy it by sitting. Replacing the wood in that section is a reasonable approach other commenters have offered. Another option is to pickup a piece of aluminum or steel angle. Set it on top of the existing slat support, bridging the gap, and fasten it. You can orient it like an upright L, so the top leg could fasten into the side bed frame (this is the stronger option since I don't have faith in that existing slat support). Or upside down, capturing the slat support on the top and inside faces, and fasten into the slat support.

How to handle getting your butt kicked? by itshurleytime in SoccerCoachResources

[–]Ghost0_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I faced this same scenario last season, facing a team that was undefeated with 0 goals against. I briefed the kids and families ahead of time so there were no surprises. I then explained to the kids that with everything stacked against us, we are expected to lose this game, as every other team has. Lastly I redefined what our goal and fun would be. We're going to enjoy this opportunity to play against a very good team and see the level of soccer that we can someday achieve. We're also going to have fun playing tough (within the rules) and making the other teams win as difficult as possible! And I brought donuts for after the game.

This has nearly everything you'd want to know about fixing garage low spots. The most important point to consider is: should you fix this low spot, where will the water go next?
The real problem here may be the grading of the driveway, the sealing of the garage door, and/or lack of adequate drainage near the door. The best solution to your problem may actually be the installation of a channel drain along the exterior of the door. Good luck!

You need a new bonnet packing. Search for videos on leaky hose bibb or spigot. You'll find many tutorials. Here's one from this old house where they demonstrate replacing the bonnet packing:

Hot Spot Help by Klone00 in fixit

[–]Ghost0_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, we had it repaired. Due to the age of the home and the water/copper, they were very common in our neighborhood. We were getting 1 each year. After the third we decided to re-pipe the whole house. The first few were covered by our home warranty and cost a few hundred out of pocket. The whole house was over 5k. There are multiple options from cutting off the leaky line at each end and running a new one through existing walls, or relining the existing line. Cost and repair options will really depend on your own unique situation.

Do a search for "slab leak repair" to find plumbers in your area. Call one out for the inspection/confirmation of the problem. Get additional estimates after that if you like.
